Part II are the vajrayana teachings on the practice of White Tara, taught by Rinpoche during the spring of 1995 in Nijmegen, a vajrayana weekend in Ann Arbor 1995, and the winterretreats 1996/97 en 1997/98 in the US. Part II is restricted; what is taught can only be practiced by those who’ve received full initiation in either Avalokiteshvara or in any maha annuttara yoga tantra. (A Tara long-life initiation – which actually is a blessing – is not what is meant here). Because of this restriction, part I has been published separately. The transcript is updated since the 4th edition. In particular it got a number of features that facilitate studying this worthwhile practice. A glossary, a list of literature and an index are provided. Images related to the teachings have been added. References to other literature have been made. Cross-references between the sutrayana- and the vajrayana part may help clarify difficulties. For easy study additional small headings have been made. The teachings of Part I were transcribed by several Jewel Heart friends in the Netherlands. The vajrayana teachings have been transcribed by Hartmut Sagolla. The drawing of Buddha Shakyamuni and those of the mudras were made by Marian van der Horst, those of the life-chakras by Piet Soeters. -

The difference between NKT and Gelug Dharma Teachers The NKT provides Dharma teachers to schools, colleges, universities, health and prison services and the general public. It is important therefore to consider the appropriateness of the training and qualifications of their teachers. Here we consider two approaches. The NKT’s system and the Gelug system. The Gelug is where Kelsang Gyatso, Spiritual Director and guru of the NKT, studied Buddhism. It must be noted that he did not complete his studies by taking all of the geshe examinations or attending tantric college. Later he was to be expelled from his own monastery by a unanimous decision. Kensur Yeshey Tupden (in Path to the Middle) says that to the degree we understand that the referent object of our conception of true existence does not exist, there will result a commensurate diminishment of our suffering. And not only will we understand but we can then impart this wisdom to others. We should be observing this precious opportunity to study Madhyamika with this motivation. Geshe Etiquette It’s a tremendous honor for the Rime Buddhist Center to host Geshe Tsewang Thinley from the Drepung Gomang Monastery. To make you feel more comfortable and to show Geshe la the respect he deserves, a little protocol & guidelines are in order. ● RESPECT: Respect is rooted in the central insight of the awakening Buddha. When interacting with any monk, it is appropriate to treat him with great respect. He has gone through many years of training and should be accorded treatment as if they were an emanation of the Buddha. ● GESHE IS A TITLE: Geshe Tsewang Thinley has earned a Geshe Lharampa degree from the Drepung Gomang Monastic University. This is a strenuous 23-year program of study and is the equivalent of a Ph.D. in Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy. He should be addressed as Geshe la or Geshe Tsewang Thinley la. The “la” is an honorific term added at the end of a person’s name or title to show respect. ● It is never appropriate to address Geshe la as Rinpoche or Lama. Although these titles have evolved into different meanings in the West, In Tibetan culture, a Lama is a very highly realized tulku (reincarnation) and a rinpoche refers to an incarnate lama or honorific for abbots of monasteries. ● When referring to Geshe la, please show respect by using his title: “Drepung Gomang Geshe in Residence” or simply “Geshe in Residence”. It is extremely disrespectful to refer to him as “The Monk”or “The Rime Center Monk”. ● Geshe la is a fully ordained Tibetan monk. He has taken many vows including that of celibacy. -

A Short Biography of Ven. Geshe Dhamcho Gyaltsen1 Born in 1934 in a small village in the eastern province of Kham, Tibet, Ven. Dhamcho Gyaltsen entered Thupten Nyishar Ling Monastery at the young age of five. Cared for by his teachers, he quickly learned reading and writing and soon were memorizing prayers and compositions by great masters. He mastered the Buddhist ritual protocols by the age of eighteen. Realizing the need to understand the profound implications and meanings of the rituals he left his homeland for Central Tibet to study the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni. After several months of journey across Tibet's rugged landscape he finally reached Lhasa, the Land of gods, in 1952 and joined Drepung Loseling monastery. Under the tutelage of great masters such as Gen. Lhakyab, Lochoe Rinpoche, Gen Pema Gyaltsen and Gen. Nyima Gyaltsen he began his formal study of Buddhist philosophy starting with Buddhist logic, epistemology and philosophical tenets. He devoted years of hard work and mastered the subtle views of the Middle Way School, the vast metaphysical interpretations of abhidharma and the intricate yet complete stages of Buddhist paths. The Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950 and the subsequent subjugation and suppression of the Tibetans completely disrupted the lives of all the Tibetans and eventually forced hundreds of thousands of Tibetans into exile in 1959. Along with hundreds of monks from his and other monasteries, Ven. Dhamcho followed His Holiness the Dalai Lama into exile. Under the auspices of the Indian government temporary institutions were set up at Buxar, in northern India, for the thousands of monks who were pouring into India and who had nothing but the robes on their bodies and rosaries on their wrists. -

Each month, pujas are performed by many thousands of monks and nuns. The enormous number of Sangha engaged in these practices is an extremely powerful means to overcome obstacles and create merit for the entire organization. Speech Delivered by His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama to the Second Gelug Conference (Dharamsala, June 12th 2000) We meet here today with Ganden Tri Rinpoche, the representative of Jamgön Gyelwa (Lama Tsong Khapa), chiefly gracing us with his presence. The abbots representing the three seats of Sera, Drepung, Ganden, as well as those of Tashi Lhunpo, Gyutö and Gyumei tantric colleges have joined us; as have abbots and former abbots who are here on behalf of the various other Gelug monasteries. It seems though that the Manali representative has not been able to join us though (laughter)1. Anyway as well as all of these guests I also have been able to attend this Gelug conference. The organisation of these international Gelug conferences and the general concern for the maintenance and promotion of the teaching is admirable. I would like to thank all of you for your concern and for having put in such hard work. Given the significance of this event, I would like to encourage everyone, for the space of these few days, to dispense with ostentatious posing and the empty formalities of ceremony. Let’s try to get to the heart of the matter. We have now gained quite a bit of experience. So let us utilise that to focus on what problems we face and give some thought to how we can improve things. Our consideration of these matters should be careful. I have high hopes that this will prove to be an open forum for the discussion of the important issues and will generally prove to be a success.
