Interview with Mads Mikkelsen (Actor)

It’s been almost 15 years since this movie. How do you think your acting has evolved since then? I don’t know. I remember it was a very risky thing we did. Even though this was a comedy like Flickering Lights, the characters were more extreme. It was almost like putting theatre on film. We were all very nervous but we loved the story and the characters so You never forget the taste of human flesh much that we kept on doing it. This is one of the films I’m most proud of doing in my entire career! We did it and we got away with it. My character is a fantastic, pathetic, egomaniac narcissist that is so hard not to like. It’s an achievement for this story.

How did you prepare for such a complex character? It’s always in Anders Thomas’ stories. The script is there and then we work a little more on it. I tend to go also a little more extreme than the script sometimes does. So if there’s any line where somebody could say what he’s saying, I don’t find it interesting. It has to be very specific in his way of saying things. Then we work on his manners. He was a martyr, always offended by anything that happened. Physically, we cut my hair in a completely stupid way. I remember Anders Thomas was there.

So you actually cut your hair in that silly way? It wasn’t a prosthetic forehead or a wig? Yes. We cut it because I found it difficult. First of all, I hate wearing wigs ― it’s always annoying. They are very difficult to wear. You would always have to stop; something is wrong, the wig is not sitting in the right way and so on. I just decided let’s cut it off because it’s much easier to handle. Then I had to wear hats for like three months because I looked like an idiot. When the film was finished, I had to take down all the hair.

This character somehow links to your Hannibal in the terms of cannibalism; did you use some of your experience of this character for Hannibal? You can always find a link. It’s a total coincidence I never thought about. Hannibal is obviously doing it for other reasons; he’s twisted the world upside down ― he sees beauty where the rest of us see horror. Instead, Svend has no craving for human flesh at all. He’s not a killer but sees success coming and that’s his egomaniac side coming.

EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | APRIL 2017 | 5 How do you make the jump from these local films to Casino Royale and now Hollywood? It was always my choice. Before Hollywood called me, I did not have a choice ― it was just me working in Denmark. And mine is a small country; if you do a film a year, people start getting tired of watching you. So it was a lucky break that I got a chance in Hollywood and no, I can go back and forth. I can still pick the stuff I find interesting. It’s always very important that you like what you do, whether it’s a small or big film.

And how did you get the part in Casino Royale, a role that changed your career internationally? I was not expecting it at all. I got a phone call about an audition and I couldn’t make it because I had a meeting and so on. But eventually I got the job because one of the producers, Barbara Broccoli, loved the film ’s and she would love to have me on Casino Royale. It has been my Danish work that opened the doors in Hollywood. I hadn’t been there knocking on doors.

When you first had this experience in a big production, what did you think were the main differences between those and that local Danish productions you took part in before? I think the biggest difference is the enormous budget. And when you have that budget, you have many producers, many chefs that want to cook the film. So the process when you and the director come up with ideas to make the film better is not as fast as in Danish productions because it has to go around a lot of important people. But having said that, I was still surprised that even though there are 500 people on set, we would still sit down in a small group ― maybe me and Daniel (Craig) and the director ― to discuss the scene to make it work.

Did you feel more pressure when filming Casino Royale? This was a time of changing the face of James Bond and Daniel Craig’s first as the agent, which received plenty of critiques before filming started. I always feel pressure. I want to do the best I can do ― the best film in the world. But I didn’t feel it was bigger in Casino Royale. I actually think that there was much more pressure in The Green Butchers because we were out on a limb. I’m sure Daniel felt a lot of pressure because he was the new Bond and he would always be judged for it. He did the only right thing ― he dug into the work and concentrated to do as best as he could. Now he turned out to be the best Bond ever!

Who are your inspirations when it comes to acting? I always think I don’t want to copy anyone. Inspiration you can get from everything in your life. When I was a kid, my biggest heroes were Bruce Lee and Buster Keaton. Looking back now, I understand why. They had a tremendous charisma.

What do you think are the main challenges for Danish cinema to gain more attention worldwide? We made a lot of changes in the past. We made cinema more realistic, hyper-realistic. It was the people doing the films they wanted to make. It was out of necessity that we changed and wanted it to happen. In this generation, they have nothing to change. It’s not as easy for them to do it. But they have to find their own stories. If they do it, we’ll continue to enjoy success in Danish films. If they just copy, it wouldn’t work.

Why do you think of the Scandinavian TV series that are gaining more popularity now (Borgen, Fortitude, The Killing)? I think it’s due to the success Danish films have had. There is a certain amount of attention on Danish TV because there’s been a lot of attention on Danish films. They have brought a lot of the tradition of the filmmaking into television. Also, the people working on television are very professional ― actors and directors alike.

Interview with Mads Mikkelsen (Actor)

This was an even older film; what do you remember of the days of filming? I remember it was the first time I made a comedy. This was a film directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, who was a growing factor in scriptwriting, but this was his first time as a director. You could immediately see that this was different from any other films made in Denmark before that time. He created a universe in its own reality that was not based on romantic comedy but on four friends who had nothing in common but got together for different reasons.

I remember I thought it was beautifully poetic and hysterically funny as well. Something very rare to find because if you do romantic comedy, it’s very cute. This was very poetic and funny at the same time.

8 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | APRIL 2017 | How did you get to participate in the film, which actually started your long-time collaboration with the director? I did it because I knew him personally and from different places. He was always everywhere. Always very intimidating and funny. We clicked on really well together. He has a funny way of seeing life and I believe I do as well. He asked me if I wanted to be in this film.

How did you prepare for this character and the violence he sometimes expresses? We chose to do what we call ‘cardinal things’ in these characters. They have some extreme things in all of them, which you can see in the flashbacks. Regarding the violence, that was easy. That was his language, what he knew and what he did. If my character had some small problem, he would kick the sh*t out of it. The approach was quite radical but it is characteristic of Anders Thomas. His characters have a way of communicating and develop from there.

This movie started your collaboration with director Anders Thomas Jensen. Do you still keep in contact? Are there any projects you would work on in the future? We are very much in touch. He recently moved to Los Angeles and I’ve visited a few times there. The last thing we did together was Men & Chicken, which was two years ago. There was a gap of ten years where we didn’t work together.

He’s writing a project that somebody else is directing and I’m in it. We’re always working together somehow. I can’t imagine if he does anything as a director that I won’t be in it because we share so many things.

So, you’re a great tandem when it comes to cinema . . . I think we are. He is an extremely clever and brilliant man. There is nobody like him back home and I have never seen anybody do what he does. He has a flavor of David Lynch and the Cohen Brothers but he’s still authentic. His stories Mads Mikkelsen evolve around small towns, small families but with giant problems. Since this film, you’re portrayed as a villain; why do you think the industry has framed you in that category? It’s hard to say. I’ve played more good guys or heroes than I’ve played villains in my life. I’d say that my character in Flickering Lights is not a villain at all. He’s part of a friendship ― he just has a characteristic, which is that he’s very violent. But they are all villains and criminals.

But the reason why the Americans have done that is that I think it’s quite normal for them; when you have an accent, that’s what they see you as. Sometimes it’s the French or Spanish. It used to be the English. Now it’s some of the Danes. They don’t see us as anything else but villains. But having said that, I’ve been fortunate enough to develop different characters. Hannibal is very different from the guy in Doctor Strange.

During these years, the Dogme 95 trend was gaining a lot of attention; were you ever tempted to participate in a film of that style or with Lars von Trier? I did a Dogme film with Susanne Bier and the writer was Anders Thomas Jensen ― it’s a film called Open Hearts. I was part of that but I wasn’t super eager to be part of it because it didn’t interest me too much. I was already doing films with Nicolas Winding Refn and they were in many ways much more Dogme films than the Dogme films for the mere factor that we didn’t have any money or budget. For me, all those rules were very fine to put them on the map but, as an actor, I didn’t need those rules. I mean, of course, it has to be about the story, about the characters ― if that’s not the case, I don’t see a reason why you would make a film.

Interview with Cecilia Forss (Actress)

How did you get involved in the project of this adaptation? The Danish producer contacted my agent, Laura Munsterhjelm, and she recommended me. Shortly after, we had a meeting in Copenhagen and then I got the part.

What attracted you to participate in this Scandinavian version of Black Widows? I really liked this weird genre. I thought it was an absurd and tragicomic story, which really attracted me to participate.

Why shouldn’t viewers across the world miss any episodes of Black Widows? Because it’s fun, tragic and absurd and it’s great that woman are the bad guys for once.

How challenging was it to adapt a role of a series that was so successful in its original version? It always hard to do a remake of a successful series or movie but, in this case, I hadn’t seen anything of it before I got the part so I decided to not watch anything of the original version, so I could be free and do my thing.

How did you prepare for the role of Rebeka? I always try to take pieces of myself and my friends that remind me of the character and the character’s experiences. This time I did the same.

What do you think are Rebeka’s main characteristics? What defines her in the series? She has a big heart and she’s the one you can trust. But she is also naive and weak when love comes in the picture.

Are you working on any projects at the moment? Can you tell us something about them? I just finished the second season ofBlack Widows so I’m still a little bit in that bubble mentally. Regarding my future, I can’t tell you anything about it, unfortunately. It’s still a secret what my new project will be.
