en Otago members (five couples) travelled to Tasmania in October. Once in Hobart, we checked into the Quality Hotel, Tafter which the lads went next door to Moto Adventure to pick up our rented motorbikes from Ian who had organised all of our route and accommodation for the next week. One option was then to go for an orientation ride, but we chose coffees followed later by some beers on the pretty waterfront, while the ladies went looking at shops. Nothing new there… For the motorbikes - Ross had a Suzuki 1200 Bandit, Mike a Honda CB500F, Henry a Honda 400, Tim a V-Strom and Hartley a BMW GS1200. There was a good frost when we rode back to NH505 regrouping at the Dhaba in Batal and a briefing of things to come. If last year was anything to go by, this would be a tough day of riding and it didn’t disappoint. However, two of the iconic water crossings viewed by millions on U-Tube had been tamed with culverts. A temporary fix I fear because the first snow melt will fill them full of rubble then they’ll really be something to ponder over. Scattered in strategic places along these mountain routes you find Dhaba. Temporary structures with schist walls and tarpaulin roofs, they spring up over • Resort style accommodation with fully cooked breakfast the brief summer period to be dismantled • Lunch and Dinner for most of the trip before winter buries them under meters • Motorcycle hire (Honda CB500X) of snow. These roadside cafes offer rest • Motorcycle insurance and respite; hot food, hot and cold drinks, • Support vehicle and backup guide water, biscuits, chocolate, Maggi instant • Karel & Howard as your riding buddies noodles, amongst many choices. Some • Sealed roads with tons of sublime corners (no off-road riding) had sleeping quarters for those too weary YOU MEET US IN CHIANG MAI, NORTHERN THAILAND or delayed reluctant to ride through the WHERE THIS INCREDIBLE JOURNEY BEGINS. night; a darkness as black as the inside of a cow and as cold as a witches tit. 2019 DATES While we drank bottled water, we ate 4-16 JULY 2019 13 DAY TRIP NZ$ 4795 (solo rider) the food because in this mountain region 24 JULY - 2 AUG 2019 10 DAY TRIP NZ$ SOLD3695 (soloOUT rider) it is predominantly vegetarian, tasty and filling and just what the doctor ordered. ASK ABOUT OUR PILLION/PARTNER RATES The ginger, lemon and honey tea became my drink of choice. However, I must confess I was hanging out for a Fairlie Bakery’s pork belly and apple pie. We joined the Manali-Leh Highway at MOTORCYCLING Gramphoo The Manali-Leh Hghway takes in the Rohtang Pass, a bit over 3,000m, www.magicmotorcycling.com and this the ‘iconic’ Himalayan road [email protected] many choose to ride when they ‘do the Himalayas’ so traffic volumes increased. Tel: 021 125 9052 With the team taking a breather at Kokhsar, I kept going. I had 36kms of smooth 2-lane blacktop and sweeping bends to the turn-off to my next cornerman duty. This was an opportunity to let the Bullet clear her throat and the little single was happily thumping away.
