2 Andalusia Andalusian culture is a powerful tool of social and territorial cohesion. And flamenco is the main driving force which identifies Andalusians both within and across borders. A musical and artistic genre which, since 2010, makes part of the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage established by UNESCO. The safeguard and protection of flamenco are a mandate of the Statute of Autonomy and the Department of Culture of the Andalusian Government is responsible for its implementation. The continuation of Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía (Andalusian Flamenco Ballet) is one of the measures of support and diffusion of the Andalusian cultural genre par excellence.

The threads of Andalusian culture mingle with the dance steps of a project aimed to become a commonplace for top-notch creators and artists, encouraging the participation and professional development of Andalusian artists.

The Andalusian Government has since 1994 its own dance company: then called Andalusian Dance Company (Compañía Andaluza de Danza) which, under the guidance of greatest choreographers, has brought flamenco to numerous stages in and abroad.

In 2004 it was renamed Andalusian Flamenco Ballet (Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía). Today it is a symbol of Andalusian culture, flamenco art and the common values and emotions of a people; a dance company which will go on weaving the threads of Andalusian most representative art wherever flamenco steps arrive.

3 HISTORY

Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía (Andalusian Flamenco Ballet) is the highest institutional representative of flamenco and Réquiem by Mario Maya (1994) has played, since its creation in 1994 -over 20 years ago-, the role of ambassador of flamenco. Throughout this period the Company has become the best means for opening new markets for flamenco, has been on stages all over the world and has been part of the cultural agendas of countries such as the United States, Argentina, Cuba, France, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland or Mexico; of major international events like Aichi Exhibition in Japan and has participated in big flamenco festivals such as New York or London.

The productions carried out during this time have reached remote locations but were also staged in Andalusia. The Andalusian Flamenco Ballet participated in seven editions of the programme Lorca y en los Jardines del Generalife (the prestigious festival held in the Alhambra gardens in Granada) with several productions based on works by Federico García Lorca which have afterwards toured the main scenic venues in Spain and abroad.

The history of the Ballet is full of recognition, not only from the public and the critics but also from performing arts specialists. In this regard it has been awarded the National Choreography Prize for the show directed by María Pagés El Perro Andaluz and several choreographies by Cristina Hoyos while she directed the Ballet have been nominated for the Max theatre prizes. Notable among these is Yerma, which received the Max Prize for Best Female Dance Performance to Cristina Hoyos; or Romancero Gitano which was the most seen show in Spain in 2006. Images, 20 years of Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía received the Giraldillo Prize for the Best Show of the 18th Flamenco Bienal of . Likewise, Tierra-Lorca. Cancionero popular has been awarded, proposed by the Jury, the Giraldillo Prize to the corps de ballet of the Ballet in the 19th Flamenco Bienal of Sevilla.

The dance company has been a constant source of talents whence major current flamenco artists emerged: Israel Galván, Isabel Bayón, Rafael Campallo, Belén Maya, Fernando Romero, Poema del Cante Jondo Mercedes Ruiz, María José Franco, Juan José Jaén en el Café de Chinitas “El Junco”, Patricia Guerrero or Rafaela Carrasco by Cristina Hoyos (2011) among others.

All this has led Andalusian Flamenco Ballet to become an exemplary dance company the productions of which have created its own public within and across Spanish borders and which awakes the interest for flamenco around the world.

A fantasy made up of avant-garde, surreal, flamenco and popular passages which fits that “imbalance from which contrast arises as a beautiful theatrical effect” and subject to the anachronism which results in the “condensation of a time”, both concepts followed by Lorca.

Those pictures blend thousands of Federicos: from the surreal and experimental Federico to the Moorish, black, Jewish, Gypsy and Christian Federico. Two sides of the same coin which has the artistic collaboration of Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola as mint. We will be taken on a journey into the heart of flamenco, dancing songs of seguiriyas, granaínas, fandangos, peasant songs, bulerías, tangos, romances, alegrías and soleares among other flamenco styles or “palos” which will be sung with lyrics by Lorca. And from those races Federico was kindly fond of and which would lay the foundations of the rhythm, harmony and melody of what centuries after would be flamenco, we will be taken on a journey into the heart of flamenco, dancing songs of seguiriyas, granaínas, fandangos, peasant songs, bulerías, tangos, romances, alegrías and soleares among other flamenco styles or “palos” which will be sung with lyrics by Lorca.

10 Federico García Lorca is a source we would like to pay tribute to with absolute respect and purest admiration.

The bailaores will dance the songs which inspired Lorca or the ones we find in his works, the songs of the flamenco artists he met and who surroundedhim such as Manuel Torre, Pastora Pavón “Niña de los Peines”, El Gloria, Ignacio Espeleta or don Antonio Chacón. And from this real flamenco to the flamenco imagined, told and theorized from the conferences of charming Federico, the “primitive Andalusian” and the “jondo architect” Federico.

We will dance one of the endless folkloric sessions Federico organized at the Residencia de Estudiantes and also one of the many meetings he held in his bedroom with his friends Salvador, Luis, Pepín or Rafael.

Some of the melodies Lorca included in his plays will be danced.

Federico at the piano, harmonizing and preparing the popular songs he would record with his close friend Argentinita and of which the following –among others- will be danced:Anda Jaleo, Los cuatro muleros, El Zorongo gitano or Sevillanas from the 18th century.

Because although Federico was not a singer himself, he generated songs; although Federico was not a choreographer he generated choreographies, dances and ballets. Because his concern for popular music and flamenco art has made some jewels come to us that otherwise would had been lost forever.

Because over 80 years after his dead, his poems, his works, his songs and his conferences inspirethe creation ofthe artists of the 21st century …
