In line with this tradition, in this special English language issue, we present a selection of articles published in “Kino” in the last year. They include reviews, interviews, as well as articles concerning the history of Polish cinema and opinion columns. However, we focus on the most interesting Polish feature films (of which 41 have been made there between the beginning of 2007 and May 2008), as well as documentary and animated films of the last year. Some of them could be seen at various international festivals, where they received numerous awards. The most prestigious award, an Oscar, came to the short animated film, “Peter and the Wolf”, which is a British-Polish co-production, directed by Suzie Templeton and made in the Studio Se-Ma-For in Łódź. On the other hand, the most awarded Polish film was “Tricks” by Andrzej Jakimowski, which till April 2008 received 12 awards, including at the festivals in Gdynia, Venice, Tokyo, Mannheim, Sao Paulo and Miami. However, what counts more than awards is the fact that Polish viewers have regained pleasure in watching Polish films.

International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • “Aspects of Danish Cinema”
Programme of Danish Film Screenings at the Danish Institute at Athens 2018 “Aspects of Danish Cinema”. By Ioanna Athanassatou/Film Historic at the Greek Open University & the University of Athens Screening on the 26th of April 2018 Silent heart (2014) by Bille August In film screening programme of the last 2 years, we have had the chance to see I line of Danish movies from Carl Dreyer, Lars von Trier, Susanne Bier and Thomas Vinterberg. Today we have chosen to screen “Silent heart” - in Danish ”Stille hjerte” and in Greek “Αθόρυβη καρδιά” (2014) by Bille August, the fourth movie this year. Bille August is considered the total opposite to Lars Von Trier and Vinterberg with a great international reputation. The filmography of Bille August includes two movies that both were awarded with the Golden Palms in Cannes: “Pelle the Conqueror” (1988) and “The best intentions” (1992). In these movies, including today´s, the director is closer to the cinematic perception of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (Valoukos 2003, page 630), avoiding formalistic searching, but focusing on the mental state of his heroes. When August directed the movie in 2014, he was inspired by the Scandinavian drama of Ibsen and Strindberg, but also by the philosophic/religious meditation of Søren Kierkegaard. “Silent heart” touches upon the very complex and emotional issue of euthanasia. It was awarded at International festivals and was admitted at the European Art House. The movie is about the family gathering of three generations, coming together for the weekend inorder to say their last goodbye to Esther (Ghita Nørby) – mother and grandmother – who is sick from the incurable disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

  • Nature and the Feminine in Lars Von Trier's Antichrist
PARRHESIA NUMBER 13 • 2011 • 177-89 VIOLENT AFFECTS: NATURE AND THE FEMININE IN LARS VON TRIER’S ANTICHRIST Magdalena Zolkos [Of all my films] Antichrist comes closest to a scream. Lars von Trier INTRODUCTION / INVITATION: “THE NATURE OF MY FEARS”1 Lars von Trier’s 2009 film Antichrist, produced by the Danish company Zentropa, tells a story of parental loss, mourning, and despair that follow, and ostensibly result from, the tragic death of a child. The film stars two protagonists, identified by impersonal gendered names as She (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and He (Willem Dafoe). This generic economy of naming suggests that Antichrist, in spite of, or perhaps because of, the eschatological signification of its title, is a story of origins. Antichrist stages a quasi-religious return (within the Abrahamic tradition) to a lapsarian space where the myth of the female agency of the originary transgression,2 and the subsequent establishment of human separateness from nature, are told by von Trier as a story of his own psychic introspection. In the words of Joanne Bourke, professor of history at Birkbeck College known for her work on sexual violence and on history of fear and hatred, Antichrist is a re-telling of the ancient Abrahamic mythology framed as a question “what is to become of humanity once it discovers it has been expelled from Eden and that Satan is in us.”3 This mythological trope grapples with the other-than-human presence, as a demonic or animalistic trace, found at the very core of the human.4 At the premiere of Antichrist at the 2009

  • Ten Years Supporting, Delivering & Promoting the Whole Spectrum of Animation
TEN YEARS SUPPORTING, DELIVERING & PROMOTING THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF ANIMATION Directors Message Wow – we made it to our 10th anniversary!! Who would have thought it? From very humble beginnings – our first festival in 2004 screened at the now-defunct Rupert Street Cinema in Piccadilly – to LIAF 2013, 10 days at 3 different venues. We have survived - sort of. Over 10 years we’ve received more than 12,000 entries, screened more than 2,500 films, and had some of the most talented animators in the world come and hang out with us. And we’ve had a ball on the way. It’s time to blow our own trumpet. As well as being the largest festival of it’s kind in the UK in terms of films and programmes screened, we have a substantial touring component and we run satellite events all year-round. We’ve screened at festivals, cinemas, theatres and colleges all around the world and in the UK and hopefully we have spread the word that animation is a valid artform that is only limited by the animator’s imagination. In short, our maxim is that in animation anything can happen. Long may this be. There are far too may people to thank here (hopefully you know who you are) but the guidance and immense work-rate of my co-Director Malcolm Turner has to be acknowledged. Way back when in our ground zero - actually in the year 1999 - I still vividly recall that very first meeting Malcolm and I had with our then-colleague Susi Allender in the back garden of our Melbourne flat.

The Existential Framework of Zentropa’s Narrative By Gabriel Giralt Spring 2001 Issue of KINEMA THE EXISTENTIAL FRAMEWORK OF ZENTROPA’S NARRATIVE: A CLASH OF TWO NATIONAL IDENTITIES ”... The difference between what you should be and what you are is something that means quite alottome. That’s why idealism, or the idealist, interest me as much as they do”. Lars Von Trier. (Tranceformer: A Portrait of Lars Von Trier) Lars Von Trier is considered by some film critics to be Denmark’s most gifted director since Carl T. Dreyer. His highly technical and innovative style have brought him international recognition at prominent film festivals, including the most prestigious prize Palme d’Or at Cannes, which he received recently for his work Dancer in the Dark (2000). His innovative approach to narrative film is made manifest in his co-authoring and co-founding of ”Dogma 95” a group intent on reforming mainstream aesthetics in order to return to a perceived lost authenticity in cinema.(1) This reform was crystallized in a ”vow of chastity” manifesto of ten technical mandates intended to provide the rudiments guaranteed to enable the filmmaker to capture reality in its own habitat without the artificial veneer of commercial cinema. This new undertaking on the part of Von Trier is not considered to be entirely original. The reformative group, ”Dogma 95”, views itself as resuming the cinematic ideals put forward by the Italian Neorealists and the French New Wave. In some measure all of these movements, like ”Dogma 95”, are reactions against the superficial and seamless commercialized films of their day.
