Pendekar Sanders had a very successful seminar in Ireland with Guru Liam McDonald on May 15-16, a very large and successful seminar at Guru Besar Jeff Davidson’s school on June 5-6 and he just returned from a seminar in England. The seminar at Guru Besar Jeff Davidson’s was video taped and the 2 volume set can be purchased through Raja Naga. Tape 1 consists of blakok (crane) training and Tape 2 has about 15 minutes more of blakok training followed by a very intense training session in various animal possessions including the very rare Raja Naga possession. Guru Besar Davidson and his students should be commended on their excellent portrayal of the art. Tape 1 is available to the general public, but due to the intense nature of tape 2 you must be a student. It is with great sadness that I must report that Guru William F. Birge passed away. This article starts with Chris Barker’s statement about city and urban as text in his phenomenal book, Cultural Studies, Theory and Practice. The city as a complex subject has been transformed into the representation of urban culture. In the post-modernism view, urban culture as cultural space and cultural studies’ sites have significantly pointed to became communications discourse and also part of the identity of Semiology. This article uses semiotics of Saussure for the research methods. Surabaya and Jakarta have been chosen for the objects of this article. The result of this article is describing the significant view of architecture science helps the semiotics in cultural studies. In another way, city’s architecture becomes the strong identity of urban culture in Jakarta and Surabaya. Architecture approaches the cultural studies to view urban culture, especially in symbol and identity in the post-modernism era. Yet, many cities in the region struggle to reap the benefits of urban development. They have inadequate infrastructure and weak political will, resulting in marginalised groups being denied basic amenities such as secure housing. In Jakarta, the high-profile evictions of kampung lands under then governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama (2014–2017) galvanised residents and civil society groups to oppose attempts by the municipality and private sector to displace disadvantaged populations, thereby disrupting existing state-society dynamics. This exploratory paper seeks to understand the extent to which changing state-society relations help the marginalised claim their right to the city. I posit that everyday level state-society interactions between citizens, NGOs, and state actors, informed by differential notions of the housing issue, are crucial to increasing the welfare of these urban residents and their access to the city. However, there are some limitations and implications, as societal and state actors cope with the challenges of rapid urbanisation.
