INTRODUCTION

DALLIS (Digital And Line Level Interface System) is a very flexible and versatile I/O system that offers a wide choice of different plug-in cards. Each frame may be either 3RU or 6RU in height, and may be remote from the rest of the system. DALLIS 3RU Frame (Example Cards Fitted)

A DALLIS connects to the main system via its central master card; a choice of board types allow connection via MADI, ATM or RAVENNA. A second master card may be fitted for redundancy. The remaining front panel slots can be fitted with a range of local I/O breakout options: Mic/Line, Line, AES, SDI, GPIO, etc. All cards are hot plug-able, with the exception of Phantom Power. The rear of the frame provides access to the main and redundant power supplies, plus alarm and control contacts. The system is designed with resilience in mind, and offers a number of redundancy features: § Internal point-to-point connections – internally, each I/O card connects to the master card(s) in a point-to-point fashion. This means that a single I/O card fault affects only that card, unlike a TDM bus architecture where a fault may disrupt everything connected to the bus. § Passive backplane – the frame backplane is entirely passive. With no active components, this increases reliability. § Hot-swappable Cards & PSUs – all plug-in cards (with the exception of Phantom Power) and power supply units can be hot-swapped without affecting the rest of the system. § Redundant Power Supplies – with main and redundant power supplies, each DALLIS is protected from a PSU failure. § Dual Star Topology – by fitting main and redundant master cards to a DALLIS, and connecting these to different modules within the main system, signal paths can be protected from any single point-of-failure: – Failure of the active physical link: MADI, ATM or RAVENNA. – Malfunction of the active DALLIS master card. – Malfunction of the main system module.

FRAMES

DALLIS frames are designed to be mounted in a 19” rack and come in a choice of heights: 3RU or 6RU. Both variants offer 18 I/O card slots which are single-width in the 3RU and dual-width in the 6RU frame. Note that all available cards can be fitted to either frame; the 3RU frame uses the least amount of rack space when fitting predominantly single-width cards; the 6RU frame is recommended for larger numbers of dual-width cards. Slots M1 and M2 are reserved for the main and redundant master card. 3RU FRAME (940-30) 18 single-width DALLIS I/O card slots. Double width I/O cards (8HP) occupy two slots; single width I/O cards (4HP) occupy one slot.

CABLE DUCT The 940-21 Cable Duct is a 19” Rack, 1RU blind panel with grooves for cables corresponding to the slots of DALLIS frames. It should be fitted below each DALLIS frame, unless using the 940-20 DALLIS Fan Unit for cooling. Note that there is a recessed version (940-26) for recessed DALLIS frames (see next page).

RECESSED FRAMES The following options allow a DALLIS frame to be recessed by 75mm. § 940-28: DALLIS Recess Kit - 3RU Frame. Conversion kit for recessed installation of 940-30. § 940-29: DALLIS Recess Kit - 6RU Frame. Conversion kit for recessed installation of 940-60. § 940-25: DALLIS Recessed Blind Panel, Top. 19", 1RU blind panel to close the gap for non-recessed devices in the rack. To be fitted above the uppermost recessed DALLIS frame. § 940-26: DALLIS Recessed Cable Duct, Middle. Like the 940-21. 19", 1RU blind panel with cable ducting holes to be fitted between two recessed DALLIS frames. § 940-27: DALLIS Recessed Cable Duct, Bottom. Like the 940-21. 19", 1RU blind panel with cable ducting holes to close the gap for non-recessed devices in the rack. To be fitted below the lowest recessed DALLIS frame. FAN UNITS The DALLIS Fan Unit can be used to cool up to three 3RU DALLIS frames. The frames must be placed directly on top of each other. Place the Fan Unit below the DALLIS you wish to cool. For correct airflow, all DALLIS slots must be closed either by a plug-in card or by a blind panel. The space above the uppermost DALLIS frame must not be blocked by cables. The unit comes in standard or recessed frame variants:

PLUG-IN CARDS

All plug-in cards are hot-pluggable. Thus, if a card fails or is replaced, there is no disruption to the rest of the system. (With the exception of a failure or replacement of the Master card if no redundant Master card is fitted.) All plug-in cards include an ACTIVE LED which indicates that the module’s internal control system is booted and running. The ACTIVE LED should blink in time with all other ACTIVE LEDs (at approximately 100Hz). This shows that the card is synchronous to the rest of the system.
