  • A Short History Regarding the Taxonomy and Systematic Researches of Platygastroidea (Hymenoptera)
Memoirs of the Scientific Sections of the Romanian Academy Tome XXXIV, 2011 BIOLOGY A SHORT HISTORY REGARDING THE TAXONOMY AND SYSTEMATIC RESEARCHES OF PLATYGASTROIDEA (HYMENOPTERA) O.A. POPOVICI1 and P.N. BUHL2 1 “Al.I.Cuza” University, Faculty of Biology, Bd. Carol I, nr. 11, 700506, Iasi, Romania. 2 Troldhøjvej 3, DK-3310 Ølsted, Denmark, e-mail: [email protected],dk Corresponding author: [email protected] This paper presents an overview of the most important and best-known works that were the subject of taxonomy or systematics Platygastroidea superfamily. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part of the research surprised the early period can be placed throughout the XIXth century between Latreille and Dalla Torre. Before this period, references about platygastrids and scelionids were made by Linnaeus and Schrank, they are the ones who described the first platygastrid and scelionid respectively. In this the first period work entomologists as: Haliday, Westwood, Walker, Forster, Ashmead, Thomson, Howard, etc., the result of their work being the description of 699 scelionids species which are found quoted in Dalla Torre's catalogue. The second part of the paper is devoted to early 20th century. This vibrant work is marked by the work of two great entomologists: Kieffer and Dodd. In this period one publish the first and only global monograph of platygastrids and scelionids until now. In this monograph are twice the number of species than in Dalla Torre's catalogue which shows the magnitude of the systematic research of those moments. The third part of the paper refers to the late 20th and early 21st century.

  • Chapter 12. Biocontrol Arthropods: New Denizens of Canada's
291 Chapter 12 Biocontrol Arthropods: New Denizens of Canada’s Grassland Agroecosystems Rosemarie De Clerck-Floate and Héctor Cárcamo Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lethbridge Research Centre 5403 - 1 Avenue South, P.O. Box 3000 Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada T1J 4B1 Abstract. Canada’s grassland ecosystems have undergone major changes since the arrival of European agriculture, ranging from near-complete replacement of native biodiversity with annual crops to the effects of overgrazing by cattle on remnant native grasslands. The majority of the “agroecosystems” that have replaced the historical native grasslands now encompass completely new associations of plants and arthropods in what is typically a mix of introduced and native species. Some of these species are pests of crops and pastures and were accidentally introduced. Other species are natural enemies of these pests and were deliberately introduced as classical biological control (biocontrol) agents to control these pests. To control weeds, 76 arthropod species have been released against 24 target species in Canada since 1951, all of which also have been released in western Canada. Of these released species, 53 (70%) have become established, with 18 estimated to be reducing target weed populations. The biocontrol programs for leafy spurge in the prairie provinces and knapweeds in British Columbia have been the largest, each responsible for the establishment of 10 new arthropod species on rangelands. This chapter summarizes the ecological highlights of these programs and those for miscellaneous weeds. Compared with weed biocontrol on rangelands, classical biocontrol of arthropod crop pests by using arthropods lags far behind, mostly because of a preference to manage crop pests with chemicals.

According to their abundance, M. penetrans, samples were collected in several fields in Belgium in E. error and P. tuberosula appeared as the main 2012–2014 in order to characterize the parasitism rates parasitoids of S. mosellana in Belgium. For the two and parasitoid complexes in overwintering larvae. The other wheat midges, only one species of the family parasitism rates varied greatly between the sampled Platygastridae was found for each midge: Platygaster fields: 3–100, 0–100 and 2% for S. mosellana, H. equestris (Spittler) for H.

Lindane and its related isomers, alpha- and beta-HCH, have been recommended for listing under the Stockholm Convention by the POPs Review Committee (POPRC). Lindane, alpha-HCH, and beta-HCH should be included under provisions of Annex A of the Convention. Although lindane is the only HCH isomer that exhibits insecticidal properties, for every ton of lindane that is manufactured, approximately nine tons of toxic and persistent mixed-isomer HCH wastes are produced.1 From 2 to 4.8 million tons of HCH wastes remain worldwide from lindane production.2 These stockpiles have been poorly managed in many countries, creating hazardous waste sites that contaminate local water sources, habitats, and communities. In addition, these wastes become a source of long-range contamination to remote Arctic ecosystems where HCH isomers are among the most prevalent and persistent contaminants. Lindane (gamma-HCH) is banned for use in at least 52 countries, restricted or severely restricted in 33 countries, not registered in 10 countries, and registered in 17 countries.3 The properties of persistence, bioaccumulation, and long-range transport for lindane are well-recognized and the substance is known to have adverse human and ecological health effects.

In the Peace River region of Alberta, little is known about this pest and its natural enemies. Impacts of crop type and canopy structure on assemblages of carabid beetles and, in turn, their impact on wheat midge populations were assessed in a field plot trial.
