IN 1999 A SHOW OPENED IN LONDON THAT USHERED IN A NEW GENRE OF MUSICAL THEATRE. THE SHOW WAS MAMMA MIA AND THE GENRE WAS THE JUKE BOX MUSICAL. A JUKE BOX MUSICAL IS A SHOW THAT USES ALREADY WELL KNOWN MUSIC OF A SINGLE ARTIST OR A PERIOD AND INTERSPERSES IT WITH AN ORIGINAL STORY. BEFORE MAMMA MIA THERE HAD BEEN SHOWS THAT USED POPULAR MUSIC BUT THEY WERE MOSTLY REVUES WITH NO PLOT OR A BIOGRAPHICAL TRIBUTE TO A SINGLE ARTIST. BUT MAMMA MIA WAS AN ORIGINAL PLOT THAT USED THE MUSIC OF ABBA TO HELP TELL THE STORY.
