In his heyday, he ruled the small screen and the audience absolutely adored him. His heavy addiction to drink and gambling led him down a dark path, however, causing John to lose almost everything he had worked so hard for. Popularity, friends and success disappeared faster than they had come. Over Water, a series by Flemish broadcaster Eén, tells the story of John Beckers, who is given an ultimate chance by his wife and two kids to get his life back on track again and regain their trust. After his umpteenth stay in rehab, John joins Michielsen Shipping Co, the company of his father-in-law with renewed courage. The former TV celeb starts working for the port. It’s a process of ups and downs. Until the day comes when he has the port start working for him. Will John Beckers be able to contain his old demons and resist new temptations in this new, cut-throat world? Will this allow him to regain the trust and love of his wife and children? Over Water tells the story of how a former addict can make the wrong choices with the right intentions. And how, along the way, a newbie can become a lynchpin in the most lucrative but also the by far most dangerous dealings on the Antwerp docks. Over Water boasts a top-notch cast that includes Tom Dewispelaere, Tom Van Dyck, Ruth Becquart, Natali Broods, Kevin Janssens and Jeroen Perceval. The series was written by Tom Lenaerts and Paul Baeten Gronda and directed by the duo Norman Bates. Like our Northwest Film & Video Festival, which celebrates the unique visions of artists in our community, PIFF seeks to engage, educate, entertain and challenge. We invite you to explore and celebrate not only the art of film, but also the world around you. It is said that film is a universal language—able to transcend geographic, political and cultural boundaries in a singular fashion. In the spirit of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous observation, “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler who is foreign,” this year’s films allow us to discover what unites rather than what divides. The Festival also unites our community, bringing together culturally diverse audiences, a remarkable cross-section of cinematic voices, public and private funders of the arts, corporate sponsors and global film industry members. This fabulous ecology makes the event possible, and we wish our credits at the back of the program could better convey our deep appreci- ation of all who help make the Festival happen.

For the pur- poses of this research, a corpus of ten Flemish movies (approx. 18 hours of recordings, 83.000 words) has been put together. Based on two memoirs, one from acclaimed journalist David Sheff and one from his son, Nic Sheff. As Nic repeatedly relapses, the Sheffs are faced with the harsh reality that addiction is a disease that does not discriminate and can hit any family at any time. Long Synopsis At 18, Nicolas Sheff was a good student, editor of his high school newspaper, an actor in the school play and a member of the water polo team. A voracious reader and a talented artist, Nic was set to enter college in the fall. He had started experimenting with drugs when he was 12, but in his late teens he tried meth for the first time and, as he writes, “the world went from black and white to Technicolor.” Nic went almost instantly from a teenager dabbling with substances to a having a full-blown dependency. Beautiful Boy is a searingly honest/frank account of the Sheff family’s journey through Nic’s continuing struggles with addiction. Based on acclaimed journalist David Sheff’s bestseller of the same name and his son Nic’s breakout memoir Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, the film presents a unique portrait of the ways addiction can destroy lives and the power of love to rebuild them.
