Title: A Therapeutic Model for Grief and Bereavement: Exploring the Efficacy of a Transpersonal Multidimensional Protocol

This integrative study explored the effects of a yoga-based, multimodal treatment protocol encouraging deeper experience of, and insight into the body/mind system within the context of supportive community. Combined qualitative and quantitative research methods revealed statistically significant improvement in grieving participants suggesting that somatic based multimodal approaches are effective for those in bereavement.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research focused on integrating Yoga and Buddhism into western psychology as a universally applicable intervention. Yoga practices include breath work, movement, guided relaxation and meditation, which, when blended with western therapeutic techniques, facilitate holistic processing in a safe, empathic, and non-judgmental way. Hundreds of empirical studies demonstrate the beneficial effects of yoga in treating depression, anxiety, chronic pain, heart disease, and cancer. While my research expanded upon the focus of reducing negative symptoms, it also explored the positive effects of yoga, which include enhancing psychological qualities such as compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. I helped to broaden the paradigm for research in yoga, and psychology in general, to include a concept of optimal wellbeing that is a more holistic, systemic approach to health. My intention was to conduct rigorous empirical research that moves toward this paradigm shift by exploring the positive effects of yoga linked with other modalities across diverse populations.
