This is a Recovery Plan prepared under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Australian Government, in partnership with the relevant States, facilitates the development of recovery plans to detail the actions needed for the conservation of threatened native flora and fauna. This document revises the plan developed previously for the Murray hardyhead for the period 2008–2013 (Backhouse et al. 2008). Once considered widespread and common throughout its range, the species has suffered a large decline in range and abundance, and is now one of the most threatened fish species in Australia. The Murray hardyhead is listed as nationally Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. It is likely to be extremely rare in New South Wales and survives in only a few isolated locations in Victoria and South Australia. All populations are threatened by altered hydrology and alien species and are susceptible to localised extinction. This document represents the third revision of the Murray hardyhead National Recovery Plan. The Plan summarises the species distribution, biology and ecology, threats and recovery objectives and actions necessary to ensure the long-term survival and recovery of Murray hardyhead. 1 Species Information Description Murray hardyhead (Craterocephalus fluviatilis McCulloch, 1912) is an endemic, small (<100 mm), gold to silver-green fish (<85 mm total length). Two dorsal fins are present, the first of which has 4–7 spines, the second, one spine and 5–8 rays. The anal fin is opposite the second dorsal fin, is small, and has one spine and 6–9 rays.     This Conservation Advice was approved by the Minister on 3 March 2012 Approved Conservation Advice for Craterocephalus fluviatilis (Murray hardyhead) (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this Conservation Advice was approved; this includes existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this species. Description Craterocephalus fluviatilis, McCulloch 1912, Family Atherinidae, also known as Murray hardyhead, are a small highly mobile schooling fish that attains 76 mm length (Ivantsoff and Crowley, 1996; Ebner and Raadik, 2001; Ellis, 2005). They are moderately deep bodied with a small protrusible mouth which projects forward as a tube when open (Crowley and Ivantsoff, 1990; Ellis, 2005). The colour varies from silver or silvery-green to dark golden dorsally, with a silvery-black (sometimes golden or reddish) mid-lateral stripe running along the body, and a pale abdomen with a silvery iridescent sheen (Crowley and Ivantsoff, 1990; Ellis, 2005; Hammer and Wedderburn, 2008). The body and fins may develop an orange sheen during the spawning period (Ebner and Raadik 2001; Ellis, 2005). Conservation Status The Murray hardyhead is listed as endangered. This species is eligible for listing as endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as: it has undergone a severe reduction in numbers in the last 10 years, and recovery may depend upon translocations or restocking of hatchery-bred fish, and it has a restricted area of occupancy, which is precarious for the species’ survival due to ongoing threats (TSSC, 2011).

No. PD54 File No. FSC 12/03 PROPOSED DETERMINATION Craterocephalus amniculus – Darling River hardyhead population in the Hunter River catchment as an Endangered Population. The Fisheries Scientific Committee, established under Part 7A of the Fisheries Management Act 1994 (the Act), is proposing to list the Hunter River population of Craterocephalus amniculus – Darling River hardyhead as an ENDANGERED POPULATION in Part 2 of Schedule 4 of the Act. The listing of endangered populations is provided for by Part 7A, Division 2 of the Act. The Fisheries Scientific Committee, with reference to the criteria relevant to this species, prescribed by Part 16 of the Fisheries Management (General) Regulation 2010 (the Regulation) has found that: Background 1) Darling River hardyhead – Craterocephalus amniculus (Crowley and Ivanstoff 1990) is a valid, recognised taxon and is a species as defined in the Act. 2) The species distribution includes the Border Rivers, Gwydir and Namoi catchments of the Murray-Darling Basin above 200 m and up to at least 1,030 m ASL and the Hunter catchment between 50 m and at least 330 m ASL (Battaglene 1985, Adams et al. 2011, OZCAM database, Tarmo Raadik, unpublished data, Fisheries NSW Freshwater Fish Research Database). Although its distribution extends into the Queensland portion of the Border Rivers catchment, the majority of the species distribution is in New Species Wales. 3) Although limited to only two specimens from the Hunter catchment, genetic analysis suggests little genetic divergence of the Murray-Darling Basin and Hunter populations (Adams et al. 2011).
