    Card Games for individuals Patience The game is played using a tableau of seven columns. Running from left to right, the first column contains one card, the second contains two, the third three, etc. In each column, the top card should be face up and the rest face down. Deal by placing one card, face up, on the table in front of you then, to this card’s right, six more face down. Repeat this row by row, dealing one less card each time. As well as the face-up cards in the tableau, you’ll work with every third card in the remaining pack, one at a time. Sequences of grouped cards can be moved around according to the same rules as individual cards. Whenever you free up a face-down card on a tableau column, turn it over. If a column is emptied, you can shift any card or sequence into it. If an ace comes into play, position it face up above the tableau, thus beginning a foundation. Foundations are suited and built from ace to king.

    3 Unveiling: the ‘revolutionary journées’ of 13 May 1958 Throughout the period from early 1956 to early 1958 putschist forces had been gathering strength both within the army and among right- wing settler organisations and these eventually coalesced on 13 May 1958 when crowds gathered in the Forum and stormed the General Government buildings. The military rapidly used the crisis to effect a bloodless coup and to install a temporary ‘revolutionary’ authority headed by a Committee of Public Safety (Comité de salut public or CSP) under Generals Massu and Salan. There then followed a tense stand- off between the army in Algeria and the new Paris government headed by Pierre Pfl imlin, a three-week period during which civil war was a real possibility, until de Gaulle agreed to assume, once again, the role of ‘saviour of the nation’, and was voted into power by the National Assembly on 1 June.1 ‘13 May’ was one of the great turning points in modern French history, not only because it marked a key stage in the Algerian War, but more signifi cantly the collapse of the Fourth Republic, de Gaulle’s return to power, and the beginnings of the new constitutional regime of the Fifth Republic. The planning of the coup and its implementation was extraordi- narily complex – the Bromberger brothers in Les 13 Complots du 13 mai counted thirteen strands2 – but basically two antagonistic politi- cal formations reached agreement to rally to the call for de Gaulle’s return to power. On the one hand there was a secret plot by Gaullists, most notably Michel Debré (soon to become Prime Minister), Jacques Soustelle, Léon Delbecque and Jacques Chaban-Delmas (acting Minister of Defence), to engineer the return of the General so as to resolve the political crisis of the ‘system’, the dead hand of the party system of the Fourth Republic, which they viewed as destroying the grandeur of France.

    101 PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS FOR FINE TURF Bert McCarty Plant growth retardants (PGR's) or inhibitors are increasingly being used to suppress seedheads and leaf growth due to rising mowing costs and danger posed to operators and other personnel. Traditionally, plant growth retardants have been used in the South to suppress bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge.) or tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) seedhead production exclusively in low maintenance areas such as highway roadsides, airports, and golf course roughs. However, in recent years, new chemicals which may be used in higher maintained commercial turf situations have been developed. Several undesirable characteristics which have been associated with growth retardants include: phytotoxicity (burn) of treated leaves from 4 to 6 weeks following applications; reduced recuperative potential from physical damage to treated turf; and increased weed pressure due to reduced competition from treated turf. Normally, growth retardants are used in low maintenance areas; therefore, these undesirable characteristics do not pose a problem to most managers. However, several growth regulatory materials have recently been developed for use on hybrid bermudagrass fairways and St. Augustinegrass. Vertical topgrowth (clippings) is suppressed, but horizontal spread (runners) is not. Therefore, turf recovery from golf club divots and other injuries occurs while topgrowth remains suppressed. Other uses involve areas where mowing has been discontinued due to heavy rains, equipment failure, etc., but topgrowth remains suppressed if the grass is treated. Note: These retardants used on hybrid bermudagrass and St. Augustinegrass do not satisfactorily suppress seedhead development. PGRs are separated into two groups, Type I and Type II, based on their method of growth inhibition or suppression.
