Catshark egg capsules from a Late Eocene deep−water methane−seep deposit in western Washington State, USA. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 58 (1): 77–84. Fossil catshark egg capsules, Scyliorhinotheca goederti gen. et sp. nov., are reported from a Late Eocene deep−water methane−seep calcareous deposit in western Washington State, USA. The capsules are preserved three−dimensionally and some show mineralized remnants of the ribbed capsule wall consisting of small globular crystals that are embedded in a microsparitic matrix. The globules are calcitic, but a strontium content of 2400–3000 ppm suggests that they were origi− nally aragonitic. The carbonate enclosing the egg capsules, and the capsule wall itself, show d13C values as low as −36.5‰, suggesting that formation was induced by the anaerobic oxidation of methane and hence in an anoxic environ− ment. We put forward the following scenario for the mineralization of the capsule wall: (i) the collagenous capsules expe− rienced a sudden change from oxic to anoxic conditions favouring an increase of alkalinity; (ii) this led to the precipitation of aragonitic globules within the collagenous capsule wall; (iii) subsequently the remaining capsule wall was mineralized by calcite or aragonite; (iv) finally the aragonitic parts of the wall recrystallized to calcite. The unusual globular habit of the early carbonate precipitates apparently represents a taphonomic feature, resulting from mineralization mediated by an organic matrix. Taphonomic processes, however, are at best contributed to an increase of alkalinity, which was mostly driven by methane oxidation at the ancient seep site. -

Das Reproduktionsareal von Pseudofurnishius war das pelagische offene Meer der Südtethys, wo diese Gattung in roten Hornsteinknollenkalken und zwischenlagernden roten und grünlichen Tonen besonders häufig ist. Von diesem Gebiet aus besiedelte Pseudofurnishius besonders den Südrand und die südlichen Randmeere der Tethys, wo die Gattung sogar nahe der ökologischen Toleranzgrenze für Conodonten in Plattformkarbonaten und schlecht durchlüfteten flachen Becken relativ häufig auftritt, z.T. in monospezifischen Faunen. Am Nordrand der Südtethys ist Pseudofurnishius im Westen (Balaton-Hochland) ein sehr untergeordnetes Faunenelement und kommt dort nur in Schichten sporadisch vor, die für Conodonten faziell besonders geeignet sind (pelagi- sche, mikritische, oft bunte Kalke). -

Abstract: During Middle Triassic times, the Germanic or northern Peri-Tethys Basin pertained to the western Tethys Ocean. The basin was closed from the north and open toward the Tethys by tectonically controlled depressions (gates). The gates were opened in different times. The marine incursions broke first (as early as in late Scythian time) through the eastern gates and from the Polish Basin advanced gradually to the west. Semiclosed disposition of the basin resulted in its distinctive environmental diversification. Open marine environments developed along the southeastern margins which should be regarded as an integrate part of the Tethys Ocean rather than the epicontinental sea. Northward and westward from the Silesian and Carpathian domains the environments became more restricted. This resulted in significant facies diachronity between the western and eastern parts of the basin. As indicated by the faunal diversity, facies variability and geochemical properties of the sediments, during almost entire Anisian time the open marine sedimentation dominated in the eastern part while the western part displayed restricted circulation, typical for the semi-closed, evaporitic basin. The circulation reversed in Ladinian time when the westward shift of the tethyan spreading center gave rise to opening of the western gate. -

Rennes 1, 35042 Rennes cedex, France b 47 rue de Lavaux, 54520 Laxou, France Received 30 September 2004; received in revised form 21 October 2005; accepted 10 November 2005 Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyse the fluvial evolution of the Lower Triassic in the western part of the Germanic Basin through time and space, as well as the impact of the geodynamic and climatic setting on the preservation of fluvial deposits. The Lower Triassic crops out only in the Vosges Massif and the Black Forest, so well-log studies are required to realise sequence stratigraphy correlations and establish comparisons with others parts of the Germanic Basin. In a first step, we use well-log data analyses to characterise the electrofacies associations in the Triassic and then define the well-log signatures of each formation. In a second step, the characterisation and recognition of genetic sequences and their stacking pattern allow us to define seven minor cycles integrated into two major cycles. Finally, the quantification of the lithologies at different stages of basin evolution leads to the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental maps to illustrate facies evolution through space and time. A comparison with cycles defined in the Germanic Basin allows us to propose correlations of the Lower Triassic on either side of the Rhine Graben and leads to a discussion of the evolution of fluvial systems through time and space. -

K/Ar ages of detrital Keuper micas in the Central European Basin provide new information about the provenance of siliciclastic sediments. All sam- ples of the Erfurt Formation (Lower Keuper) and the Stuttgart Formation (Middle Keuper) indicate Caledonian (445 - 388 Ma) ages. These sedi- ments originate from the Caledonides of southern Norway. The older Fennoscandian Shield and the Russian Platform did not supply any material. In combination with zircon fission track data, we show that uplift of the Caledonides of southern Norway accelerated dramatically during the Car- nian, most likely as a result of rifting of the Viking Graben. This push of Scandinavian-derived sediments ceased in the Upper Keuper (Rhaetian). Instead of Scandinavian sediments, micas of Panafrican age were transported from southeast Poland and Slovakia into the Central European Basin.
