In the beginning there was the sound, and they all knew what that sound sounded like.... [T]he voices of women searched for the right combination, the key, the code, the sound that broke the back of words. Building voice upon voice upon voice until they found it, and when they did it was a wave of sound wide enough to sound deep water and knock the pods off chestnut trees. It broke over Sethe and she trembled like the baptized in its wash. (259-61)3 This passage points to the significance of music, not only in the context of Beloved, but also with regard to the predicament of the black diaspora at large. The assertion "In the beginning there were no words. In the beginning there was the sound, and they all knew what that sound sounded like," in an ironic subversion of John 1.1, declares the continuity of musical expression in the African American world. The passage refers less to metaphysical implications than to historical conditions, simply putting forth that the—English—word is much younger than the sound pat- terns of music that originated in African culture. As forms of expression handed down by generations and firmly rooted in the black community, these sounds offer an expressive potential that enables individuals to appropriate the English language and transform it according to their needs: It is the "sound that [breaks] the back of words," and it is in the sound specifically that the self-assured use of language giving voice to formerly unspeakable occurrences becomes possible. The music of John Coltrane’s last group—his 1965-67 quintet—has been misrepresented, ignored and reviled by critics, scholars and fans, primarily because it is a music built on a fundamental and very audible disunity that renders a new kind of structural unity. Many of those who study Coltrane’s music have thus far attempted to approach all elements in his last works comparatively, using harmonic and melodic models as is customary regarding more conventional jazz structures. This approach is incomplete and misleading, given the music’s conceptual underpinnings. The present study is meant to provide an analytical model with which listeners and scholars might come to terms with this music’s more radical elements. I use Coltrane’s own observations concerning his final music, Jonathan Kramer’s temporal perception theory, and Evan Parker’s perspectives on atomism and laminarity in mid 1960s British improvised music to analyze and contextualize the symbiotically related temporal disunity and resultant structural unity that typify Coltrane’s 1965-67 works.

Born on September 23, 1920, in Hamlet, North Carolina, Coltrane followed in the foot steps of his father who played several instruments. He learned music at an early age, influenced by Lester Young and Johnny Hodges and others which led him to shi to the alto saxophone. He connued his musical training in Philadelphia and was called to military service during World War II, where he performed in the U.S. Navy Band. Aer the war, Coltrane connued his zest for music, playing the tenor saxophone with the Eddie Vinson Band, performing with Jimmy Heath. He later joined the Dizzy Gillespie Band. His passion for experimentaon was be- ginning to take shape; however, it was his work with the Miles Davis Quintet in 1958 that would lead to his own musical evoluon. He was impressed with the freedom given to him by Miles Davis' music and was quoted as say- ing "Miles' music gave me plenty of freedom." This freedom led him to form his own band. By 1960, Coltrane had formed his own quartet, which included pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison. He eventually added other players including Eric Dolphy and Pharaoh Sanders. The John Coltrane Quartet, a novelty group, created some of the most innovave and expressive music in jazz histo- ry, including hit albums: "My Favorite Things," "Africa Brass," "Impressions," and his most famous piece, "A Love Supreme." "A Love Supreme," composed in his home on Candlewood Path, not only effected posive change in North America, but helped to change people's percepon of African Americans throughout the world.

I am the sign of the letter and the designation of the division.” (“The Thunder, Perfect Mind”, The Nag Hammadi) “The persona of the novel is mysterious, and it is not always apparent whether it is the narrator/ persona talking or remembering events, or whether it is one of the characters.” (Ward Welty 226) Jazz is told by contradictory, multiple narrative voices. Instead of giving the reader one omniscient narrator, Toni Morrison chooses to use two narrators: One gossipy, overtly hostile voice which presents itself as omniscient; admitting only towards the end of the text to have based all of its’ conclusions on what it can observe (Jazz 220-1); And another narrative voice which often follows closely on the heels of the first, makes no claims to complete knowledge, involves no insults to the characters, yet is involved in framing most of their conversations, thoughts and feelings. Both the open ‘flourish’ of the first narrator on the one hand, and the “complicated and inaccessible” insights of the second narrator, on the other hand, concurrently comprise the jazz music of Jazz (1). To create an omniscient narrator who is both first-person and third-person omniscient is jazz-like because this combination “symbolize an incredible kind of improvisation” (Micucci 275). We can say that Morrison draws upon jazz music as “the structuring principle” for Jazz.

In a 1961 interview with Kitty Grime, Coltrane said, “I don’t have to plan so much as I learn and get freer. Sometimes we start from nothing. I know how it’s going to end—but sometimes not what might happen in between. I’m studying and learning about longer constructions. If I become strong enough, I might try something on those lines.” “A Love Supreme” is his best known effort along those lines. Recorded December 9, 1964, the album clearly was important to Coltrane. It’s the only one for which he wrote the liner notes and a poem. Coltrane had come to see his music as an extension of his religious beliefs. But one doesn’t have to be religious to find Coltrane’s expression profoundly moving and important. His ‘60s music, though mostly improvised, is tightly structured despite those who consider it an undisciplined, formless expression of emotion. The structure of “A Love Supreme” suite, for example, is not simply abstract but is partly determined by his religious message. The four sections—“Acknowledgement,” “Resolution,” “Pursuance,” and “Psalms”—recreate Coltrane’s own progress as he first learned to acknowledge the divine, resolved to pursue it, searched and eventually celebrated in song what he attained.     Social and Cultural Alienation in Toni Morrison’s Tar Baby Lina Hsu National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences I. Introduction As one of the most important contemporary American writers, Toni Morrison has published nine novels. Tar Baby, her fourth novel, has received the least attention among her early novels. It is “the least admired, least researched, and least taught” (Pereira 72). The reason may be two-folded: First, the novel does not focus exclusively on African-American people’s experience. Unlike other works by Morrison, Tar Baby contains much description of a white family. Although the black young man and woman, Son and Jadine, are recognized as the major characters of the book, Morrison explores the experience of the retired white man, Valerian, his wife, and his son with the same deliberation. For critics seeking the purely “black style” to prove Morrison’s originality, a novel with much attention on white people’s life does not seem to be a likely choice. Secondly, Tar Baby has received little critical attention because it is called the “most problematic and unresolved novel” among Morrison’s works (Peterson 471). Morrison’s writing does not merely disclose African-American people’s suffering and struggle. Most importantly, it points out the significance of cultural identification as a way to achieve self-identity. The Bluest Eyes embodies the devastating effect of denying one’s ethnic features. Sula applauds an African-American girl’s pursuit of the self. Son of Solomon celebrates a black male’s quest of his own culture. Beloved, the most widely discussed novel, indicates the way to healing from the traumatic past in the form of traditional culture.

In fact, my thesis illustrates how progressive traditions for social justice in Black music have acted as a source of agency and a tool for resistance against oppression. This study also explains how the music of African Americans has served as a primary mechanism for disseminating their cultural legacy. I have selected four Black artists who exhibit the aforementioned principles in their musical production. Bernice Johnson Reagon, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron comprise the talented cadre of musicians that exemplify the progressive Black musical tradition for social justice in their respective genres of gospel, jazz, soul and spoken word. The methods utilized for my study include a socio-historical account of the origins of Black music, an overview of the artists’ careers, and a lyrical analysis of selected songs created by each of the artists. This study will contribute to the body of literature surrounding the progressive roles, functions and utilities of African American music.   • John Coltrane – a Love Supreme
    "The musical and spiritual legacies of John Coltrane are some of the most powerful and significant in the history of American and global music." Brown, Leonard L. (2010) John Coltrane & Black America's Quest for Freedom, New York: OUP, p7. Why is A Love Supreme such a culturally important album? The emergence of Jazz can be seen as a direct sonic response to the African Diaspora, life under slavery and the racist laws of American society. Emmett G. Price III (Brown, 2010, p. 172) cites James H. Cone who sums it up with: Whatever form black music takes, it’s always an expression of black life…and what people must do to survive with a measure of dignity in a society which seems bent on destroying their right to be human beings. The fact that we black people keep making music means that we as people refuse to be destroyed. We refuse to allow the people who oppress us to have the last word about our humanity. The foundation of cultural and artistic expression that unifies the African American experience is, as Price (Brown, 2010, p. 154) explains, its spiritual ethos.
