Spoofs and the Politics of the Film Image's Ontology in Tamil Cinema
Spoofs and the Politics of the Film Image’s Ontology in Tamil Cinema * Constantine V. Nakassis All Film Spoofs, No Spoof Films Commercial Tamil cinema has long been a travesty of itself, its textuality woven from so many citational allusions, homages, and self-parodies; and yet, until recently there was no such recognized genre of the spoof film, only “comedy tracks” trailing in the shadows of the grandiose hero and his more serious narrative, parodying his potent image here and there, most often through scenes of comically inverted or failed heroism (Nakassis 2010:209–221). In 2010, this was seen to have changed, with the release of a surfeit of spoof films—Venkat Prabhu’s Goa, Simbudevan’s Irumbu Kottai Mirattu Singam, and, most importantly for this paper, C. S. Amudhan’s aptly titled Thamizh Padam, or ‘Tamil Movie.’1 And then of course, there was that unwitting spoof hero, the self-proclaimed “Power Star,” Dr. S. Srinivasan, who entered the scene in 2011 with his unbel- ievably absurd, yet ambiguously self-serious, film (Lathika) and public persona (figure 1).2 Industry insiders and film enthusiasts often explain this seeming par- adox that Tamil cinema is all spoof with no spoofs by pointing to the self- seriousness of the industry—that is, that it can’t take a joke; or alter- natively by pointing to its cultural and historical particularity—that is, that “spoofs” are a foreign genre. But what is so notable is that the ind- ustry has long made jokes at its own expense. Think, for example, of Nagesh’s memorable comedy track from Sridhar’s classic 1964 romantic comedy Kadhalikka Neeramillai (‘No Time for Love’), which turns on Nagesh’s nascent film production: a parody of the film producer, Nagesh * Constantine V. -

The Role & Larger Meaning of Sakhi in Indian Dance
Field: Dance and Dance Music -Bharata Natyam Period: January 2016 - December 2017. Name: Nandini Krishna Address: 55 Patrakar, Kalanagar, Bandra East, Mumbai 400 051 File No: CCRT/SF-3/100/2015. THE ROLE AND LARGER MEANING OF SAKHI IN INDIAN DANCE 2 Preface: While the sakhī has been a perennial presence right from the Sangam age and the Vedic age even, if we may say so; not much thought has been given to her vital presence or philosophical inferences, if any. Composers down the ages have generally couched deep significances of Indian philosophy and thought within poetic imagery. The sakhī comes out as a very interesting conundrum. How does one infer her presence. While many aver her to be in place of the Guru, many have also argued against that possibility saying then, she would need to be venerated. The prime and living characterisation of the sakhī was clearly seen in Kalidasa‟s „Shakuntala‟ where she assumed a highly important role and meaning. This study was to largely and generally look into the many facets associated with the sakhī. Understanding her presence and meaning through many compositions used in Bharata Natyam and other dance styles was one way that was adopted. While the aim was lofty, I still feel much more can be done to give a more clear analysis and philosophical meaning to her raison d‟etre of existence. This work can thus be deemed to be a starting point. It was a supposition to check whether the sakhī was merely an imaginative idea as conveyed through many dance compositions or whether she could be the mind or the heart or inner conscience. -
Voiceless Heroines: Use of Dubbed Voices in Tamil Movies*
Asian Women March 2017, Vol. 33, No. 1, pp. 73-98 Voiceless Heroines: Use of Dubbed Voices in Tamil Movies* Premalatha Karupiah Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia 1 Abstract Scholars have argued that sound in films has not been given much theoretical attention. Without understanding the use of sound in films, a comprehensive knowledge of the meaning and ideology of movies is not possible. This paper explores how heroines’ voices are presented in Tamil movies and provides empirical evidence about gender inequality in the aural practices of Tamil movies. The data for this study came from a content analysis of 40 Tamil movies produced in India (1961–2012), 8 websites related to voice dubbing in Tamil movies, and 4 YouTube videos. The term “dubbed voice” refers to the practice of using a voice-actor or dubbing artist to deliver the dialogue while someone else acts in the movie. In Tamil movies, this trend has been common since the 1980s among female actors in lead roles but not among lead male actors. Even though the inability to speak Tamil is one of the reasons for this practice, it does not explain why female stars mostly use a dubbed voice. The male actors–including non-native speakers–often use their own voice. The use of a few select dubbing artists to lend their voices to heroines limits the type of female voices heard (from lead roles) in Tamil movies and narrowly defines the types of women’s voices that are associated with someone who is attractive or good. Therefore, Tamil movies are limiting not only the looks that are showcased on the screen but also the female voices heard in these movies. -

It is averred by the plaintiff that they run about 33 channels. http://www.judis.nic.in 2 5. Watching from an Arm's Length: the Foreign Hand in Tamil Cinema
Watching from an Arm’s Length: The Foreign Hand in Tamil Cinema Preeti Mudliar Xerox Research Centre, India [email protected] Joyojeet Pal School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor [email protected] Abstract Scholarly work on Tamil cinema has traditionally focused on the construction of Tamil authenticity. Much of this work portrays the foreignness of the other Indian — particularly the North Indian — but little work exists on the construction of the non-Indian space or person. We argue that quite often films emphasize Tamil authenticity by constructing an othering-type discourse of foreign spaces and their inhabitants, including the Tamil Diaspora. Through an analysis of 90 films and five in-depth interviews, we demonstrate that Tamil film presents an opportunity to understand how an important regional center of Indian cinema both represents the foreign and constructs the Indian Diaspora and its spaces, while differing from the more globally known Hindi-language productions of Bollywood. Keywords: Tamil cinema, Foreign, Other, Diaspora, Bollywood, Indian cinema, Films Watching from an Arm’s Length: The Foreign Hand in Tamil Cinema Hindi films saw a flood of cinematic articulations on the figure of the migrant, the returning migrant, and on foreign geographies post-liberalization in 1991. These economic reforms coincided with the growth of a wealthy western Diaspora, which found its way to the Hindi cinema screen and in turn helped create a niche market, particularly in North America and the UK. With the imagery of upper-class Indians in exotic foreign locations, this phenomenon was an important thematic turn for Hindi cinema.
