Approved Conservation Advice for Craterocephalus Fluviatilis (Murray Hardyhead) (S266b of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999)
This Conservation Advice was approved by the Minister on 3 March 2012 Approved Conservation Advice for Craterocephalus fluviatilis (Murray hardyhead) (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this Conservation Advice was approved; this includes existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this species. Description Craterocephalus fluviatilis, McCulloch 1912, Family Atherinidae, also known as Murray hardyhead, are a small highly mobile schooling fish that attains 76 mm length (Ivantsoff and Crowley, 1996; Ebner and Raadik, 2001; Ellis, 2005). They are moderately deep bodied with a small protrusible mouth which projects forward as a tube when open (Crowley and Ivantsoff, 1990; Ellis, 2005). The colour varies from silver or silvery-green to dark golden dorsally, with a silvery-black (sometimes golden or reddish) mid-lateral stripe running along the body, and a pale abdomen with a silvery iridescent sheen (Crowley and Ivantsoff, 1990; Ellis, 2005; Hammer and Wedderburn, 2008). The body and fins may develop an orange sheen during the spawning period (Ebner and Raadik 2001; Ellis, 2005). Conservation Status The Murray hardyhead is listed as endangered. This species is eligible for listing as endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as: it has undergone a severe reduction in numbers in the last 10 years, and recovery may depend upon translocations or restocking of hatchery-bred fish, and it has a restricted area of occupancy, which is precarious for the species’ survival due to ongoing threats (TSSC, 2011). -

The study area was the floodplain of the Murray River and its anabranches, including the Edward-Wakool system, from below Hume Dam to the upper end of Lake Alexandrina. The components of the study were: · Literature Review A comprehensive bibliography was compiled on the floodplain vegeta tion, its environment and the impact ofman's activities. The literature was reviewed and summarised. · Floristic Survey A field survey was carried out, visiting 112 sites throughout the study area and collecting vegetation data from 335 plots. Data collected were the species present, their relative abundance, the condition of the eucalypts, the amount ofeucalypt regeneration and indices ofgrazing pressure. Brief studies were made of the effects of river regulation and salinisation at specific sites. Thirty-seven plant communities were identified from a numerical analyis ofthe floristic survey data. The differences reflect environmental changes both along the river and across the floodplain. The most important factors were identified as soil salinity levels and flooding frequency. -

For the Poplar Box Grassy Woodland on Alluvial Plains
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) (s266B) Conservation Advice (including listing advice) for the Poplar Box Grassy Woodland on Alluvial Plains 1 The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the EPBC Act to give advice to the Minister for the Environment (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee provided its advice on the Poplar Box Grassy Woodland on Alluvial Plains ecological community to the Minister as a draft of this conservation advice in April 2017, an updated version in April 2018 and also in June 2019. The Committee recommended that: o the ecological community merits listing as endangered under the EPBC Act; and o a recovery plan is not required for the ecological community at this time. 3. A draft conservation advice for this ecological community was made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that was relevant to the consideration of the ecological community. 4. In 2019, the Minister accepted the Committee’s advice, adopted this document as the approved conservation advice and agreed no recovery plan is required at this time. The Minister amended the list of threatened ecological communities under section 184 of the EPBC Act to include the Poplar Box Grassy Woodland on Alluvial Plains ecological community in the endangered category. 5. At the time of this advice, components of this ecological community were also listed under the Queensland Vegetation Management Act 1999. -

Threatened Species Scientific Committee’s Advice for the Wetlands and inner floodplains of the Macquarie Marshes 1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and has obligations to present advice to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Water (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee provided this advice on the Wetlands and inner floodplains of the Macquarie Marshes ecological community to the Minister in June 2013. 3. A copy of the draft advice for this ecological community was made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that was relevant to the consideration of the ecological community. 4. This advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time it was assessed: this includes scientific literature, government reports, extensive advice from consultations with experts, and existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this ecological community. 5. This ecological community was listed as critically enadangered from 13 August 2013 to 11 December 2013. The listing was disallowed on 11 December 2013.
