Malayan Colleges Mindanao PHILIPPINE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION MESSAGE Greetings to all Delegates! The Philippine Historical Association (PHA) has been in the forefront of historical and cultural awareness campaign since 1955. The Association’s annual conferences which are devoted to local history research, its teacher trainings that cater to areas outside Manila, the commemoration of historical events, and other worthwhile activities are all proofs of PHA’s true commitment in preserving our cherished Filipino heritage. Last year, PHA embarked on collaborating with historical societies in Southeast Asian region with the purpose of building friendly and scholarly relations with our Asian neighbors. This resulted in the establishment of the International Council for Historical and Cultural Cooperation-Southeast Asia (ICHCC-SEA). Since August 2015, the ICHCC-SEA members have already convened a series of international fora to strengthen our consciousness of our common Malayan roots as well as to chart our regional direction in preserving our shared heritage. This collaboration brings us to a higher degree of challenge and commitment to a continuing advocacy for scholarly activities. This PHA 2016 national conference is part of this campaign. With the theme Philippine Governance, Historical Perspectives, the PHA is one with our Philippine government especially the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte in finding ways to curb corruption in the government. Through its plenary and parallel sessions, the community will be updated on the past and present studies about issues, problems and possible solutions about graft and corruption. I therefore salute the PHA Board for conceptualizing this theme which is very relevant and timely. I would like to thank Ateneo de Davao for hosting this event and also the other PHA collaborators such as the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Philippine National Historical Commission, Rizal Commercial Barking Corporation, and all private institutions and associations that helped in the realization of this event. Lastly, I would like to thank our PHA members and delegates from different parts of the Philippines as well as those from abroad who came to take part in this conference. God Bless us all.
