Notes for JULIUS HARVEY FERNEY: Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1948 > November > 14, page 2 Julius Ferney In Far North Julius Ferney, formerly of Walla Walla has gone far both in mileage and experience since he started work as a linotypist for the Walla Walla Union shortly before it combined with the Bulletin in 1934. Ferney, son of Jesse Ferney who operates an old book store on West Main street attended Walla Walla high school. He now runs a tri-weekly paper at Sitka, . When not playing in the school band here, he would be in his father's printing shop absorbing the fragrance of ink, and learning about the typesetting machines and presses. Between time spent in this town and his Alaskan venture started last spring, Ferney worked for the Oregonian for a short period and then for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Prior to taking over the Sitka Sentinel, he ran a neighborhood weekly at Richland Beach near Everett. Ferney finds everywhere he goes that people consider the same sort of news interesting. Copies of the Sentinel, sent to the elder Ferney, show that Alaskans like to follow the world series, electioneering, scores of local team games, and the fishing and lumbering industries which help to support the town. The as show that people of Alaska think of traveling primarily in terms of boats and planes. They also follow reports of hunters getting lost. A nine foot Christmas tree, properly trimmed, and a turkey dinner -- as well as Christmas presents -- brought December 25 to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John McKnight on Sunday. Why? Because Mrs. McKnight's brother, Edward Gwinn, A3-c, had just arrived home from Korea. He had expected to be back in Walla Walla in time for Christmas so his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gwinn of Clyde, and other family members hadn't sent his presents to him. . . And they felt, anyway, he was entitled to a Christmas at home . . . Thirty-seven friends and relatives were around the tree, among them Airman Gwinn's grandmother, Mrs. Mary Gwinn of Walla Walla; his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Hulburt of Eureka, who took lots of homemade Christmas candy; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reed and their children of Spokane, and O. S. Nelson of Pasco. . . Unable to be present was Airman Gwinn's other sister, Mrs. Carlyle Mcknight (the Gwinn sisters married brothers) of Portland. But she called to wish him Merry Christmas. . . He'll be reporting back soon to Parks Air Force Base in California. *********** Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1965 > December > 23, page 2 FROM NEAR, FAR. . . Mr. and Mrs. John McKnight, 1479 S. 2nd, have all their family home for Christmas. Mrs. McKnight's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gwinn, who spend their winters in California, drove up with the McKnights' daughter, Sharon, employed with the Hartford Insurance Co., in San Francisco. She has but a brief time so they'll be returning South Sunday, but even this will be more pleasurable than last Christmas when she was unable to come home at all. . . The Gwinns are spending most of their time in Concord, Calif. . . Bill McKnight, freshman at Pacific University, Forest Grove, Ore., is also home for the holidays and rounding out the family circle is Svein Havag, Norwegian exchange student at Wa-Hi, who lives with the McKnghts and is a fellow senior with their son, Scott, at the local school. . . This Christmas season has also brought special joy to the McKnights in a card of greeting from the Nigerian student who was with them one summer, first word they'd had in some time. He's now Dr. Magnus Adelie, having completed work and received his doctorate in comparative education at the University of Ottawa. Now he's at the University of Nigeria. . . His student days in this area were spent at WSU. ************** Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1966 > December > 22, page 5 HOME FOR CHRISTMAS . . . 40. HAZEL MARGARET 4 BROXSON (JAMES ALBERT 3, SEWELL 2, WILLIAM ALLEN 1) was born Feb 1893 in Oregon, and died 03 Oct 1971 in Walla Walla, WA 272 . She married ELMER RAYMOND DAVIS, son of JOHN DAVIS and CAROLINE SNOODY. He was born 19 Oct 1893 in Milton,Umatilla, OR, and died 25 Aug 1974 in Walla Walla, WA 273,274 . More About HAZEL MARGARET BROXSON: Census 1: 1900, OR Umatilla Milton ED 114 Pg 25(See Father) Census 2: 1920, OR Umatilla Precinct 1 ED 146 Pg 3(See Husband) Notes for ELMER RAYMOND DAVIS: Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1968 > August > 4 Pg 29 Personality Provile 90-Year Home Still is 'Home' by Claude Gray The last surviving memeber of the family that founded the Davis-Kaser Co., pioneer Walla Walla furniture store, is elmer Davis who lives with mrs. Davis on the Cottonwood Road just across the state line in Oregon. he is the last of the 14 children of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Davis, who came to Walla Walla in 1863 crossing the plains via ox team from Iowa. Teh Davises reside in a two story 14-room residence that was built 90 years ago. Lumber for the house was shipped from Portland to Wallula via steamer then brought overland by John Davis who hauled wheat there one day, returning with lumber the next. The house has been remodeled several times by its present occupants. Elmer Davis was born in the house, just a few feet from where he was seated while interviewed. own Names Used John Davis and Fred W. Kaser, who had married Laura Davis, daughter of Davis, became engaged in business in a second hand store near today's Palouse and Main intersection. That enterprise became so successful it developed into the furniture business the two men gave their own names: Davis-Kaser. That business was established about 1894. Their expansion resulted in moving to the Odd Fellows building on West Alder which was occupied in the early 1900's. The store remained there until Tom Perry, its owner- manager, moved it to the current location at 51 East Main. The family enterprise was one of the first furniture stores in Walla Walla and attracted trade from a wide area. With the expansion of the buiness numberous additional departments were added. After the death of Davis and Kaser the late Jimmy Jones took over management of the store. Elmer Davis worked at the store while attending business college here and during summers and school vacations during his early youth. He took over management of the family's Cottonwood Creek land holdings when he was 17 years old, succeeding the late W. P. Reser, his brother-in-law, who had managed the family farm in earlier years after the death of John Davis in 1907. Reser had married Lindy Davis, an older sister of Elmer's. Other Davis daughters whose husbands became well known here included Gertrude who married Ray Reser and Clara who married Harlan Miller. On Mill Creek Mr. and Mrs. John Davis homesteaded on Mill Creek after their arrival here in 1863 purchasing 500 acres of land that now makes up the bulk of the family holdings on the Cottonwood in 1880. Since then Elmer Davis has extended the farm to its present 700 or more acres. He farmed it 46 years but now leases it to F. J. Stubblefield who raises green peas and wheat there. The Davis' land on Mill Creek is now included in the Ed Lyons family holdings. Crossing the plains in 1863 with Mr. and Mrs. Davis were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shelton, parents of Orley Shelton, 328 S. . Elmer Davis attended the old Tanksley and Cottonwood schools in the vicinity of the family home. The former occupied the highway corner on which Mr. and Mrs. Paul Garland's home stands. Later attended Green Park Grade school in Walla Walla during a year in which the family resided on Boyer Avenue. One year in town was enough and the family returned to the farm home. Davis attended Pearson's Academy two years then enrolled in Walla Walla Business College from which he graduated. Two Children He married Hazel Broxson of Milton-Freewater Dec 9, 1913. They have two children: Paul Davis, who operates a large garage in Colorado Springs, Colo., and a daughter, Mrs. A. F. "Mary Lou" Johnson, Coos Bay, Ore. There are three grandchildren. "Farming definitely is a gamble," Davis said. " You're never sure whether you'll have a successful year or not. We've had some good and some bad years, probably more of the former, but I remember selling wheat for 20 1/2 cents a bushel during the depression." John Davis secured a water right on the Cottonwood during the Japanese--Russian war having a four-inch supply line put in from farther up the stream that supplied water both for domestic and general purposes. Later Elmer Davis had a 160-foot well drilled that has supplied the farm's domestic needs ever since. Water for irrigating the extensive yard of the Davises comes from the Cottonwood that never runs dry that far up in the foothills. Davis' only hobby is irrigating and mowing his yard's grass and caring for the shrubs that have been planted as well as an extensive garden. Birthdates of the John A. This would clear up 24 hours after I left him. . . but it would recur even at the mention of his name."
