ARTIST VIEWS

Life inspires my art. Art has given me my life. Meanings in my work is open, I apply natural and simple media's to my work like for example wood implies for the reason that it has annual rings. Stone since it has existed a long time ago symbolizes antiquity; copper a product of modern science stands for technology and the future of human society.

In my country whenever people encounter difficulty they seek out many ways to overcome it. It is this same powerful imagination that is driving the country and its people to look forward to a better future. This is the kind of emotion I bring to my canvas or mural.

Change is constant phenomena so it is difficult to term my work - Expressionistic, Abstract, Non-representational etc. I believe when the artist is alive in any person, whatever kind of profession may be, he becomes an inventive searching, daring, self expressive creature. It is an axiom that in no other occupation than that of an artist does the true nature of the person so readily reveals itself. The work sometimes is so intense that not even the artist can adequately relate in words what the work may mean. Every artwork speaks for itself and every artist normally finds gain in the work itself, not outside it.

I want to touch people with my art. I want them to say ‘She feels deeply, She feels tenderly.' BIOGRAPHY

Nagi says if my art work can bring a smile on a child’s face I would be happiest. Its my love for children that made me create mother and child again in different shape and form.

“Art is more about passion than anything else”- Rouble Nagi MOTHER AND CHILD (MUMBAI 2015

Title: The Tree of Life Location: Year: 2015 Feb Weight: 4 Tonne Medium: Marble TREE OF LIFE

Model of “Tree of Life” At the Studio After Installation TREE OF LIFE

Concept Note : The tree of life, is a marble installation weighing 5 tons and standing 7 feet tall. It was designed with symbols that reminds us of the love and grace God gives to each of us. It has been said trees are the earth's effort to speak to heaven. As a tree's branches give shade and protection from the sun, God always gives us love and protection. Knowing that we are loved and not alone can give us the strength to do things we did not know we were capable of doing. The installation symbolises wisdom, growth, protection, strength and God’s grace. The tree of life sculpture has been copyrighted by the artist. This installation has taken over 4 months to create. “With care and nurturing, a tree will continue the growth of new life for many generations” a concept the artist followed while creating and designing this installation. As Rouble always designs artwork that are site/space specific, this particular installation was made for a client’s outdoor garden. The marble has been intricately carved from a single piece to create a tree with symbols and designs that show a vertical growth. Rouble has created more than 4 different designs with the same title, all having different themes and meaning. The “Tree of life” is a series of installations the artist has designed in various mediums like marble, mosaic, metal and ceramic just to name a few. LOVERS LOVERS

- After Installation LOVERS

The installation titled “Lovers”, has been installed in New Delhi. The work has been carved out of a single piece of marble, which took the artist 2 months to source. The sculpture has taken more than 8 months and weighs approximately 5 tons. The design is a part of the artist’s personality. “I always make my initial designs from clay, create a form and hold it against the sky, this way I can imagine it in any size and always be in control.”

While creating any large sculpture I always feel that my audience must think ,“creating something like this is nearly impossible.” Sculptures look the best in open air especially in landscape. My subject is my emotion, and I believe that paintings are more poetic and sculptures more realistic and logical, to evoke emotions in an audience through sculptures is the most difficult thing to do. All my recent projects have been large and required me working with new medium. My studio is more like a laboratory than manufacturing. All my sculptures in recent times weigh over a ton minimum. Madonna and Child Madonna and Child

Different views of the sculpture with different lighting, close-ups for reference and the fine finish which is visible. Lighting affects art deeply so does the location. MADONNA AND CHILD

“Mothers love is peace for her child, and her children are her anchor for life”

All my sculptures are an extended part of me, sculptures as I have always said is the art of intelligence. As an artist I believe to create your own life one has to carve it like a sculpture. For me a sculpture occupies real space as we do, you can walk around it, feel and touch it I often relate to it as another person.

My sculptures are very personal, for years my subjects have been my emotions and thought. I express all my emotions through my sculpture since am I not a poet, as much as I would want to be. To start I take a relief, draw it and carve it out after which I build it up from a flat surface. Mostly its addition and subtraction till the end.

The sculpture “Madonna and child” is carved out of a single piece of marble and weighs 7 Tons. The rock often guides me to the final sculpture, the process is long and the work and ideas keep changing along the way. Every sculpture must have significance and does not belong in everyday life like a table and chair.

The space must demand it and the sculpture should be a part of the surrounding rather than dominate it. My sculpture for instance was first thought of by me a few years back but I never started doing it till I found a suitable space for it. The subject of “Madonna and child” is a representation of Mother and child it is a subject which has been popular throughout the ages some of the artists who have painted and sculpted this subject are Raphael, Michelangelo, Giotto, Filippo Lippi just to name a few. So, in other words how to respond to a sculpture and how a viewer sees a sculpture is vital. As an artist I try to bring forth the playful emotion between the mother and child with my sculpture however to express emotion through a material or object that really is emotionless was a real challenge. This sculpture has taken me over 3 months to finish. FLIGHT OF FREEDOM FLIGHT OF FREEDOM

The vision during the design phase were doves or pigeons flying upwards in a flock. The white doves/pigeons are synonymous with freedom, joy and peace. Freedom in all aspects — spiritual and otherwise. This sculpture is a visual treat for the residents of the building and the colour white is very soothing to the eye.

This is basically a non-representational sculpture, designed specifically keeping freedom and an upward motion in mind, like white pigeons flying vertically up in a flock. The design is inspired by what we see in nature and is the starting point of a somewhat creative play, which bears some resemblance to my thought of freedom. INSTALLATIONS

METAL CITIBANK MURAL CITIBANK MURAL

This installation is made in the Citibank headquarters in Bandra Kurla Complex , Mumbai. The architect along with the CEO wanted to have an artwork in the lobby of the Building. The concept I developed was that we design a mural depicting the history of the bank since it is more than 200 years old. We designed a mural showing the first Citibank building in New York which was founded in June 16, 1812 to building till date.

The mural did not need any explanation of what it was trying to depict, the design was meant to be self-explanatory. The murals were installed on the wall at a height of 16’ (feet) from ground and weighed approximately 600 kgs each. It still remains one of my favourite works till date. Mould and Model Phase Design Philosophy: “Most of my designs are conceptualized in my head before I start work, I like Sketching randomly and freely to develop a form. During my sketching phase is where I take a decision of dimensions in the sculpture or mural.” -ROUBLE NAGI METAL SCULPTURE Mother and Child concept:

Every sculptor and mural artist works with a concentration of his whole personality, and the conscious part of it resolves conflicts, organized memories, and prevents him from trying to walk in two directions at the same time. As an artist and as a mother this concept of ‘Mother and Child’ comes very naturally At the studio to me. As a sculptor I am only interested in the shape of things.

As an artist one always wants to do something that’s close to one’s heart. When Arpita came to me with an idea of creating this fantastic visual spectacle, it was something I always wanted to do. As an artist I have seen the Last Supper created by various artists like Pietro Perugino, Paul Ruben, Dagnan-Bouveret and my favorites Dali and Da Vinci.

Just like the latter as Dali created the ‘Last Supper 'combining the typical Christian themes with modern approaches of Surrealism including geometric elements of symmetry and polygonal proportion, every artist I guess wants to create this masterpiece.

I wanted to do it in a mosaic mix media format with architectural elements and a three dimensional visual effect, Arches were created to add dimension which were hand painted in gold on frames. Cutting tiles in such small sizes is not easy but that’s what makes tile mosaic so interesting n challenging to work on, blending n mixing different colour tiles together is fun in itself. Glass mosaic tiles had to be specially made as colors were not available it took time to put the panel together but am really happy with the outcome. Have done frescos and artwork making the apartment a visual treat. THE LAST SUPPER MURAL IN TILE MOSAIC

The Nanded project is close to my heart, as I am born to Sikh parents. Nanded is a holy place for the Sikhs as its is one of the five Takht’s. I was offered this project by Dr. Pasricha who had seen my works earlier, and is the administrator of Sri Hazur . It was an emotional experience for me to recreate events from the sikh history through my murals. After countless hours of discussions with the people involved we were ready to create a masterpiece. This project almost took me a year to complete, as there are maps, events and even the golden temple that has been recreated in a mural. I am sure people visiting the galleries and exhibits will experience the same feelings as I as an artist felt while creating it. The mediums I used were cold ceramic, fibre, wood and frescos. The architect was helpful with his insights. NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Art, like knowledge, is appendant to values which are independent of the interests, even the noblest interests, of human life, for they are values of the intellectual order. For a true sense of the common good understands that Art and Poetry, though or rather because they deal with an object independent in itself of the rules and standards of human life and the human community, play an essential and indispensable part in the existence of mankind. As an artist I feel I must give back something to people, not because we present pictures to the public or we are making things in three dimension or two; or because one man is using words and another gestures. Such differences exist, of course; it would be foolish to ignore them. But the problems that confront the various artist in living in society are not technical or even “aesthetic” in one traditional meaning of that vague word and cannot be detected if the eye of the observer is trained exclusively upon such elements of works of art as beauty, colour, rhytm, balance, form ,line and so on. They arise because the artist whatever medium, whatever rules, whatever form, whatever tradition he may happen to choose, is still a man among men.

Theorists in aesthetics are usually concerned with the role of art in reference to the human community. But they should also be concerned with the role of the human community in reference to art. Since the community needs art and the artists, the community has certain duties toward them. Just as the artist must be responsible, so must the community. As an artist I try in my own little way to help children and old people exposing them to color and organizing art camps for them along with NGO's such as Pratham. Its something I enjoy doing. A work of art conveys that spiritual treasure which is the artist's own singular truth, for the sake of which he risks everything and to which he must be heroically faithful. I have taught and learned a lot from these children over the last few years. ROUBLE NAGI ART FOUNDATION
