  • Gendered Mobility, Legacy and Transformative Sacrifice in the Screen Stories of Susanne Bier
Networking Knowledge Position-in-frame (Jun. 2017) Position-in-frame: gendered mobility, legacy and transformative sacrifice in the screen stories of Susanne Bier. CATH MOORE, Deakin University ABSTRACT An integral connection point between the screenplay and reader/viewer is the protagonist’s transformative journey. The construction of this narrative backbone is critical to the articulation of overarching thematic concerns and story premise but also reflects the story creator’s worldview- one often coloured by representations of gender. The Hollywood model certainly divides narrative function along gender lines but does this representation hold true within a different cultural context? This article examines the selected screen stories of Danish director Susanne Bier whose partnership with screenwriter Anders Thomas Jensen is one of Denmark’s most successful film partnerships. Employing a case study methodology I examine the dramatic function of and agency afforded screen characters and the critical dynamic between cultural landscape, practitioner preference and narrative inquiry. Key to this address is an exploration of mobility, legacy and sacrifice as textual considerations of gender and its utilisation as transnational narrative strategy. KEYWORDS Transnational, mobility, transformative, collaboration, gaze Refocusing a masculinised gaze? With persistent ubiquity Hollywood continues to cast a dominant shadow over much of the global film & TV landscape. Similarly pervasive is the figurehead of such industrial influence - the male protagonist

A desperate young mother leaves her 13‐year‐old twin sons at their grandmother’s house in the country, despite the fact that this grandmother is a cruel and bestial alcoholic. The villagers call her “the Witch” because she is rumored to have poisoned her husband long ago. Previously pampered, the twins must learn how to survive alone in their new, rural surroundings. They realize that the only way to cope with the absurd and inhumane world of adults and war is to become completely unfeeling and merciless. By learning to free themselves from hunger, pain and emotion, they will be able to endure future hardships. So they begin their own series of studies: they fortify their spirits by reading the Bible and learning foreign languages. They practice every day to harden their bodies and minds. They hold their hands over flames, cut their legs, arms and chests with a knife and pour alcohol right on their wounds. They desensitize themselves to insults and learn to ignore the more insidious appeals of sentiment and love.

March Susanne Bier's 'In A Better World', Thomas Vinterberg's 'Submarino', Nicolas Wind Refn's 'Valhalla Rising' and last but not least 'A Family' by Pernille Fischer Christensen. In A Better World - Opening film Caterogy: Drama Director: Susanne Bier Composer: Johan Söderqvist Apperances: Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyhrberg, Ulrich Thomsen Country: Denmark DK Release: 2010 Duration: 113 min. Language: Danish / Swedish / English. English subtitles. Latvian headphone translation. IN A BETTER WORLD sets out to explore the limitations we encounter in trying to control our society as well as our personal lives. It asks whether our own “advanced” culture is the model for a better world, or whether the same disarray found in lawlessness is lurking beneath surface of our civilization. Are we immune to chaos, or obliviously teetering on the verge of disorder? Anton is a doctor who commutes between his home in an idyllic town in Denmark, and his work at an African refugee camp. In these two very different worlds, he and his family are faced with conflicts that lead them to difficult choices between revenge and forgiveness. Anton and his wife Marianne, who have two young sons, are separated and struggling with the possibility of divorce. Their older, ten-year- old son Elias is being bullied at school, until he is defended by Christian, a new boy who has just moved from London with his father, Claus.

When Lars’ art dealer Ronny arranges a teaching job in a small town as a “therapeutic measure” to stir up his creative juices, things don’t quite turn out as planned. At first, life in the peaceful small town seems rosy, as he settles in and impresses beautiful fellow colleague Leslie by taking in the brawny, mute Eddie after the latter’s caregiver passes away. But Lars soon discovers that the façade of serenity hides something unimaginable: Eddie suffers from a rare form of sleepwalking that transforms him from a docile, cereal-obsessed art student into a ravenous sleepwalking cannibal. Initially horrified by Eddie’s dark secret, Lars becomes enthralled by the not-so-gentle giant: at long last, here’s the muse he’d been searching for! Exceptional art comes at a very high price...and how far is Lars willing to go for his next masterpiece? Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal is a fresh, clever satire about artistic inspiration that pushes boundaries with its unique blend of offbeat humor, twisted friendships, sweet-hearted romance, and the gory realities of sleepwalking cannibalism.

  • In a Better World Directed by Susanne Bier 2011 Suanne Bier Is a Very
Translation from Greek to English: In a Better World directed by Susanne Bier 2011 Suanne Bier is a very important director who has been closely connected with the Dogma 95 movement, but who took a different direction in her later career, directing a line of movies that were well received by the audience with several awards, but that also received negative reviews. In 2011 the movie, “In a Better world” won an Oscar. While the title of the movie in Danish is “The Revenge”, the film was promoted in Greece with the title “Ισως αύριο- Maybe tomorrow”. The diversity in the title might insinuate the complexity of the issues in this moralistic- philosophic movie as well as the many levels of the scenario by Anders Thomas Jensen. The story takes place in 2 different film spaces – in a refugee camp in Africa in the dessert and in a Northeuropean town in the outskirts of Denmark where daily and dull routines are unfolded. The protagonists are 2 fathers with their sons. Anton, a doctor working at a refugee camp in Africa (played by Michael Persbrandt) and father of the 10 year old Elias (played by Markus Rigaard) is constantly absent in the life of his son as well as in his marriage with another doctor (played by Trine Dyrholm). Claus (played by Ulrich Thomsen) is a businessman who has recently lost his wife from cancer and who is facing the anger and accusation from his son Kristian (played by William John Nielsen) because of his constant absence. The parents, who are mentally absent to their sons while occupied with their professional lives, are incapable of being part of the boys personal lives.

Their journey in search of their true father takes them to the small, insular Danish island of Ork, where they stumble upon three additional halfbrothers—each also sporting hereditary harelips and lunatic tendencies—living in a dilapidated mansion overrun by barn animals. Initially unwelcome by their newfound kin, the two visitors stubbornly wear them down until they’re reluctantly invited to stay. As the misfit bunch get to know each other, they unwittingly uncover a deep family secret that ultimately binds them together. This inventively bizarre and outlandish comedy is directed by acclaimed, Oscar®winning director Anders Thomas Jensen and also stars David Dencik (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.) DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT ANDERS THOMAS JENSEN My intentions are to build on the universe that I have worked with in my previous three films: Flickering Lights, The Green Butchers, and Adam’s Apples. I want to make a sterilized narrative, where you can move in and out between genres, to build on the “no time / no place” universe in which I’ve been telling my stories previously.
