MDA International Film Fund Appoints Distribution Workshop As Its Sales Agent
News Release For Immediate Release MDA International Film Fund appoints Distribution Workshop as its sales agent Cannes, France. May 18, 2009 – Following the launch of its new International Film Fund (IFF) at the start of the Cannes Film Market, Singapore's Media Development Authority (MDA) today announced the appointment of Hong Kong's Distribution Workshop as the worldwide sales agent for the first batch of films produced under the IFF. "Since the announcement of our International Film Fund a few days ago, we have received a number of queries from potential partners around the world. We are delighted to partner Distribution Workshop, which brings on board the international sales expertise and network to introduce our upcoming IFF projects to audiences worldwide,“ said Dr Christopher Chia, MDA's Chief Executive Officer. “Distribution Workshop is extremely pleased to be working with MDA on their initiative in stepping up production in the international arena," said Nansun Shi, Chairman of Distribution Workshop. "We welcome this move which would incentivise more international involvement in making quality Asian films with mass appeal." Application for IFF is now open. The deadline of the first call of proposals is July 31, 2009. Applicants already associated with sales representation are welcome to apply, but must be open to negotiating territories with Distribution Workshop. Selected applicants will be required to pitch their projects to a committee comprising representatives from MDA and Distribution Workshop. Upon selection, the winning projects will have their own dedicated distribution executives involved from the onset of Page 1 of 2 pre-production. After completion, the films will be distributed to the worldwide marketplace by Distribution Workshop. -

I was born in Taceva, a small town in the Carpathian mountains, in an area which was at that time part of Czechoslovakia, on the border of Romania and about a hundred kilometers from Poland. That was in 1930, and the town then had a population of about ten thousand people, a small town, but fairly advanced. -

Miramax's Asian Experiment: Creating a Model for Crossover Hits Lisa Dombrowski , Wesleyan University, US Prior to 1996, no commercial Chinese-language film had scored a breakout hit in the United States since the end of the 1970s kung fu craze. In the intervening period, the dominant distribution model for Asian films in America involved showcasing subtitled, auteur-driven art cinema in a handful of theaters in New York and Los Angeles, then building to ever more screens in a platform fashion, targeting college towns and urban theaters near affluent, older audiences. With the American fan base for Hong Kong action films steadily growing through video and specialized exhibition during the 1980s, Miramax chieftain Harvey Weinstein recognized the opportunity to market more commercial Chinese-language films to a wider audience outside the art cinema model as a means of generating crossover hits. Beginning in 1995, Weinstein positioned Miramax to become the primary distributor of Hong Kong action films in the United States. Miramax's acquisition and distribution strategy for Hong Kong action films was grounded in a specific set of assumptions regarding how to appeal to mass-market American tastes. The company targeted action-oriented films featuring recognizable genre conventions and brand- name stars, considering such titles both favorites of hardcore Hong Kong film fans and accessible enough to attract new viewers. Rather than booking its Hong Kong theatrical acquisitions into art cinemas, Miramax favored wide releases to multiplexes accompanied by marketing campaigns designed to highlight the action and hide the "foreignness" of the films. Miramax initially adopted a strategy of dubbing, re-scoring, re-editing, and often re-titling its Hong Kong theatrical and video/DVD releases in order to make them more appealing to mainstream American audiences. -

Media Asia Film Production Limited All Rights Reserved 1 rd The 73 Cannes Official Selection Septet: The Story of Hong Kong《七人樂隊》 An omnibus film presented by Media Asia and China Film Media, a production of Milkyway Image, Septet: The Story of Hong Kong has been selected for the official lineup of the 73rd Cannes Film Festival. The film is composed of seven short films in honor of Hong Kong by seven of the city’s most revered directors - Tsui Hark, Ann Hui, Sammo Hung, Patrick Tam, Yuen Wo Ping, Ringo Lam, and Johnnie To, who produced the film and directed one of the seven segments. It is another Johnnie To’s film selected by Cannes Film Festival after Breaking News, Election, Triangle, Vengeance and Blind Detective. It all began with an idea by Johnnie To: despite their renowned international repute and countless accolades under their belts, many Hong Kong directors of his generation still share the same passion for filmmaking and an unwavering love for their city. Johnnie To rallied his like-minded director friends Sammo Hung, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Yuen Wo Ping, Ringo Lam, and Tsui Hark to make a movie about Hong Kong. It would be shot on film as a tribute to the bygone era of filmmaking, and the stories would span from the 50s to the future. Each director shot a short movie around 10 minutes each for their allotted decade. Each segment would be a special melody imprinted with the director’s feelings for Hong Kong. Seven of Hong Kong’s most revered directors with distinctly unique styles come together for the first time to compose a symphony of stories for their city. -

1 Yesterday Once More: Hong Kong-China Coproductions and the Myth of Mainlandization Gary Bettinson, Lancaster University [email protected] Abstract: Since Ackbar Abbas theorized Hong Kong as a space of cultural ‘disappearance’ in the mid-1990s, critics have debated the extent to which local cultural forms have continued to recede, particularly as a corollary of Hong Kong’s increasing subjection to mainlandization. For several critics, the region’s cinema has already vanished from view, only to re-emerge in a brand new, distinctly Sinicized guise – that of ‘post-Hong Kong cinema,’ a mode of predominantly coproduced filmmaking that effaces traditional Hong Kong aesthetics and routines of film practice. So thoroughly has Hong Kong cinema been subsumed to China that its once ‘unique’ and ‘singular’ identity is no longer discernible. The shackles of PRC censorship now stifle free expression; Hong Kong’s classic genres have become obsolete; and the PRC’s vogue for ‘main melody’ films and the dapian (‘big film’) has straitened Hong Kong cinema’s range of storytelling options. Today, critics contend, Hong Kong filmmakers are severely constrained by Mainland bureaucracy and the exigencies of the China market. This article seeks to challenge these assumptions, contesting a set of apparent truisms concerning Mainland censorship, Hong Kong-China coproductions, and the dissipation or disappearance of Hong Kong’s local cinema and identity. The theory of mainlandization, I submit, denies the durability of Hong Kong’s standardized craft practices; its aesthetic traditions; and the facile ingenuity of its filmmakers.
