Mr. Ciiari.es II. Romnsox and Others ok the Labor Refokm Ward am. City Committee.

Iii RbntIiBMBN : — accepting ihe nomination of Mnyor, it is with a lull

sonso of how I inadequate am to perform the functions of that office. But as a representative of the principles and issues of the Labor Reform Party, a conviction of then importance as well as interest in their final success has governed me. A prominent issue of our Party is the establishment of Li- braries and Reading Rooms in every Ward of the City. The adoption of the Bight Hour System by the City Government which would be an important step towards making it a custom in society. Al1,1 while we do aot complain of the various improvements in the mat- tors of Street Pavomenta, etc, we demand that the City employ its Laborers but eight hours pi i day, as an experiment in behalf of the Workinpmen, be- causo we believe it to bo a great public good and must be initiated by the public or general consent, and being introduced by a City Ordinance is not open to the objection urged against State Legislation. Wo want better opportunities and more time for mental improvement sothal the "Dignity of Labor" may have a meaning as well as n place in the journalism of the day. We desire that those who produce all the com- forts shall of lift have a voice in their distribution and a share in their enjoyment. Wc need some better plan adopted by which the Producer and Consum- er may meet in the Market. For when the nominal rent of a stall in the market secures worth n privilege a .small fortune, the discussion of Free .Markets becomes a i essity, and the occasions for Soup Houses asubjeot of Si rums consideration.

We want some limit to the monopoly of the manufacture and supply of lias to the citizens of Boston. The subject of the Public Conveyances, whether by Kerry in or the streets, demands our attention and should be under the control ul the City Government. miserable The abodes of wretchedness and crime that nre a disgrace to nearlj every quarter of the city, should bo improved. These, and mans other changes that might be suggested, are amply sufficient to inaugurate n Party of Reform Gentlemen, thaokiug you for this expression of your confidence and esteem,

1 am, Respectfully Yours,

NATHANIEL E. CHASE. ;

M., after which time no name will be added to the Voting Lists, except as provided by Section 10, Chap. 376 of the Acts of 1374. —

Nov. 26, 1877.

Dear Mr. Hutchins : One of your friends came to me in your interest lately, and I suggested to him the impropriety of your retaining longer the Chair- manship of the Text Book Committee while Publisher of the Mis- sionary Herald, having, as it does, a patronage of $4,000, or more a year, or $40,000 in the last ten years, from school book publishers, and asked him whether it would not be better for you to refuse to be a candidate for re-election, or to be upon this committee if elect- ed. He did not wish to say anything about it, as it might involve

him in unpleasant relations ; so I think I will undertake the risk of saying it to you, as it seems to me you ought to know, if you do not, that there are many persons who think as I do in this matter; and that, sooner or later, it may become more public. Although you may not receive the full benefit of this patronage, whatever tends to increase the value of the Herald under your ad- ministration must, directly or indirectly, benefit you and be a con- stant menace to society.

The more above suspicion the man, the greater is the danger of the precedent. This much it seems to me I ought to say ; my per- sonal relations with you are such that it will give me pain to have your position publicly commented on. I have taken occasion to request nothing should be published at present, as I thought you might be induced to so act as would avoid any necessity for communi.

Sincerely Yours, Edwin Ginn. Please return answer by noon.

Brief Notes upon Mr. Edwin Ginn's Letter.

1. Mr. Edwin Ginn is at the head of the house of Ginn & Heath, 13 Tremont Place, Boston, Publishers of Sehool Books. 2. Why should my friends go for consultation to Mr. Ginn, who is believed to have worked very industriously and very " eonjiden- lially," during the past few weeks, as it is currently reported that he did two years ago, for my removal from the School Board ?

3. I am not, ami never have been, the Publisher of the Mission- ary Herald. I have no pecuniary interest in it, either in its sub- 7? "\rt7"et:rci T-wentyTliree,

OP THE COUNTY SENATORIAL UJVIOJVS.

The Senatorial tickets have been nominated upon the basis laid down in the following Preamble and Resolution, passed by the Free Soil Conventions, and accepted by the Democratic Conventions :

Wfiereas, Owing to the Constitutional mode in electing SENATORS in this Commonwealth, there have resulted great inequalities of representation— at the last session of the Legislature, a MAJORITY of more than 12,000 votes having FAILED TO RETURN A SINGLE MEMBER TO THE SENATE — and

Whereas, The Whig party, controlled and directed by the aionied interests of the Commonwealth, is enabled, under tho present system, though in a minori- ty, to wield the whole Executive and Legislative authority of the State, through the division which exists in the ranks of its opponents — and

Whereas, There happily exists at present a good degree of harmony in the views of the Democracy and Free Democracy in reference to MEASURES of state policy : — Therefore, and to the end of availing ourselves of tho just rights of majorities, and of remedying the burthensome inequalities of Representations, which threaten, under the present system, to become perpetual, — we do con- sent first declaring our purpose to preserve our own separate organiza- tion, and maintain the integrity of our principles — to act with the De- mocratic party in support of " good men and true " as candidates for tho Senate, who shall be selected by the two Conventions, as being tvorthy to pro- mote the common views and principles winch these Conventions represent.

The leading ideas of the on matters of State Policy, arc — to

prescribe some limits to the power of corporations ; to divide the State into proper Senatorial Districts ; and to secure to the people the secrecy of tho Ballot Box. The Democratic party entertain similar ideas. To realize them by legislation, as far as may be, both parties have united on Senatorial Tickets. tch governor SAMUEL LATHROl FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR .
