Dear Parish Family,

As we work together to change the culture to embrace all human life, we work hard to find inspirational stories that reveal goodness, resilience, compassion, hope, love and acceptance in the crosses that we all share. Ben Langlois has shared his story with us to inspire us and inform us regarding Keene High School Unified Sports. Ben Langlois was in the Better Part Prayer Group this past year and his depth of insight into the gospel and his understanding of our human need to experience love by the small ways we treat each other left all of us in the prayer group smiling, strengthened, and uplifted. You may recognize him from the parish, as a lector at Mass, or working on the front lines of Hannaford in Keene. As you read his story, please consider supporting Keene High School Unified Sports/Special Olympics. If you are involved in high school sports as a student or parent, please consider helping not only with do- nations, but also with your time and talent as a mentor or a volunteer. Ben readily responded when asked to write his experience for the Love for Life Collaborative. Thank you Ben & Diane

My name is Ben Langlois and I would like to tell you about my experience with Special Olympics and Unified Sports. I have a disability known as High Functioning Autism which affects my coordination and social skills. When I was younger, I was accepted by most of my peers in sports, but I was never good enough to make certain teams. I tried out for the basketball team at Keene High School, but I was cut. It was a very tough time because I thought I would never have the opportunity to play organized basketball again. I had a lot of support from friends, teachers, and family during that time. Shortly after being cut from the traditional team, I learned about the Unified program. This program consists of students with and without intellectual disabilities playing together on the same team. Once I attended my first shoot around, I knew that this program was right for me. I told my mom that I wanted to join this team. She was hesitant because by playing on this team I was highlighting my disability. However, I told Mom that I really wanted to play, and I thought it would be a great opportunity. It turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life! I got to meet many people who are still some of my closest friends today, achieved many accomplishments and awards, the highlight of which is a gold medal in basketball representing NH in the USA Special Olympic games. I got to experience a program that brings out the light in what can be a dark world. If you ever attend a Special Olympics or Unified Sports event it is sure to touch your heart. Although I graduated in 2016, I still volunteer coach for Keene High and continue to be involved with Special Olympics. I am incredibly grateful to be a part of Unified Sports and Spe- cial Olympics.

My name is Diane Langlois and you just finished reading about my son, Ben’s, experience with Special Olympics and Unified Sports. As he men- tioned, I was reluctant to have him join this program; up until that point, Ben had always played sports on traditional teams. However, once Ben became a member of the Unified Basketball team, it took very little time for me to see how wrong I was! It is a truly beautiful program. It is the only sport where you find yourself cheering for both sides. Some players may do little more than kick a ball, or hold a basketball for a few short minutes, but how they shine during that time! The students with disabilities know the feeling of competing at a varsity level, but more than that, it gives them an opportunity to find a place of acceptance during those tough high school years. The benefits of the program go well beyond the playing field or basketball court. Athletes and their non-disabled partners form relationships that carry forward into the larger school environment. I founded The KHS Unified Boosters Club, the organization which the Love for Life Collaborative is supporting, back in 2015 because I want- ed not only to support the coaches, but I also wanted the athletes to experience the full benefit of playing a varsity level sport. The Booster Club funds what the school budget doesn’t. We pay for sports equipment, post-game meals for underprivileged students, and sponsor events like the end of the year bowling banquet. The highlight of my 8-year involvement in this program was providing the entire team with championship sweat- shirts, complete with their last names on the back, to celebrate their 3-peat in basketball. The looks on their faces was priceless and they wore their varsity sweatshirts which such pride! Everyone craves a place in the world where they truly belong. Through Unified Sports, many students like Ben have found that place. I am eternally grateful for the blessings of this great organization.
