We investigate orthopteran communities in the natural landscape of the Russian Far East and compare the habitat require- ments of the species with those of the same or closely related species found in the largely agricultural landscape of central Europe. The study area is the 1,200 km2 Lazovsky State Nature Reserve (Primorsky region, southern Russian Far East) 200 km east of Vladi- vostok in the southern spurs of the Sikhote-Alin Mountains (134°E/43°N). The abundance of Orthoptera was recorded in August and September 2001 based on the number present in 20 randomly placed 1 m² quadrates per site. For each plot (i) the number of species of Orthoptera, (ii) absolute species abundance and (iii) fifteen environmental parameters characterising habitat structure and micro- climate were recorded. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used first to determine whether the Orthoptera occur in ecol- ogically coherent groups, and second, to assess their association with habitat characteristics. In addition, the number of species and individuals in natural and semi-natural habitats were compared using a t test. -

Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 62(2): 191–211. https://doi.org/10.3897/travaux.62.e48604 Abstract During 2013–2017, assemblages of bush-crickets and grasshoppers were surveyed in two neighbour- ing flysch mountains – Čergov Mts (48 sites) and Levočské vrchy Mts (62 sites) – in northern part of Western Carpathians. Species were sampled mostly at grasslands and forest edges along elevational gradient between 370 and 1220 m a.s.l. Within the entire area (ca 930 km2) we documented 54 species, representing 38% of Carpathian Orthoptera species richness. We found the same species number (45) in both mountain ranges with nine unique species in each of them. No difference in mean species rich- ness per site was found between the mountain ranges (mean ± SD = 12.5 ± 3.9). Elevation explained 2.9% of variation in site species richness. Elevation and mountain range identity explained 7.3% of assemblages composition. We found new latitudinal as well as longitudinal limits in the distribu- tion for several species. -

Faunistics and Ecology of the Grasshoppers and Crickets (Saltatoria) of the Dunes Along the Belgian Coast
Faunistics and ecology of the grasshoppers and crickets (Saltatoria) of the dunes along the Belgian coast by Kris DECLEER & Hendrik DEVRIESE Abstract Hitherto a total number of 23 species were recorded in the coastal dune area; this is about half of the Belgian Saltatoria fauna. Despite the overall deterioration of the former semi-natural dune landscape during the past decades, still 18 species were found after 1980. The actual presence of 3 additional species needs confirmation. Three species seem to have become extinct: Decticus verrucivorus, Gryllus campestris and Mecostethus grossus. Both in a Flemish and Belgian perspective, the coastal dunes still form a stronghold for several rare species, e.g. Conocephalus disco/or, Platycleis albopunctata, Tetrix ceperoi, Chorthippus albomarginatus and Oedipoda caerulescens. The importance of particular microclimatological conditions for the occurrence of most grasshoppers is stressed. The cessation in the beginning of the century of the agricultural practice of cattle grazing in the inner-dunes undoubtedly played an important role in the extinction process or the decrease of several species. An increased effort to remove considerable parts of dense scrub vegetations in former dune grasslands and the re-use of extensive grazing as a management practice can therefore strongly be recommended. Resume La faune des criquets et sauterelles (Saltatoria) du district des dunes littorales comprend 23 especes, soit environ la moitie de la faune belge. Malgre la deterioration complete des paysages semi-naturelles des dunes durant les dernieres decennies, 18 especes ont encore ete observees apres 1980. L'eventuelle presence de 3 autres especes doit etre confirmee. Trois especes peuvent etre considerees comme disparues: Decticus verrucivorus, Gryllus campestris et Mecostethus grossus. -

After a faunistic research conducted here, the Orthoptera fauna of the Cserhát region is summarized. The pool of formerly known 33 spe- cies is raised to 67, which is about 53% of the total Orthoptera fauna of Hungary. Seven of them (Acrida ungarica, Isophya modesta, Leptophyes discoidalis, Poly- sarcus denticauda, Poecilimon fussii, Saga pedo, Tettigonia caudata) are legally protected and two (Isophya costata, Paracaloptenus caloptenoides) strictly pro- tected in Hungary. Others (Aiolopus thalassinus, Chorthippus dichrous, Oedaleus decorus, Pachytrachis gracilis, Pezotettix giornae, Platycleis affinis, Rhacocleis germanica, Ruspolia nitidula, Tessellana veyseli) are zoogeographically also valuable here, near their northern-northwestern areal limit. Zusammenfassung Der Orthopteren-Fauna der nördlichen Mittelgebirge Ungarns ist ziemlich gut er- forscht, aber die Hügellandschaft Cserhát, in den westlichen Teil der Nördlichen Mittelgebirge, bildete bisher eine Ausnahme. Basierend auf unsere Untersuchun- gen, durchgeführt zwischen 1963 und 2011, hat sich die Artenzahl hier auf 67 erhöht (= 53% der Orthopteren-Arten Ungarns). -

Deutschen Gesellschaft für Orthopterologie e.V.; download http://www.dgfo-articulata.de/ ARTICULATA 2007 22 (1): 47–51 FAUNISTIK First sightings of Ruspolia nitidula (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) and Mecostethus parapleurus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) after fifty years in the Czech Republic Jaroslav Holuãa, Petr Koþárek & Pavel Marhoul Abstract Ruspolia nitidula (Scopoli, 1786) and Mecostethus parapleurus (Hagenbach, 1822) are species with similar requirements – both are hygrophilous and prefer mainly wet lowland meadows (K2ýÁREK et al. 2005). Besides that, they are ter- mophilous. In the Czech Republic they occurred at the margin of their ranges and became extinct in the 1950s (HOLUâA & K2ýÁREK 2005). Now, after fifty years, these species appeared in southern Moravia lowlands. The probable reason for the current range expansion to the north are the global warming in the last de- cades. Zusammenfassung Nach über fünfzig Jahren wurden Ruspolia nitidula (Scopoli, 1786) und Meco- stethus parapleurus (Hagenbach, 1822) im Jahr 2006 erstmals wieder in Tsche- chien nachgewiesen. Der Hauptgrund für die Wiederbesiedlung des Südostens Tschechiens dürfte die Klimaerwärmung der zurückliegenden Jahrzehnte sein. Ruspolia nitidula (Scopoli, 1786) R. nitidula is a stenotopic hygrophilous species living on swampy meadows and the edges of cut-off canals and is distributed in northern Africa, southern Europe and Palearctic Asia (K2ýÁREK et al. 2005). In the Czech Republic, only M$ěAN (1965) reported the occurrence of this species for PouzdĜany and VČstonice (Fig. 1). Since that time, no other occurrence has been recorded, despite the fact that the suitable habitats are still common in this territory (Phragmites stands). CHLÁDEK (1995) considered this species endangered due to the long absence of any records, and we also consider it critically endangered in our current red-list (HOLUâA & K2ýÁREK 2005). -

In Italy, amongst flooded meadows, one special type called “marcita” is strongly threatened. It is a stable flooded grassland used to produce green forage even during winter months due to the thermal properties of water coming from springs and fountains that prevent the soil from freezing. To date, some research has been carried out to investigate the role of the marcita for ornithological and herpetological communities. However, no comprehensive data on invertebrates inhabiting this particular biotope available. The aim of this study was to characterise the terrestrial entomological community of these typical winter-flooded meadows in northern Italy and, in particular, in six marcita fields located in the Ticino Valley Regional Park. -
