JUNE THANKFULLY WINDING DOWN--No team can be more excited than the Royals that a new month is just days away, as yesterday was just Kansas City’s fourth win in 22 tries since the calendar flipped over to June...runs have almost been as scarce as wins this month, as the Royals have plated five runs in their last three wins, posting victories of 2-0, 1-0 and 2-0...Kansas City has scored a Major League-low 47 runs for a 2.1 per game average in June, 27 fewer runs than any other big league club...the Royals have batted only .191 as a unit (136-for-711), the only squad in the Majors hitting below .200 this month...the Royals have eclipsed the double-digit hit mark only once in June with a dozen in a June 4 loss in Anaheim...KC is in need of at least three wins over the remaining four games to avoid posting the worst June in team history...the 1970 club went 7-19 for the lowest win total for a full month of June play...the 1981 Royals went 5-5 in June, but the month was cut short due to a work stoppage. OMAHA IN KC’S FUTURE--Commissioner Rob Manfred was in Omaha last Thursday to announce that the Royals and will play a regular season game in TD Ameritrade Park next June 13 to celebrate the start of the 2019 College World Series...the announcement made in conjunction with the NCAA, was attended by Royals General Manager Dayton Moore, his counterpart with the Tigers, Al Avila, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, the President/CEO of the Gary Green and was emceed by ESPN’s Karl Ravech...the game will be the completion of a three-game home series for the Royals where the June 11-12 games will be played in Kauffman Stadium before taking the finale to Omaha...ESPN will televise the prime-time contest nationally. WHERE’S WHIT???--Kansas City utility man extraordinaire Whit Merrifield returned to the familiar surroundings of second base yesterday vs. the Angels...in his third big league season, Merrifield’s name is likely to be somewhere near the top of the batting order when healthy, but where he’ll play on a given day could be virtually anywhere on the diamond...since June 1 alone, he has started at second base (9 games), in center field (5 times), right field (3 times), at first base (twice) and as the DH (twice)...on the year, he’s played four different defensive positions, including his normal location of second base (50 games), center field (10 games), first base (5 games) and right field (8 games)...he has played left field and third base in previous seasons, while also DH’ing five times this year. BREAKS IN THE SCHEDULE--The Royals are in the final week of a stretch in which they’ll play 14 games in 18 days after a busy stretch of 23 games in 24 days... KC had last Thursday off, using the evening hours to travel to Houston, then the final day off in this stretch is in Seattle on Thursday...the Royals initially had five days off in June on the original schedule, but had to employ yesterday to make-up a snowed out contest in April vs. the Angels...KC will also get some down time in July, with off days slated for Thursday, July 5 at home and Thursday, July 12 in Chicago, followed the next week by the four-day All-Star break...the Royals also have Monday, July 30 off, also in Chicago.
