en de Irakese massavernietigingswapens van George Bush Jr illustreren, is het verzinnen van verhaaltjes een geducht wapen om fictie in realiteit om te toveren. Maar deze hedendaagse specialiteit van de marketing en de politiek heeft nu ook zijn equivalent in de genrecinema, dat zich meer en meer laat inspireren door de realiteit. En wat dat betreft is de BIFFF 2016 selectie echt getekend door deze verankering in het alledaagse. Of het nu gaat om de ziekte van het moment, de burn-out (The Lesson, Banjo, Uptake Fear...), of ecologische bekommernissen over fossiele brandstoffen en het ondermijnende mollenwerk van de menselijke soort (The Wave, The Survivalist, Into the Forest…); genrecinema evolueert steeds meer tot een verontrustend klankbord van de kwalen van de 21ste eeuw. Want, als er twee paden zijn die niet bestemd waren om elkaar te kruisen, dan wel die van de fantastiek en de werkelijkheid. Maar goed, we zijn hier niet om jullie koude rillingen te bezorgen. Daar zijn er al meer dan genoeg van in ons programma. En nu we het toch hebben over het programma, de groothandelaars in fijn gedoseerde rillingen zijn opnieuw present op deze hoogmis van de fantastiek. Alex de la Iglesia (My Big Night), Rob Zombie (31), Takashi Miike (Yakuza Apocalypse) of Anders Thomas Jensen (Men & Chicken) zijn goed vertegenwoordigd op het BIFFF met hun nieuwe krachttoeren, naast echte evenementenfilms zoals Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Hardcore Henry en Les Visiteurs: La Révolution. Samen met een steeds sterkere Koreaanse vertegenwoordiging, gaat het een diabolisch feest worden! En, omdat we voor familiehereniging zijn, hebben we besloten om enkele vrienden uit te nodigen voor onze jaarlijkse hoogmis: Bai Ling (The Crow, Red Corner, Wild Wild West), Luigi Cozzi (Starcrash, Hercules, Contamination), Jaume Balaguero (Rec, Sleep Tight, Fragile), Marc Caro (Delicatessen, La Cité des Enfants Perdus, Dante 01) en - last but not least - Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, Tusk, Yoga Hosers), die die samen met Jaume Balaguero, zal toetreden tot het Genootschap van de Ridders van de Raaf 2016. Wat de nieuwigheden betreft zijn we, na jaren van onhoudbare druk uit de vier windstreken, eindelijk overstag gegaan. Een niet-competitieve sectie internationale korte films, gespreid over maar liefst drie vertoningssessies, treedt toe tot ons hallucinante aanbod. Gratis Master Classes in alle genres, knotsgekke animaties, de roemruchte Zombifff Parade en de 2de Zombifff'lympics, het Vampierenbal en heel wat andere evenementen zullen op jullie netvliezen blijven plakken tijdens dertien onvergetelijke dagen, heel ver weg van alle tendentieuze steekvlambangmakerij in deze troebele tijden.
