Das the TravelerBy SpikeLoverAt a dress-up party, one guest is a REAL Neanderthal. How he got to twenty first century England is a puzzle. Unfortunately, the time machine that brought him to our time was not so hot and so he couldn't go back (way back) home because he would die on the way. What good luck that Captain Jack was available to tutor Das in the ways of the modern world! He didn't volunteer for the job, but it turned out well. Das began looking for a mate nearly as soon as he learned English. The Doctor and Rose went into the past and met incredibly weird group of "researchers". They will do ANYTHING their leader tells them, even go into a cave where a large monster eats them one per day. The primitive Humans and the Neanderthals live close to each other. Rose gets engaged to one the natives and later loses her head in a literal sense. The book has so many twists and turns I was afraid the next Doctor Who novel I read would disappoint.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Happy SisterBy BrooksieI know nothing about Doctor Who but I got this for my little sister, and she ADORES it. The minute she saw the man's face she yelled out happily and began to read the first few pages before exclaiming that a Rose and Jack were in there. Don't exactly know what that meant as the first thing that came to mind was the Titanic when hearing those two names, but she hugged me plenty so the two must have been important. Either way, she loved it and said that 'Nine' was perfectly well written. 100% she rated it.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. If you're new to Doctor Who books....By The RiverwatcherThe Doctor is celebrating his 50th anniversary this year. That's 50 years of television episodes, 50 years of music scores, and 50 years of original books. As a new "Whovian" I've been interested in in reading some of the books, but was completely overwhelmed by the vast number, however the books released for the 50th Anniversary have provided me with an set of "recommendations" as to what read first. From there you can figure out which writers you like, and which Doctor's you prefer."Only Human" in particular was a fun read. Since we only had one season with Eccelstein's Doctor, it was fun to engage in another adventure with him, Rose, and Captain Jack. Even more importantly, the story line: Neanderthals, time travel, and futuristic Earth with limited technological capabilities-- are fascinating. It makes for a great read. A ninth Doctor adventure, featuring the Doctor as played by Christopher Eccleston and hiscompanion Rose. Reports of a time disturbance lead the Doctor to modern-day London, where he discovers a Neanderthal Man, 28 thousand years after his race became extinct. A trip back to the dawn of humanity only deepens the mystery: who are these strange humans from the far future now living in the distant past? The Doctor must learn the truth about the Osterberg experiment before history is changed forever. About the AuthorGareth Roberts was born in Chesham, Buckinghamshire in 1968. His scripts for Doctor Who on television include 'The Shakespeare Code' (2007), 'The Unicorn And The Wasp' (2008), 'The Lodger' (2010) and 'Closing Time' (2011), and he has also written many scripts for the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures, as well as scripts for programmes as diverse as Emmerdale and Randall Hopkirk (Deceased). He has written nine original Doctor Who novels, and lives in West London. McGrath I recently finished reading Doctor Who: Shada: The Lost Adventure by Douglas Adams, completed as a novel by Gareth Roberts. The novel has all the comedy you would expect from a Doctor Who episode written by Adams and starring Tom Baker. For those who may not be familiar with it, the Doctor Who episode Shada was partially filmed in 1979 when a strike brought production to a halt, so that it was never completed and thus never aired. The book's opening paragraph indicates a "theological" theme in the book which is just what one might expect from Adams: "At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.

She weed on the upholstery again. It’s nice to have pets to stroke, and we do love Dusty, but she has been too naughty recently. She gets in the way. Later a man over the road triped over her and broke his leg. That was inconvenient and the man needed a health‐patch. That was when I took a long look at Dusty and decided she was very inefficient.

  • Andrew Cooper (Liverpool Hope Universityi)
Panoptikum nr 11 (18) 2012 Andrew Cooper (Liverpool Hope Universityi) Adapting to Survive: The Cultural Regeneration of Doctor Who Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction television show in history and next year celebrates its 50th anniversary. This essay will explore two key el- ements which can be attributed to the shows survival; its ability to reflect cul- tural demands and its ability to adapt works for television from other mediums. Originally designed to ensure the survival of the show after the lead actor left, regeneration has been a key part of Doctor Who. Not only has the Doctor himself regenerated, now ten times, but his enemies, T.A.R.D.I.S. and the whole design of the show have had to regenerate in order to survive. Each new actor playing the Doctor „inflect the »Doctorish« qualities in significant different ways, providing new possibilities”1 as well as refreshing the audience with different perspectives on one continuing story. The show has had to change to fit modern technology, both involving interactive technology, such as webisodes, as well as up to date special ef- fects. For Doctor Who to remain successful therefore it has to be able to regenerate to its ever changing audience. In 1963 the producers of Doctor Who needed a monster for its second serial, thus on the 21st December 1963 Terry Nation’s Daleks made their first appearance. The Daleks, created only 20 years after the Second World War were based on the Nazis. This is why in 1975’s Genesis of the Daleks the Dalek’s creator Davros draws parallels with Adolf Hitler.
