Brief History of Dzogchen This is the printer-friendly version of: http: / / www.berzinarchives.com / web / en / archives / advanced / dzogchen / basic_points / brief_history_dzogchen.html Alexander Berzin November 10-12, 2000 Introduction Dzogchen (rdzogs-chen), the great completeness, is a Mahayana system of practice leading to enlightenment and involves a view of reality, way of meditating, and way of behaving (lta-sgom-spyod gsum). It is found earliest in the Nyingma and Bon (pre-Buddhist) traditions. Bon, according to its own description, was founded in Tazig (sTag-gzig), an Iranian cultural area of Central Asia, by Shenrab Miwo (gShen-rab mi-bo) and was brought to Zhang-zhung (Western Tibet) in the eleventh century BCE. There is no way to validate this scientifically. Buddha lived in the sixth century BCE in India. The Introduction of Pre-Nyingma Buddhism and Zhang-zhung Rites to Central Tibet Zhang-zhung was conquered by Yarlung (Central Tibet) in 645 CE. The Yarlung Emperor Songtsen-gampo (Srong-btsan sgam-po) had wives not only from the Chinese and Nepali royal families (both of whom brought a few Buddhist texts and statues), but also from the royal family of Zhang-zhung. The court adopted Zhang-zhung (Bon) burial rituals and animal sacrifice, although Bon says that animal sacrifice was native to Tibet, not a Bon custom. The Emperor built thirteen Buddhist temples around Tibet and Bhutan, but did not found any monasteries. This pre-Nyingma phase of Buddhism in Central Tibet did not have dzogchen teachings. In fact, it is difficult to ascertain what level of Buddhist teachings and practice were introduced. -

Contact the author Rethinking Classical Tibetan Pedagogy The Importance of Applying Multidisciplinary Research to Tibetan as a Second Language Education (TSL) Abstract The following paper explores classical Tibetan language pedagogy as it’s generally practiced in the West, while suggesting a radical reinterpretation to that approach by providing alternatives based on the consensus of multidisciplinary research from second language education and linguistics, among others. Especial attention is paid to the importance of production processes (speaking and writing), phonology (listening and speaking), and environment (language exposure) and their roles in language learning contexts; these concerns lead us to the conclusion that the spoken language ought to be the basis for the study of sophisticated literature, even in a classical language context. We then turn toward the specific issues of Tibetan language literacy: the language diglossia; its history; why “classical” Tibetan is not a classic example of a classical language; and, briefly, how to overcome these obstacles in a Tibetan as a Second Language (TSL) educational context. Re-Inventing Bcud Len As Vitalising Dietary Supplements in Contemporary Tibetan Medicine
Asian Medicine 7 (2012) 196–224 brill.com/asme Treating Essence with Essence: Re-inventing bcud len as Vitalising Dietary Supplements in Contemporary Tibetan Medicine Barbara Gerke Abstract Bcud len (pronounced chulen) or ‘essence extraction’ practices have been described in classical Tibetan medical and religious texts as an element of rejuvenation therapies and preventive anti- ageing methods. These practices include the ingestion ofbcud len pills taken as a dietary supple- ment or as a substitute for food during meditation and fasting retreats. This paper1 discusses how ideas of bcud len are interpreted by Men-Tsee-Khang-trained Tibetan doctors in India as ‘health tonics’ and ‘dietary supplements.’ What underlies contemporary Tibetan medical ideas of an ‘essence extraction’ in relation to Tibetan rejuvenation therapies and pharmacological manufac- turing practices of such ‘tonics’? I argue that not all bcud len are ‘essence extractions’ and that what constitutes an ‘essence’ receives various interpretations by contemporary Tibetan doctors. Ethnographic examples presented are based on postdoctoral fieldwork in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India (2009–2010). The Old sNar thang Tibetan Buddhist Canon Revisited, with Special Reference to dBus pa blo gsal’s bsTan ’gyur Catalogue Orna Almogi (Hamburg)* 1. Introductory Remarks he compilation of Buddhist literature in Tibetan translation in small units is documented from as early as the so-called Grey T Period, namely, the period between what are known as the Early and Later Disseminations of Buddhism in Tibet. Such compila- tory units consisted mainly, but not exclusively, of scriptural works of varying scope and kinds, in one or more volumes—including Prajñāpāramitā (Sher phyin) collections, the Buddhāvataṃsaka (Sangs rgyas phal po che) and Ratnakūṭa (dKon mchog brtsegs) anthologies, Tantra collections (rGyud ’bum), collections of miscellaneous Sūtras (mDo mang), and Vinaya (’Dul ba), Stotra (bsTod pa), and Dhāraṇī (gZungs) collections. As has been demonstrated in several previous studies, such small collections later served as building blocks for vari- ous bKa’ ’gyur editions.1 Information regarding comparable units of non-scriptural works, which later served as building blocks for the bsTan ’gyur, is available only to a much lesser degree, but there is no doubt that these existed as well. Needless to say that mixed compila- tions containing scriptural works along with commentarial and other material directly related to them have also existed. A Brief History of Japanese Studies in Tibetan Buddhism**
YOSHIMURA Hiromi * A Brief History of Japanese Studies in Tibetan Buddhism ** In this essay I would like to present a brief history of Tibetan studies in Japan. I shall introduce the beginning and the development of Japanese research on Tibetan Buddhism. Recently, Sadakane Ayako published a bibliography of Tibetan studies. This bibliography includes not only articles and books in Japanese language but also those in Chinese. It is a very convenient bibliography for researchers of Tibetan subjects. Among those articles and books she collected, the earliest publication is a book titled Rama-kyØ enkaku ラマ教沿革 (A History of Lamaism) by a Japanese scholar which was published in 1877 (Meiji 10). Hence, it has been already over a century since Tibetan studies have started in Japan. For convenience’s sake, I will divide the succession of Japanese researchers into three generations. The first generation belongs to the period from the end of the Meiji period to the end of the TaishØ period, namely from around 1900 to 1930. The second generation belongs to the period from the end of the TaishØ period to the middle of the ShØwa period, that is from around 1930 to 1960. The third generation covers the time since the 1960s. Of course, such classification cannot be taken too strictly since some of the researchers were working in times covering two generations. Also, some scholars whose main research took place in the period of the second generation are still living and some of them are quite active. Representative scholars of the first generation were Kawaguchi Ekai, Teramoto Enga, Aoki BunkyØ and Tada TØkan. -

INTRODUCTION Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) was the founder of the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism, which became the dominant order in Tibet, making Tsongkhapa Tibet’s most influential teacher. His collected writings in one Tibetan blockprint edition consist of eighteen volumes. Along with these are the collected works of his two main disciples, mKhas-grub-rje in twelve volumes, and rGyal-tshab-rje in eight volumes. Together these comprise the rJe yab sras gsung ’bum, the collected writings of rJe Tsongkhapa, father and [spiritual] sons. A twenty-volume Tibetan blockprint edition of Tsongkhapa’s collected writings includes 210 works, ranging from very short to very long. These were reproduced and catalogued in The Tibetan Tripitaka, Peking Edition, edited by Daisetz T. Suzuki, Tokyo-Kyoto: Tibetan Tripitaka Research Institute, 1955-1961, part III: “Extra, Tibetan Works,” vols. 152- 161, works numbered 6001-6210. Tsongkhapa’s most famous work is the Lam rim chen mo, now available in complete English translation in three volumes, The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, 2000- 2004.
