Nordic Journal of Comparative and International Education (NJCIE) NJCIE 2021, Vol. 5(2), 65–78 http://doi.org/10.7577/njcie.4156 On Ki Hadjar Dewantara's philosophy of education Dorothy Ferary1 University College London, Institute of Education Abstract This comparative education article explores the purpose of education in the Indonesian context. My aim is to see if there are any differences between the purpose of education during the colonial era and present-day Indonesia. In order to do that, I draw mostly on the philosophy of Ki Hadjar Dewantara, who is regarded as the father of Indonesian education. This article is particularly relevant because the Indonesian government has recently started to critically re-examine two of the educational concepts proposed by Dewantara, which are "pendidikan karakter" (character education) and "merdeka belajar" (independent learning). In conceptualising education, Dewantara, who was influenced by Tagore, Montessori, and Fröbel, saw the importance of imparting local wisdom and values ignored by the colonial schools. Therefore, in this article, I will compare his educational views with the Dutch view of schooling during the colonial era. I will then look at Indonesia's current approach to education to find the similarities and differences of purpose relative to Dewantara's views of education. In this article, I argue that Dewantara's philosophy is still very much relevant today. I conclude that the Indonesian government should refer back to its history when defining education for its next generation. It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape. -

Smuggling Cultures in the Indonesia-Singapore Borderlands Michele Ford and Lenore Lyons The smuggling will never stop. As long as seawater is still seawater and as long as the sea still has water in it, smuggling will continue in the Riau Islands. Tengku Umar, owner of an import-export business Borders are lucrative zones of exchange and trade, much of it clandestine. Smuggling, by definition, 'depends on the presence of a border, and on what the state declares can be legally imported or exported' (Donnan & Wilson 1999: 101), and while free trade zones and growth triangles welcome the free movement of goods and services, border regions can also become heightened areas of state control that provide an environment in which smuggling thrives. Donnan and Wilson (1999: 88) argue that acts of smuggling are a form of subversion or resistance to the existence of the border, and therefore the state. However, there is not always a conflict of interest and struggle between state authorities and smugglers (Megoran, Raballand, & Bouyjou 2005). Synergies between the formal and informal economies ensure that illegal cross-border trade does not operate independently of systems of formal regulatory authority. -
The Market Impacts of Sharing Economy Entrants: Evidence from USA and China

This study adds to the ongoing debate over whether and how ride-hailing platforms infuence new car sales in USA and China. Our results sug- gest that the short-term impact of Didi Chuxing’s entry on new car sales is positive. Unlike the efect of Didi Chuxing on new car sales in China, Uber’s entry nega- tively infuences new car sales in USA. The entry of Didi Chuxing is related to a 9.24% increase in new car sales in China and the entry of Uber is related to an 8.1% decrease in new car sales in USA. We further empirically confrm that the impact of ride-hailing companies is trivial in small cities.
