Abstract This thesis focuses on homeland security of the Islamic Republic of Iran with respect to the possibility of an uprising being formed as a result of the activity of domestic subversive terrorist groups. The possibility of an uprising is researched in four areas defined by David Galula both form the perspective of the state and from the perspective of the individual groups. Based on the data gathered, the thesis identifies sources of tension in the form of several ethnic and religious groups in the territory of Iran. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to evaluate the capabilities and opportunities of the terrorist groups to evolve into a successful national uprising.

  • Water Dispute Escalating Between Iran and Afghanistan
Atlantic Council SOUTH ASIA CENTER ISSUE BRIEF Water Dispute Escalating between Iran and Afghanistan AUGUST 2016 FATEMEH AMAN Iran and Afghanistan have no major territorial disputes, unlike Afghanistan and Pakistan or Pakistan and India. However, a festering disagreement over allocation of water from the Helmand River is threatening their relationship as each side suffers from droughts, climate change, and the lack of proper water management. Both countries have continued to build dams and dig wells without environmental surveys, diverted the flow of water, and planted crops not suitable for the changing climate. Without better management and international help, there are likely to be escalating crises. Improving and clarifying existing agreements is also vital. The United States once played a critical role in mediating water disputes between Iran and Afghanistan. It is in the interest of the United States, which is striving to shore up the Afghan government and the region at large, to help resolve disagreements between Iran and Afghanistan over the Helmand and other shared rivers. • Continuity and Change in Iran's Approach Toward the Nagorno
Geopolitics Quarterly, Volume: 16, No 4, Winter 2021 PP 165-189 Continuity and Change in Iran’s Approach toward the Nagorno-Karabakh Crisis (1997-2018) Hamidreza Azizi - Assistant Professor, Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran. Hamidreza Hamidfar - M.A. of International Relations, Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran. Received: 06/10/2019 Accepted: 25/02/2020 __________________________________________________________________ Abstract The current article aims at studying the elements of continuity and change in Iran’s foreign policy toward the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis during Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Hassan Rouhani’s administrations. It tries to answer the question as to which factors have contributed to continuity and change in Iran's foreign policy toward the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis between 1997 and 2018? The article shows that although the principles of Iran’s foreign policy toward the South Caucasus and the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis have not changed during this period, the changing role of the external powers – Russia and the West – as well as different foreign policy priorities defined by the three administrations, have caused changes in Iran's approach to this issue. An inductive approach and a qualitative research method has been used in this article. Official documents, news and research articles have been used as the main sources of data in this article. Keywords: Iran, Nagorno-Karabakh, The South Caucasus, Armenia, Azerbaijan. E-mail : [email protected] 166 Geopolitics Quarterly, Volume: 16, No 4, Winter 2021 ____________________________ 1. THE WASHINGTON INSTITUTE FOR NEAR EAST POLICY n JUNE 2020 n PN81 Saeid Golkar TAKING BACK THE NEIGHBORHOOD The IRGC Provincial Guard’s Mission to Re-Islamize Iran During 2019, the Islamic Republic of Iran erupted in nearly simultaneous public protests in cities across the country. Thousands of citizens stopped traffic along major highways, marched, and shouted complaints about the gasoline price hike that had ostensibly sparked the demonstrations in the first place. They also aired their broader complaints against the leadership. Indeed, more than forty years after the country’s Islamic Revolution, the Iranian regime has become more repressive than ever, with an apparatus that attempts to reach into every facet of life and society. The protests, for their part, were brutally quelled through force. This was a familiar experience for Iranians seeking to express their displeasure. Scholars and journalists have produced a growing body of literature on political repression in Iran and the regime’s oppressive tools, including the police and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in general.1 © 2020 THE WASHINGTON INSTITUTE FOR NEAR EAST POLICY. The middle-class in Iran has been all but extinguished. Save for a few affluent neighborhoods that house the extremely wealthy, the vast majority of the country’s 80-million population live well under the poverty line. Breadwinners for many households are forced to take up secondary and tertiary jobs to make ends meet. Almost all across Iran, notices are put up on city walls by people willing to sell a kidney for the equivalent of $2,000. Those who do have a job, such as miners and factory workers, often are forced to work for months without pay. The grim state of poverty contrasts with the immense Iranian national wealth that is being poured by the authorities into Syria to prop up dictator Bashar al-Assad and into other Middle Eastern hotspots such as Iraq and Yemen as part of the regime’s drive to impose its hegemony on the region.

FOREWORD epression at home and export of terrorism and fundamentalism abroad Rare the two prongs of the strategy adopted by the misogynist and medieval regime ruling Iran to preserve its rule. Iranian women have always been the first victims of domestic repression under the pretext of enforcing the mandatory Hijab. Contrary to the mullahs’ expectations, Iranian women have refused to accept this imposition and defied the regime’s intention to deprive them of the right to choose their own clothing, a systematic and prevalent trend which has turned into a political and security issue for the regime. That is why the first task of various government bodies is to suppress women over the form of clothing. This was first revealed in December 2015 by Hossein Ashtari, the commander-in-chief of the State Security Force, that «26 government agencies are responsible for the issue of Hijab and Chastity.» Enforcing the mandatory hijab, a top priority of government agencies The issue of the compulsory veil has taken on political and national security significance over the past 40 years, and turned into one of the regime’s top priorities. The misogynist regime in Iran has developed various mechanisms to enforce the mandatory Hijab, and the organization set up for this task has widely expanded through the years. On December 4, 2005, the regime’s Supreme Council for Cultural Revolution passed a law entitled, «Law on the Development of Executive Procedures for Hijab and Chastity» and defined the responsibility of enforcing the mandatory hijab for at least 26 government agencies. The law laid emphasis on “the priority of the issue of ‘Hijab and Chastity’ in the plans and programs of the regime’s executive bodies.” The Supreme Council for Cultural Revolution also worked out another solution.

  • Iran's Nuclear Program
Iran’s Nuclear Program: Status Paul K. Kerr Analyst in Nonproliferation Updated May 10, 2019 Congressional Research Service 7-.... www.crs.gov RL34544 Iran’s Nuclear Program: Status Summary Iran’s nuclear program began during the 1950s. The United States has expressed concern since the mid-1970s that Tehran might develop nuclear weapons. Iran’s construction of gas centrifuge uranium enrichment facilities is currently the main source of proliferation concern. Gas centrifuges can produce both low-enriched uranium (LEU), which can be used in nuclear power reactors, and weapons-grade highly enriched uranium (HEU), which is one of the two types of fissile material used in nuclear weapons. Is Iran Capable of Building Nuclear Weapons? The United States has assessed that Tehran possesses the technological and industrial capacity to produce nuclear weapons. But Iran has not yet mastered all of the necessary technologies for building such weapons. Whether Iran has a viable design for a nuclear weapon is unclear. A National Intelligence Estimate made public in 2007 assessed that Tehran “halted its nuclear weapons program” in 2003. The estimate, however, also assessed that Tehran is “keeping open the option to develop nuclear weapons” and that any decision to end a nuclear weapons program is “inherently reversible.” U.S. intelligence officials have reaffirmed this judgment on several occasions. Obtaining fissile material is widely regarded as the most difficult task in building nuclear weapons. As of January 2014, Iran had produced an amount of LEU containing up to 5% uranium-235, which, if further enriched, could theoretically have produced enough HEU for as many as eight nuclear weapons.
