Clunas "A Double Word": Writing and Justice in The Master of Ballantrae The Master oj Ballantrae (1889) is Robert Louis Stevenson's most re markable attempt to ally the genre of adventure fiction with a deft unravel ling and retwining of the" most secret and heartfelt inclinations" 1 of the self. As a precise ordering, seriatim, of heterogeneous documents, voices, and fictional kinds, Master is a notably unstable text. It confounds generic unity, 2 placing some of the definitive elements of Stevenson's earlier, "naive" adventure stories within the main, by and large non-adventurous, narrative of Ephraim Mackellar. It requires readers to read across conven tional boundaries between exotic romantic adventure and domestic drama, between desire and "reality," between I and he. I hope to show this in the following discussion. These instabilities of genre and voice have made the novel somewhat of a puzzle for critics. -

The word simultaneously conjures images of fear, violence and brutality with evocations of adventure on the high seas, swashbuckling heroes and quests for buried treasure. Furthermore, the combination of pirates and islands excites romantic fascination (Cordingly 1995, 162-6), perhaps founded upon the popular and sanitised anti-heroes of literature such as Long John Silver and Captain Hook (Mitchell discusses how literature has romanticised piracy, 1976, 7-10). This paper aims to discover, as far as possible, the part Lundy had to play in piracy in British waters, and to place that in perspective. The nature of the sources for piracy around Lundy will be discussed elsewhere (Harfield, forthcoming); here the story those sources tell is presented. It is not a story of deep-water pirates who traversed the oceans in search of bullion ships, but rather an illustration of the nature of coastal piracy with the bulk of the evidence coming from the Tudor and Stuart periods. LUNDY AS A LANDMARK IN THE EVIDENCE The majority of references to Lundy and pirates mention the island only as a landmark (Harfield, forthcoming). Royal Navy ships are regularly recorded plying the waters between the Scilly Isles, Lundy and the southern coasts of Wales and Ireland (see fig. I) with the intention of clearing these waters of pirates, both British and foreign. For instance, Captain John Donner encountered English pirates ':fifteen miles distant from Lundy Isle" in April 155 7 (7.3.1568, CSP(D)). -

1 “AAARRRHH THERE MATEY!” - The Strange and Wondrous Tale of Bill Constable & the Cinemascope Pirates of Pagewood... by Bob Hill, Oct 2018 In early 1954... and a world away from the dense urban spread of today’s Sydney... the southern suburb of Pagewood was little more than wind blasted sand hills and scrub encroached upon by rows of hastily thrown up brick bungalows, a couple of isolated factories and a desolate bus depot. In the middle of this literal and figurative wasteland, a strange enterprise was taking place in Australia’s only purpose-built film studio complex - the making of “Long John Silver”, a Hollywood style blockbuster replete with imported stars, executives and key technicians in all the Heads of Department roles... that is, all except for their Production Designer, a middle aged Australian about to make his first foray into film! 2 1. Hollywood in the Sand Hills Pagewood studios, 1954 - then named “Television City”, 2 years before TV arrived in Australia! (NSW State Library) “Television City seems to have borrowed its architectural inspiration from Long Bay Gaol...” ‘Pagewood’ is the great lost studio of Australian film-making: As Wikipedia explains... The studio was built in 1935 for National Productions by National Studios Ltd, it was originally known as National Studios. It was constructed for the presumed increase in production that most observers thought would result in Australia following introduction of the NSW Film Quota Act... They were the first new film studios built in Australia since 1912. Gaumont British helped provide finance and personnel in its construction.1 The Quota Act was never enforced and instead of becoming the hub of film production in Sydney, makeshift facilities at Cinesound in Bondi Junction (an old roller skating rink) and Figtree Studios in Lane Cove (a converted picnic ground pavilion) soon eclipsed the better equipped Pagewood studios. -
The Stevenson Circle
The Stevenson Circle Archer, William (1856-1924), journalist and critic. He was dramatic critic for Figaro, and later for the World and the Star. An admirer of Ibsen's work, he was instrumental in introduc- ing Ibsen's plays to the British public. Archer and RLS fre- quently corresponded, and Archer wrote a perceptive obituary, 'In Memoriam R.L.S.' (New Review, January 1895). Balfour, Dr Lewis (1777-1860), grandfather of RLS. RLS took his middle name of Lewis (later Louis) from his grandfather. As a boy RLS delighted in visiting Colin ton Manse, the home of his grandfather from 1823 to 1860. In his essay 'The Manse', included in MP, he gives an affectionate tribute to his recol- lections of the house and of his grandfather. Balfour, Sir Thomas Graham (1858-1929). One of RLS's many cousins, Balfour made his home at Vailima during the last two and a half years of RLS's life. His biography, published in 1901, is an extremely readable, competent and well-researched account. It suffers, however, from having been prepared so soon after Stevenson's death and is insufficiently detached from the protective influence of his widow. It remains an in- dispensable account of RLS and his circle, though inevitably some of Balfour's judgements have been superseded by later scholarship. Barrie, Sir James Matthew (1860-1937), novelist and playright. His first novel The Little Minister (1891), was much admired by RLS. Barrie was also the author of A Window in Thrums, Margaret Ogilvy, and Sentimental Tommy. His plays include The Admirable Crichton, Peter Pan and What Every Woman Knows. -

His father and grandfather were both successful engineers who built many of the lighthouses that dotted the Scottish coast, whilst his mother came from a family of lawyers and church ministers. A sickly boy whose mother was also often unwell, Stevenson spent much of his childhood with the family nurse, Alison Cunningham. She told him many ghost stories and supernatural tales which seem to resonate throughout Stevenson's later fiction, reappearing in several of his short-stories, such as 'The Body Snatchers', 'The Merry Men' [1], and 'Thrawn Janet'. In 1867, Stevenson enrolled at Edinburgh University to study engineering. The choice of subject was influenced by Stevenson's father, who wished his son to continue the prestigious family tradition. Stevenson however had other ambitions, and even at this early stage, expressed a desire to write. He shortly changed courses and began to study law, but soon gave this up to concentrate on writing professionally, much to the displeasure of his father. The newly-married couple set off on honeymoon together, accompanied by Fanny's son, Lloyd Osborne, from her previous marriage. The three started their trip in San Francisco, traveling through the Napa Valley to eventually arrive at an abandoned gold mine on Mount St Helena. Stevenson would later write about this experience in his travel memoir The Silverado Squatters (1883). -

THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE by Robert Louis Stevenson THE AUTHOR Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850-1894) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to staunch Presbyterian parents who were appalled when he turned to agnosticism in his early twenties. Stevenson suffered from respiratory problems throughout his life. During his childhood illnesses, he spent his time reading and particularly enjoyed the novels of Sir Walter Scott, with which his adventure tales are often compared. He was drawn to writing early in life, but his parents encouraged him to undertake a more profitable profession, so he studied engineering and eventually turned to law, even passing the bar exam. He soon turned to writing, however, beginning with magazine essays and two travelogues describing his trips to the Continent to seek relief for his ailments. In Europe he met Fanny Osbourne, a married American woman who soon divorced her husband to marry Stevenson. They lived for a while in San Francisco, then moved back to Scotland and eventually settled in Samoa, where Stevenson found some relief for his tuberculosis, but died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1894 at the age of 44. Stevenson is best known as a writer of adventure stories. His reputation was established with the publication of Treasure Island in 1883, followed by The Black Arrow (1884), Kidnapped (1886), and The Master of Ballantrae (1889). All but the last were published first as serials in the boys’ magazine Young Folks and had much more in common with the historical novels of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) than contemporaries of Stevenson like Charles Dickens and George Eliot. -

Lighthouse design was his father's and his family's profession, so at age seventeen, he enrolled at Edinburgh University to study engineering, with the goal of following in the family business. Lighthouse design never appealed to Stevenson, though, and he began studying law instead. His spirit of adventure truly began to appear at this stage, and during his summer vacations he traveled to France to be around young writers and painters.
