THE 22ND ANNUAL WASHINGTON, DC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 24 – MAY 4, 2008 THE WASHINGTON, DC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL A world of films…a window into our world. Whether experienced in movie theaters, on DVDs or television in our homes, on our iPods or computers, films are the major communications media of our time. Hollywood films dominate commercial cinema. However, scores of talented filmmakers around the globe produce thou- sands of quality films that speak with a different voice, provide a different point of view, and tell different stories. Presenting these films in the nation’s capital is the purpose of Filmfest DC. Photo: Chad Evans Wyatt Film festivals are a journey of Tony Gittens, Festival Director and Shirin Ghareeb, Assistant Director discovery, a visual and thought provoking adventure into how people see and interpret our world. Every Filmfest DC is different and every film is unique from every other film in the festival. Together, they comprise an amazing representation of human imagination, commitment and talent. The festival has two special focuses this year — Politics & Film and New Latin Ameri- can Cinema. Obviously, politics are especially prominent during this election season and we wanted to explore the role affairs of state play in people’s every day lives. Latin American filmmakers are always a treasure trove of inventive storytelling. The di- verse selection of new work we have gathered from the Spanish-speaking world (in- cluding Spain) are moving, humorous, and insightful. None of this would be possible without the many dedicated people who have shared their time and talents with Filmfest DC.

Monday, April 26, 2021 | No. 165 One of the things moviegoers like most about going to theatres is seeing films on the Big Screen, "the way they were meant to be seen." What people don't realize is that when films started in the mid-1890s, there were neither screens nor projectors. The very short films of that era were meant to be seen individually by looking into peep show machines in arcades. Those Kinetoscope devices were one of many inventions from Thomas Edison's factory in West Orange, NJ. Since Edison was monetizing his Kinetoscopes quite well, he had no interest in developing a machine to project film images on walls. Others, however, saw a big future in showing films to groups of people. Peep show owners, in fact, were very vocal in pressing Edison to devise a Film projection to large audiences was much more way to show life size images on arcade walls. This led to the Vitascope profitable than viewing through individual kiosks, since projection system, developed by Washington, DC inventor Thomas Armat, fewer machines were needed in proportion to the but then marketed by Edison's organization as if it were his own invention. number of viewers - Click to Play The first public Vitascope screening took place April 23, 1896 at Koster & Biel's Music Hall, a vaudeville house in New York's Herald Square at 34th Street near Broadway, the site today of Macy's. It would have premiered three days earlier, but it took longer than expected to install the machinery. That first night audience was dazzled by film images projected on a 20 foot canvas screen set within a gilded frame.

Their journey in search of their true father takes them to the small, insular Danish island of Ork, where they stumble upon three additional halfbrothers—each also sporting hereditary harelips and lunatic tendencies—living in a dilapidated mansion overrun by barn animals. Initially unwelcome by their newfound kin, the two visitors stubbornly wear them down until they’re reluctantly invited to stay. As the misfit bunch get to know each other, they unwittingly uncover a deep family secret that ultimately binds them together. This inventively bizarre and outlandish comedy is directed by acclaimed, Oscar®winning director Anders Thomas Jensen and also stars David Dencik (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.) DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT ANDERS THOMAS JENSEN My intentions are to build on the universe that I have worked with in my previous three films: Flickering Lights, The Green Butchers, and Adam’s Apples.
