  • EARTH, WIND & FIRE -‐ Bio XRIJF JUNE 20-‐28, 2014 During the 1970S
EARTH, WIND & FIRE - Bio During the 1970s, a new brand of pop music was born - one that was steeped in African and African- American styles - particularly jazz and R&B but appealed to a broader cross-section of the listening public. As founder and leader of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White not only embraced but also helped bring about this evolution of pop, which bridged the gap that has often separated the musical tastes of black and white America. It certainly was successful, as EWF combined high-caliber musicianship, wide-ranging musical genre eclecticism, and '70s multicultural spiritualism. "I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before," Maurice explains. "Although we were basically jazz musicians, we played soul, funk, gospel, blues, jazz, rock and dance music...which somehow ended up becoming pop. We were coming out of a decade of experimentation, mind expansion and cosmic awareness. I wanted our music to convey messages of universal love and harmony without force- feeding listeners' spiritual content." Maurice was born December 19, 1941, in Memphis, TN. He was immersed in a rich musical culture that spanned the boundaries between jazz, gospel, R&B, blues and early rock. All of these styles played a role in the development of Maurice's musical identity. At age six, he began singing in his church's gospel choir but soon his interest turned to percussion. He began working gigs as a drummer while still in high school. His first professional performance was with Booker T. Jones, who eventually achieved stardom as Booker T and the MGs.

Columbus City Schools This is an older resource which can provide ideas for teaching the Standards for English Language Arts Curriculum student mastery using The Watsons Go To Birmingham, but it is aligned to Reading and Writing Ohio's Learning Standards before the 2017 revisions and Ohio's State Tests. Course/Grade Text Type Grade 7 Narrative Text (19 days) Novel Unit The Watsons Go To Portfolio Writing Prompt: After reading The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963, write a narrative about the bombing of Birmingham - 1963 (1000L) the Birmingham Church from the perspective of one of the victims or the victim‟s family. Use similes, metaphors, and allusions to develop your work. Common Core Writing: Text Types, Responding to Reading, and Research The Standards acknowledge the fact that whereas some writing skills, such as the ability to plan, revise, edit, and publish, are applicable to many types of writing, other skills are more properly defined in terms of specific writing types: arguments, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives. Standard 9 stresses the importance of the reading-writing connection by requiring students to draw upon and write about evidence from literary and informational texts. Because of the centrality of writing to most forms of inquiry, research standards are prominently included in this strand, though skills important to research are infused throughout the document. (CCSS, Introduction, 8) Narrative Narrative writing conveys experience, either real or imaginary, and uses time as its deep structure. It can be used for many purposes, such as to inform, instruct, persuade, or entertain. Students produce narratives that take the form of creative fictional stories, memoirs, anecdotes, and autobiographies.

  • 4. Froze up Southern Folks
Watsons Birmingham 11/1/01 9:39 AM Page 32 4. Froze Up Southern Folks B ecause she’d been born in Alabama, Momma didn’t really know anything about the cold. Even though she’d lived in Flint for fifteen years she still thought cold weather could kill you in a flash. That’s why me and Joey were the warmest kids at Clark Elementary School. Momma wouldn’t let us go out on a cold winter day unless we were wearing a couple of T-shirts, a couple of sweaters, a couple of jackets and a couple of coats, plus gigantic snow pants that hung on your shoulders by suspenders, plus socks and big, black, shiny rubber boots that closed with five metal buckles. We wore so many clothes that when we pulled our final coat on we could barely bend our arms. We wore so many clothes that when Byron wasn’t around, the other kids said stuff like “Here come some of them Weird Watsons doing their Mummy imitations.”But the worst part of this was having to take all this stuff off once we got to school. It was my job to make sure Joey got out of her coats and things O.K., so after I took all of my junk off I went down to the kinder- garten and started working on hers. Joey usually looked like a little zombie while I peeled the coats and jackets off of her.
