ARTICOLI Nota redazionale L’Accademia conosce bene il posto tutto speciale che nella sua vita ten- gono le riviste scientifi che. Esse sono una delle forme più usuali che permettono a ciascun centro di ricerca e di studio di presentare se stesso, di realizzare un luogo di incontro e dibattito, di proporre alcuni dei fi lo- ni della propria produzione ritenuti meritevoli di essere comunicati, per sottoporli al paragone critico della comunità scientifi ca. Talune riviste, come la nostra, hanno da tempo fatto la scelta di realizzare numeri mo- nografi ci: una modalità che, almeno nelle intenzioni, si propone di privi- legiare l’organicità degli interventi e guadagnare in profondità di sguardo quanto si può perdere di attenzione al complesso e variegato mondo dell’indagine sull’uomo, nelle sue diverse articolazioni disciplinari. È noto che il favore ottenuto dal lavoro di una rivista scientifi ca trova uno spazio di verifi ca nel dialogo che essa è in grado di stabilire con altre realtà e con i suoi lettori più fedeli. Un segnale importante è rappresentato dal numero, signifi cativo per quantità e qualità, di articoli ed interventi che, seppure non sollecitati, giungono alla redazione. Non sempre la forma monografi ca dei fascicoli della rivista dà modo di accogliere tali proposte, pur meritevoli di essere pubblicate, non appena per signifi care la gratitudine per la stima e l’interesse attestati, ma soprattutto per lo spessore scientifi co che le caratterizzano. D’altro canto il creare una singolare «lista d’attesa» che permetta di attingere materiali omogenei alle scelte monografi che da questa preziosa riserva di testi, rischia di esporli ad un inevitabile «invecchiamento» che, contrariamente a quanto si dice del vino, per i frutti della ricerca accademica non sempre porta vantaggio. 273 Tutte queste considerazioni stanno alla base della decisione della Redazione di Anthropotes di mutare in parte i criteri di composizione dei propri fascicoli. Dall’annata in corso (2008), il primo continuerà ad essere di struttura monografi ca, mentre il secondo (che qui viene presentato) assumerà un carattere miscellaneo. L’auspicio è che questa nuova impostazione della rivista la renda possibilmente sempre più adeguata alle attese dei suoi lettori, con la speranza di poterne raggiungere di nuovi; contemporaneamente siamo fi duciosi che accogliere in maniera più agevole proposte e contributi di quanti ci seguono con interesse ed impegno, fa ben sperare che si possa ancora ampliare la platea di quanti vorranno collaborare con i frutti del loro lavoro accademico, affi nché questa pubblicazione diventi sempre più internazionale e aperta al dialogo e confronto scientifi co. G.M. 274 Toward understanding the Holy Family of Nazareth as the model of married and family life Perry J. Cahall 1. Introduction On the Feast of the Holy Family in 2002, John Paul II said that the Holy Family of Nazareth is «a wonderful model of human and supernatural virtues for all Christian families», and «we can fi nd in it values and teach- ings which today are more indispensable than ever to give human society sound and stable foundations»1. These words can be seen as an invita- tion to deeper refl ection on the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Reference to the Holy Family as a realistic model for daily family life, however, seems to be lacking in Catholic piety today. John Paul II, “The Christian family: good news,” Angelus Message 29 Dec. 2002, in L’Osservatore Romano (1 Jan. 2003), 6. 275 Perry J. Cahall does play a role in the devotional life of believers, it is often reduced to a sterile image lacking humanity or emotion, and depicting instead a stoic piety. From the perspective of this piety, it is hard to see the Holy Family as a realistic guide to Christian living, as John Paul II proposed. We might also be tempted to ask, how can the Holy Family truly be a guide for all families? After all, what can the average family have in common with a family composed of a child who is truly God and truly human, a mother and wife who is immaculate, and a father and husband who excels in virtue as the “just man”? In contemplating such a family we are contemplating a household in which at least two of the three members are completely untouched by sin. How can this family, which «is a unique phenomenon in the history of the world»2, possibly be a model for other families? If the Holy Family is to serve as a model of married and family life, then Jesus, Mary, and Joseph must be seen as a truly human family founded upon the truly human marriage.
