REBECCA SAUNDERS COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE. 15TH EDITION 29.08. – 09.09.2018 KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY 2018 KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018. The annual Tyrolean festival of contemporary music provides a stage for performances, encounters, and for the exploration and exchange of new musical ideas. With a different thematic focus each year, KLANGSPUREN aims to present a survey of the fascinating, diverse panorama that the music of our time boasts. KLANGSPUREN values open discourse, participation, and partnership and actively seeks encounters with locals as well as visitors from abroad. The entire beautiful region of Tyrol unfolds as the festival’s playground, where the most cutting-edge and modern forms of music as well as many young composers and musicians are presented. On the occasion of its own milestone anniversary – among other anniversaries that KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ 2018 will be celebrating this year – the 25th edition of the festival has chosen the motto „Festivities. Places.“ (in German: „Feste. Orte.“). The program emphasizes projects and works that focus on aspects of celebrations, festivities, rituals, and events and have a specific reference to place and situation. KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The Academy is an offshoot of the renowned International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) in Frankfurt and was founded in the same year as IEMA, in 2003. The Academy is central to KLANGSPUREN and has developed into one of the most successful projects of the Tyrolean festival for new music. The high standards of the Academy are vouched for by prominent figures who have acted as Composers in Residence: György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Steve Reich, Benedict Mason, Michael Gielen, Wolfgang Rihm, Martin Matalon, Johannes Maria Staud, Heinz Holliger, George Benjamin, Unsuk Chin, Hans Zender, Hans Abrahamsen, Wolfgang Mitterer, Beat Furrer, Enno Poppe, and most recently in 2017, Sofia Gubaidulina. -

Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Phaos kommt aus dem Griechischen und steht für Licht – in Beat Furrers Lesart wird daraus eine Klangstudie über phosphoreszierende Lichtpartikel und eine Metapher für drohende Katastrophen. Márton Illés lädt die Ausnahmegeigerin Patricia Kopatchinskaja in »Vont-tér« zu einem komplexen Dialog mit dem WDR Sinfonie- orchester und einer gemeinsamen Suche nach neuen instrumen- talen Klängen, Spieltechniken und Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten ein. Im Wechselspiel mit dem Orchester agiert die Sologeige im offe- nen Klangraum, entfernt sich von spieltechnischen Konventionen und findet eigene Spielmöglichkeiten in Márton Illés’ originärer Musiksprache. -

Diana Soh Composer Described as “a composer to follow” (France Musique), Diana Soh is one of today’s most exciting young artists. A multi- disciplinary Singaporean composer based in Paris, she has written for a wide range of instrumentation from chamber music, to orchestra, dance, film, choral and vocal music, and multi-media site-specific works. Diana’s musical interest is directed at exploring performance interactivity as well as obtaining specific sound colours from the intimate collaboration with performers. Known for integrating the use of technology and interested in theatre, she often surprises her audiences and finds ways to address social issues of our times in her work and “composes the impossible” (Concert Classic). Notable highlights include A is for Aiyah with soprano Elise Chauvin as the soloist, which was premiered in Singapore by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (2018) as well as her string quartet sssh by the Mettis Quartet at the Aix en Provence Festival (2018). Her upcoming seasons see her venturing into the music theatre world with 2 operas: Façon Tragique de Tuer une Femme which will be premiered in 2023, and The Carmen Case the season after. Her adventure in vocal writing continues with a mono-drama for Opera de Lyon and a commission from the Maîtrise de Radio France, Parisce and a solo voice piece titled La Ville-Zizi. In addition, of smaller things will be presented in Austria by Schallfeld Ensemble in 2021 and Of the spaces between by Ensemble Æquilibrium in Singapore in 2022. Since establishing herself in Paris, Diana was Composer-in-Residence for 2 years (2012 / 2013) at the National Centre for Creation - La Muse en Circuit, concluded with a one-hour monographic concert of her works during the 2013 Festival Extension. -

Mary Oliver w ww.oliverheggen.com Mary Oliver (violin, viola, hardanger fiddle) was born in La Jolla, California, and studied at San Francisco State University (Bachelor of Music), Mills College (Master of Fine Arts) and the University of California, San Diego where she received her Ph.D in 1993 for her research in the theory and practice of improvised music. Her work as a soloist encompasses both composed and improvised contemporary music; she has premiered works by among others,Richard Barrett, John Cage, Chaya Czernowin, Brian Ferneyhough, Joëlle Léandre Liza Lim, George E. Lewis , Richard Teitelbaum and Iannis Xenakis . Oliver has worked alongside improvising musicians such as Han Bennink, Mark Dresser, Cor Fuhler, Jean-Charles François, Tristan Honsinger, Joëlle Léandre, George E. Lewis, Nicole Mitchell, Andy Moor, Misha Mengelberg Evan Parker, and Anthony Pateras. As a soloist and ensemble player she has performed in numerous international festivals including the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik ,Donaueschinger Musiktage 2002, Bimhuis October Meeting, Vancouver and Toronto Jazz Festivals, Ars Electronica , Ars Musica, London Musicians Collective Festival, Münchner Biennale, Salzburger Festspiele and MaerzMusik Festival in Berlin. In 1994, she was an artist in residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart where she added, through their generosity, the hardinger fiddle to her instrumentarium. For the past twelve years she has been based in Amsterdam where she has worked locally and internationally with various ensembles such as Instant Composer’s Pool (ICP) Orchestra, Magpie Music and Dance Company, AACM Black Earth Ensemble, Scapino Ballet , Elision Ensemble, MAE, Het National Ballet and Xenakis Ensemble. Currently she teaches at the Hogeschol voor Kunst, Media en Technology and a member of ICP Orchestra, Ammü (with Han Bennink, Johanna Varner, cello and Christofer Varner – trombone) and Magpie Music Dance Company. -

San Diego Public Library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Vic Cardell Monday, August 25, 2008 619-236-5810 Päivikki Nykter, Anna Savvas-Katkov, and Cecilia Kim to Perform at Central Library Concert Will Feature Works by Haydn, Fauré, and Falla SAN DIEGO – The third concert in the City of San Diego Public Library fall concert series will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. The program will feature a recital by Päivikki Nykter, violin; Anna Savvas-Katkov, piano; and Cecilia Kim, cello. The performance will be held in the third floor auditorium of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego. The program will include Joseph Haydn’s spirited Trio No. 39 in G Major, “Gypsy” (1795); Gabriel Fauré’s lovely Sonata in A Major for violin and piano, op. 13 (1877); and Manuel de Falla’s Suite populaire espagnole, for violin and piano (1914), arranged from a collection of seven popular Spanish songs. Violinist Päivikki Nykter, a native of Finland, is a graduate of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. She has held positions in many orchestras including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Ms.Nykter was a founding member of the Finnish contemporary ensemble AVANTI! and has maintained her passion for new music, premiering numerous works written for her. She has worked with such notable composers as Brian Ferneyough, Roger Reynolds, Will Ogdon, Rand Steiger, Yoji Yuasa, Chaya Czernowin, Kaija Saariaho, Jonathan Harvey and David Burge. She has appeared as a guest artist in several festivals, including Giacinto Scelsi Festival in New York City, Darmstadt New Music Festival in Germany and International Mountain View Festival of Chamber Music and Song in Calgary, Canada. -

Miller Theatre at Columbia University 2015-16 | 27th Season Opening Night Run Time Error Simon Steen-Andersen JACK Quartet Thursday, September 17, 8:00 p.m. From the Executive Director This September we begin Miller Theatre’s 2015-16 season with three incredible collaborations. Tonight you’ll see Danish composer and performer Simon Steen- Andersen join with one of our favorite ensembles, the JACK Quartet, on a very special project. Run Time Error, the video work that opens and closes this evening, invites us to broaden our sense of both sonic and spatial musical possibility, and it does so in a very personal way: by turning the theatre itself into an instrument. Throughout this new season, Miller Theatre will present performances that bring contemporary classical music out of the formal settings of a concert hall, and Steen-Andersen’s work makes for an exhilarating kick-off. Run Time Error is one of several new works created start-to-finish at Miller this month. As part of an annual collaboration with Deborah Cullen, director and chief curator of Columbia’s Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery, this is our third time co- commissioning a visual artist to use our lobby as their canvas. This season, Scherezade Garcia has transformed the space with an amazing new work, inviting anyone who steps inside our doors to activate their imagination. Our largest artistic residency is just about to begin: Morningside Lights! A week of free arts workshops for participants of all ages begins this Saturday, and culminates in a magnificent illuminated procession through Morningside Park on September 26. -

ROGER REYNOLDS | CELEBRATION 80 February 3-5, 2015 ROGER REYNOLDS Photo credit: Malcolm Crowthers Photo credit: Joseph Kirkish b. 1934 ROGER REYNOLDS | CELEBRATION 80 February 3-5, 2015 Born in Detroit in 1934, Reynolds commands a reputation as a bold explorer of what he likes to describe as the multilayered character of experience. For example, his works are known for engaging listeners with the spatial dimension of music and with a revelatory, complexly theatrical approach to text and voice. An excellent example can be found with george WASHINGTON. At the beginning of its season in September 2013, the National Symphony Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach gave the world premiere of george WASHINGTON, a work commissioned in conjunction with the recent opening of the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington. Collaborating with such colleagues as the intermedia artist Ross Karre and others, Reynolds designed george WASHINGTON as a continuous work in five interconnected sections that create a complex, nuanced portrait of the first president through an amalgam of musical score, narrators portraying Washington (in his own words) from three stages in his life, and continually morphing visuals projected onto three screens. The work dramatizes an ongoing and overlapping dialogue among different aspects of Washington’s personality over the course of his life, across time. Reynolds got a relatively late start on his career as a composer, having graduated with a degree in engineering physics and after working briefly in the -

I think in terms of curves and lines, light and shadows, distances, the speed of the brush, textures, gestures, move- ments and stillness, layering, blurring, coloring, the inter-penetration of ink, brushstrokes, energy, breath, spatial resonance, spiritual vitality, void and emptiness.
