Verrett gave up four runs in the fifth inning Tuesday at Citi Field, including a three-run homer to Hector Olivera, dropping the Mets to a 6-2 loss to the Braves. Combined with Washington's loss to the Orioles, which lowered the Mets' magic number to six, the defeat kept their National League East lead at 6.5 games with 11 to play. The Mets are a half-game back of the Dodgers in the race for home-field advantage in their potential NL Division Series matchup, after the D-backs defeated Los Angeles on Tuesday, 8-0. "For me, it looks like we're tight," manager Terry Collins said. "I don't know why. It's just the perception it looks like from the bench." "I don't think we're tight," third baseman David Wright said. "There's just going to be some games where we get outplayed, and tonight was one of them." Subbing for deGrom, whom the Mets pushed back in their rotation to lighten his workload, Verrett held the Braves scoreless until Jace Peterson homered to start the fifth. Five batters later, Olivera added a three-run shot to spoil Verrett's day.

The Cubs were managed by David Ross, the Cubs' first-year manager, and played their home games at Wrigley Field as a member of the National Baseball League's Central Division. The Cubs opened the season July 24 against the Milwaukee Brewers and finished the season on the road against the Chicago White Sox. The Cubs clinch a playoff berth on September 22, 2020, when the Philadelphia Phillies were swept by a doubleheader. It was the Cubs' fifth playoff appearance in six years. Four days later, they won the National League Central Division title for the first time since 2017. They finished the regular season 34-26 to win the division in three games. They got the No.3 seed in the newly expanded playoffs. However, they were swept away in the Miami Marlins Wild Card series. The season was shortened to a 60- game schedule due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The previous season the Cubs finished the 2019 season 84-78 to finish in third place in the Central Division.

This was the first game of a seven-game stretch against the rebuilding Braves and Phillies for the Nationals, a schedule that gives them the opportunity to get off to a fast start to the season. "That's big, you can either get off to a good start or get off to a terrible start," Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. "You need to win those games, this is the epitome of games you win in April you don't have to win in August or September." The Nationals overcame a rocky outing from Max Scherzer, whom the Braves were on from the start, beginning with a two-run double from A.J. Pierzynski in the first. Scherzer battled through six innings, surrendering four runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. "They put some good at-bats against me in the first couple innings," Scherzer said. "I just couldn't find a pitch to get out of the jam there with runners on base. Sometimes you got to tip your hat to your opponents, and that was the situation." The Nationals answered the Braves' two-run first with three runs in the bottom of the inning, punctuated by a two-run homer by Murphy off Braves starter Bud Norris.
