  • MDA International Film Fund Appoints Distribution Workshop As Its Sales Agent
News Release For Immediate Release MDA International Film Fund appoints Distribution Workshop as its sales agent Cannes, France. May 18, 2009 – Following the launch of its new International Film Fund (IFF) at the start of the Cannes Film Market, Singapore's Media Development Authority (MDA) today announced the appointment of Hong Kong's Distribution Workshop as the worldwide sales agent for the first batch of films produced under the IFF. "Since the announcement of our International Film Fund a few days ago, we have received a number of queries from potential partners around the world. We are delighted to partner Distribution Workshop, which brings on board the international sales expertise and network to introduce our upcoming IFF projects to audiences worldwide,“ said Dr Christopher Chia, MDA's Chief Executive Officer. “Distribution Workshop is extremely pleased to be working with MDA on their initiative in stepping up production in the international arena," said Nansun Shi, Chairman of Distribution Workshop. "We welcome this move which would incentivise more international involvement in making quality Asian films with mass appeal." Application for IFF is now open. The deadline of the first call of proposals is July 31, 2009. Applicants already associated with sales representation are welcome to apply, but must be open to negotiating territories with Distribution Workshop. Selected applicants will be required to pitch their projects to a committee comprising representatives from MDA and Distribution Workshop. Upon selection, the winning projects will have their own dedicated distribution executives involved from the onset of Page 1 of 2 pre-production. • Miramax's Asian Experiment: Creating a Model for Crossover Hits Lisa Dombrowski , Wesleyan University, US
Miramax's Asian Experiment: Creating a Model for Crossover Hits Lisa Dombrowski , Wesleyan University, US Prior to 1996, no commercial Chinese-language film had scored a breakout hit in the United States since the end of the 1970s kung fu craze. In the intervening period, the dominant distribution model for Asian films in America involved showcasing subtitled, auteur-driven art cinema in a handful of theaters in New York and Los Angeles, then building to ever more screens in a platform fashion, targeting college towns and urban theaters near affluent, older audiences. With the American fan base for Hong Kong action films steadily growing through video and specialized exhibition during the 1980s, Miramax chieftain Harvey Weinstein recognized the opportunity to market more commercial Chinese-language films to a wider audience outside the art cinema model as a means of generating crossover hits. Beginning in 1995, Weinstein positioned Miramax to become the primary distributor of Hong Kong action films in the United States. Miramax's acquisition and distribution strategy for Hong Kong action films was grounded in a specific set of assumptions regarding how to appeal to mass-market American tastes. The company targeted action-oriented films featuring recognizable genre conventions and brand- name stars, considering such titles both favorites of hardcore Hong Kong film fans and accessible enough to attract new viewers. Rather than booking its Hong Kong theatrical acquisitions into art cinemas, Miramax favored wide releases to multiplexes accompanied by marketing campaigns designed to highlight the action and hide the "foreignness" of the films. Miramax initially adopted a strategy of dubbing, re-scoring, re-editing, and often re-titling its Hong Kong theatrical and video/DVD releases in order to make them more appealing to mainstream American audiences.

VHD Index - 02 9/29/04 4:43 PM Page 715 Alternative Titles Index While it's true that we couldn't include every Asian cult flick in this slim little vol- ume—heck, there's dozens being dug out of vaults and slapped onto video as you read this—the one you're looking for just might be in here under a title you didn't know about. Most of these films have been released under more than one title, and while we've done our best to use the one that's most likely to be familiar, that doesn't guarantee you aren't trying to find Crippled Avengers and don't know we've got it as The Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms. And so, we've gathered as many alternative titles as we can find, including their original language title(s), and arranged them in alphabetical order in this index to help you out. Remember, English language articles ("a", "an", "the") are ignored in the sort, but foreign articles are NOT ignored. Hey, my Japanese is a little rusty, and some languages just don't have articles. • Making Movies and Making Physics
Published in Arts: A Science Matter, eds. Burguete, Maria & Lam, Lui (World Scientific, Singapore, 2011) pp. 204-221. 10 Making Movies and Making Physics Hark Tsui and Lui Lam The characteristics and experiences of making movies and making physics are discussed, respectively, by a movie director/producer and a physicist. Similari- ties and differences between the making of movies and the making of physics are presented. Discussions on the nature of movies and physics, on creativity and innovation as well as on the joy of making movies and making physics are provided. 10.1 Introduction Making movies is a creative process that involves several operational stages: (1) conception of the project, (2) lining up the funding, (3) finding coworkers, (4) shooting the movie, (5) post-shooting work, and (6) marketing and distributing the movie. Making physics means creating new physics—doing physics, or physics research, at its best. It is also a creative process and, like making movies, involves the same six stages in its operation, from the beginning to finish. The exception is that when doing pure theory or simple experiments, stages (2) and (3) may be absent. Hark Tsui has been directing and producing movies since 1979 [Ho & Ho, 2002; Morton, 2001] and Lui Lam published his first physics paper in 1968 [McMillan et al, 1968]. Presently, Tsui has directed/ produced over 70 movies and Lam has published over 170 research papers and 12 books. The two knew each other since 1975 when both 204 10 Making Movies and Making Physics 205 were doing community work in the New York Chinatown, in lower Manhattan.
