Work on the forthcoming book, Big Love: The Life and Teachings of Lama Yeshe, has spanned three decades. To understand the significance of this project as it draws to a close, Mandala talked to three key people, all early students of Lama Yeshe, about the production of the book: Adele Hulse, Big Love’s author; Peter Kedge, who initiated and helped fund the project; and Nicholas Ribush, who is overseeing the book’s publication at the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive. Big Love: The Life and Teachings of Lama Yeshe begins with a refugee Tibetan monks. Bernard Kouchner Vytautas Landsbergis Despite great uncertainty surrounding the new administration’s foreign policy, so far, we have Mairead Maguire been encouraged by the positive reception we have encountered in dozens of meetings ICT’s Adolfo Perez Esquivel team has organized in both the House and Senate. We have also reached out to the presidential Jose Ramos-Horta transition team to brief team members and ensure that key positions in the White House and Rabi Ray State Department have the correct information with regard to the current situation inside Tibet. Professor Samdhong Rinpoche Sulak Sivaraksa During the weeks before the confirmation hearing for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, we worked hard to make sure that Senators would pose questions about U.S. policy on Tibet and receive his Tenzin N. Nyare Khentrul (Gelek) Rinpooche has passed away To our great sorrow we have learnt that the eminent Tibetan Master Nyare Khentrul Rinpoche, better known as Gelek Rinpoche, passed away yesterday at 6 am local time in the USA. Rinpoche was one of the most important early trail blazers to establish Tibetan Buddhism in the West. He was brilliant at holding the balance between maintaining the undiluted traditional knowledge and the transfer to the west with all its own idiosyncratic conditions. He still came from the generation of scholars born in old Tibet. 1939 he was born as a nephew of the 13th Dalai Lama. As a recognized incarnation he first experienced life in a monastery. He completed his studies in Drepung monastic university at a very young age with a geshe title. In 1959 he escaped to India, along with many of his fellow Tibetans and returned his monks vows then. He was one of the first students of the Young Lamas Home School. He came to the West early, to the USA, where amongst others he kept close contact with famous poet Allen Ginsberg and musician Philip Glass. He founded the Buddhist organization Jewel Heart, which amongst others, has a sister organization in Holland. Gelek Rinpoche is a close friend of our spiritual guide Dagyab Rinpoche. They knew each other since childhood. Due to this deep bond between them many students of one lama are also students of the other. Gelek Rimpoche has also given teachings in Tibethaus and Chödzong, (the predecessor to Tibethaus). He will remain unforgettable. This teachings were carried equally by profound wisdom and great humor and were always relevant to daily life.

  • The Three Principles of the Path
THE THREE PRINCIPLES OF THE PATH Kyabje Gelek Rimpoche Tuesday night teachings 1987 – 1988 Jewel Heart Transcript ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This is the transcription of a series of Tuesdaynight talks, given in the United States in 1987-1988 by Gelek Rinpoche, the spiritual leader of Jewel-Heart. The course is based on a text of Je Tsongkhapa, The Three Principle Aspects of the Path to Highest Enlightenment. We used the text-translation of Robert Thurman, to be found in his book Life and teachings of Tsongkhapa, pg. 57-58, the text used at that time. The transcript is lightly edited. In transcribing I took the liberty of adding a few words where thought necessary and Gelek Rimpoche moderately adjusting the sentences; only just enough for the text to be well understood without Rinpoche's intona- tion and way of talking. Questions and answers on the talks are only transcribed as far as understood and thought relevant and for the sake of easy study put in the Appen- dices. The drawing on the cover we received from Alfred Woll. These teachings have proved to be very, very useful for the first step - the introductory year- of the Jewel Heart Training Programm. After this one moves into the Odyssey to Freedom and from there into the big Lam Rim Teachings. For the sake of the students as well as the facilitators, headings and divisions in the text, suggestions for home- practice, suggestions for reading, notes, glossary and index were added. This third edition has been revised on three points; 1. The English is revised by Anne Warren, USA.

Jewel Heart Transcripts are lightly to moderately edited transcriptions of the teachings of Kyabje Gelek Rimpoche and others teachers who have taught at Jewel Heart. Their purpose is to provide Rimpoche’s students, as well as all others who are interested, with these extremely valuable teachings in a way that gives one the feeling of being pre- sent at the teachings. JEWEL HEART Boeddhistische Studie en Meditatie Nijmegen Tel. 024 322 6985 www.jewelheart.nl Acknowledgements This is the transcript of the teachings Gelek Rimpoche gave dur- ing the Spring Retreat of 1996 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, en- titled ‘Misfortune as an Ally.’ The subject is about training of the mind, Lo jong in Tibetan, methods to develop the altruistic mind. These methods are no si- necure as the ego cherishing part of our minds is confronted straight out. From this it may be clear that these teachings are aimed at the Mahayana practitioner. Even though these teachings stem from the eleventh century, they still totally apply to our pre- sent-day situation and can be applied very well in our present-day lives. The first text from which is taught is Langri Tangpa's Training of the Mind in Eight Stanzas. These beautiful verses reveal profound yet very practical methods to the development of a real altruistic mind.

  • Geshe Sopa by Roger Jackson Dear Colleagues
Bios Geshe Sopa by Roger Jackson Dear Colleagues, It is with great sadness that I write to report the passing of Geshe Lhundub Sopa, on August 28, 2014, at the age of 91 (92 by Tibetan reckoning). Geshe-la—as he was well-nigh universally known—was one the last surviving masters to receive most of their scholarly training in Tibet, and one of the first such scholars to teach in a Western university. He was Professor Emeritus of South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, author of numerous scholarly works on Tibetan Buddhism, founding and emeritus abbot of Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, and a revered Buddhist teacher, with students in every part of the world. Born in 1923 to a farming family in the Shang principality of the west-central Tibetan region of Tsang, he entered a local Gelukpa monastery, Ganden Chökhor, at the age of eight. When he was eighteen, he moved to Lhasa to join Je College of the great monastic university of Sera. Studying with some of Tibet's greatest masters, he rose rapidly through the scholarly ranks, and was appointed tutor to an important young tulku, Khamlung Rinpoche. In 1959, shortly before the Lhasa uprising, when H.H. the Fourteenth Dalai Lama stood for his Geshe examination, Geshe-la was chosen to serve as a debate partner, quizzing His Holiness on the Perfection of Wisdom literature. With the Chinese suppression of the uprising, Geshe-la, like the Dalai Lama and tens of thousands of other Tibetans, made the perilous journey to India and exile.
