JOHN D AFFARN : John Daffarn 'Daffenor' arrived as a steerage passenger on the 'Agnes' which sailed from London arriving on 12th June 1832, he was described as a settler. It is thought he was also working on one of Antill's properties at Stonequarry (Picton) as his daughter Ann was born there. He later he moved to another one of Antill's properties.

Queanbeyan "The Dog and Stile Inn" was opened in April 1841, initially in a timber building, by John Daffarn, former superintendent of Henry Colden Antill's property near Carwoola. The Inn was Queanbeyan's second licensed establishment, the first having been the Elmsall Inn operated by John Hunt and Joseph Kaye. Daffarn's inn was rebuilt in brick soon after it opened. The inn was strategically located to capture the passing trade of travellers entering the town along MacQuoid Street, the only access road from Goulburn in the north and in the east. It was the first of what would become a series of inns along MacQuoid Street, all of them catering to travellers. Following the death of his wife the year after he opened the inn, Daffarn put the establishment up for sale. It was bought by John Gray, a pioneer Queanbeyan businessman and the town's first postmaster and poundkeeper. John Daffarn was late the Poundkeeper at Braidwood, NSW.

John Daffern convicts listed as being assigned to him at Queanbeyan they were: He had Michael Murphy arrived per 'Surry1 (8) 1836 was assigned to John Daffarn and Mr. Moon at Queanbeyan William Morgan convict arrived per Bengal Merchant assigned to John Daffarn and Mr. Mowatt as a shepherd.

John's wife Margaret died 21st August 1842 and was buried at The Oaks Burial Ground which was the first burial ground of Queanbeyan. Early information on the burial ground states the earliest burial took place in a paddock adjacent to "The Oaks" homestead. It would also appear that no headstones existed in the burial ground. The site was used for burials from 1838 to 1846 when the Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery was established. However one burial took place after 1846 when an unknown Indian juggler was buried on 8 Apr 1863. When burials took place in this burial ground, Oaks Estate was part of . In 1912 Oaks Estate was acquired by the Commonwealth and became a part of the Australian Capital Territory. Over the years the burial ground's exact location had been forgotten. However, on 21 April 1991 a back-hoe operator, digging a storm-water trench in a drive way of 9 Florence Street Oaks Estate unearthed skeletal remains. An anthropologist from the Australian National University confirmed the bones to be 150 years old. It was then established the site was The Oaks Burial Ground. The following names of burials at The Oaks Burial Ground have been extracted from a publication by the Queanbeyan City Council in conjunction with the Queanbeyan and District Historical Society (1982). 'Queanbeyan Pioneer Cemeteries'.
