After I found them it took a minute to gain their audience. I kept glancing at the time knowing Jeff was due to arrive very soon. I tried to keep the explanation as short as possible and given my growing level of ex- citement, I suppose I didn’t articulate very well. With skeptical looks on their faces they assured me it would not be a problem and I remember thinking that they were convinced I was nuts. Next I bumped into Chuck Root and as fast as I could I told him what was about to fly in. As if on queue, high overhead a beautiful P-38 entered on the overhead ap- proach, out came the gear and moments later he was rolling out on the runway. I hope that as age begins to take away some of my memories, the one it will leave intact the longest is of the reactions that I wit- nessed that afternoon by dozens of hard- working volunteers who could not believe what they were seeing. To say that it was a total surprise is a most magnificent under- statement. Jeff bounced out of the airplane to a roar of approval. He saw me from a dis- tance and had the largest grin on his face you can imagine. WHEREAS, the Memphis Belle, a Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress, is arguably one of the five most famous aircraft in United States history. She is ranked with the Wright Brothers' Flyer, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, the Enola Gay, and Chuck Yeager's Bell X-1. The Memphis Belle is designated a "National Historic Treasure" by the United States Air Force; and WHEREAS, the Belle inspired two motion pictures: Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress, William Wyler's 1944 documentary, and a 1990 Hollywood feature film, Memphis Belle, produced by Mr. Wyler's daughter; and WHEREAS, the Memphis Belle was delivered in September 1942, to the 91st Bomb Group, U.S. Army Air Corps, at Dow Field, Maine. She was deployed first to Scotland, then to her permanent base at Bassingbourn, England, on October 14, 1942. Lt. Robert K. Morgan and his crew of nine men flew twenty-five combat missions, all but four in the Belle, with the 324th Bomb Squadron, U.S. 8th Air Force.     USAAF AIRFIELDS Guide and Map Introduction During the Second World War, the East of England became home to hundreds of US airmen. They began arriving in 1942, with many existing RAF (Royal Air Force) airfields made available to the USAAF (United States Army Air Force). By 1943 there were over 100,000 US airmen based in Britain. The largest concentration was in the East of England, where most of the 8th Air Force and some of the 9th were located on near a hundred bases. The 8th Air Force was the largest air striking force ever committed to battle, with the first units arriving in May 1942. The 9th Air Force was re-formed in England in October 1943 - it was the operator of the most formidable troop-carrying force ever assembled. Their arrival had an immediate impact on the East Anglian scene. This was the 'friendly invasion' - a time of jitterbugging dances and big band sounds, while the British got their first taste of peanut butter, chewing gum and Coke. Famous US bandleader Glenn Miller was based in the Bedford area (Bedfordshire), along with his orchestra during the Second World War. Close associations with residents of the region produced long lasting friendships, sometimes even marriage. At The Eagle pub in Cambridge (Cambridgeshire), and The Swan Hotel at Lavenham (Suffolk), airmen left their signatures on the ceiling/walls. The aircraft of the USAAF were the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator - used by the Bombardment Groups (BG); and the P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning and P-47 Thunderbolt - used by the Fighter Groups (FG).

Dick was CEO of Livingston Associates (CP Ward) and was on the Board of Directors for the NWM and the Genesee Country Village and Museum. Dick was predeceased by his wife, Joan. He is survived by two daughters, Catherine (David) Strong and Jennifer (Brian) Geer, and two grandchildren, Peytyn and Parker Geer. Aviator Dick worked hard all his life and aviation became his outlet. A commercially rated pilot, Dick discovered his love of flying when he was invited by a friend, Craig Johnston, to accompany him on a trip to NJ in the late 70’s. Bitten by the flying bug, he started lessons at the LeRoy airport and eventually received his pilot’s license. Needing something to fly, he became co-owner of a Cessna 172 with Craig. This eventually led to the purchase of a single engine Beechcraft Bonanza that Dick used traveling to Florida to manage projects that CP Ward was involved in there. Losing electrical power on one (or several) of his flights, he de- cided a twin engine aircraft was the way to go, so he upgraded to Dick in the Left seat of “Whiskey 7” a Beechcraft Baron.
