The stereotypes of "stepmothers" and "stepsisters" that are part of many Cinderella stories must be carefully addressed. Before you explore any of the versions, including this one, it is imperave to discuss the basic aspects of Cinderella in general with your students. The best way to do so is by using elements of ac=ve par=cipaon. For discussion: Cinderella stories are considered folk tales or fairy tales. Folk tales and fairy tales are legends or stories handed down from generaon to generaon – usually orally. These stories are considered folk tales un=l they are wriEen down…once they are on paper…they are considered fairy tales. Folk tales and fairy tales have common themes that transcend many cultures and olen contain life lessons, global truths and/or explain things that happen in nature. Most folk tales and fairy include the following elements: A beginning – or a “Once upon a =me…” Magic of some sort Royalty or a social hierarchy A wicked character A kind and or thoughpul character who is usually treated badly Goodness rewarded in the end Explore the above elements with students. It is helpful to put up a Cinderella from around the world bulle=n board with sec=ons for each element. Aler you finish with each story…put the Cinderella story name on the board and brainstorm the elements… lis=ng them next to the story. If this is done in grid form…students will easily be able to compare stories. Having a large map and placing colorful pins on the locaon points of the stories as you read is a great visual for students to link the commonali=es of what they are reading to the vastness of the world. Aler you discuss the main Cinderella elements, do the Sentence Sor=ng and From Sentence Sor=ng to Essay Wri=ng ac=vi=es from the instruc=on pages as guided lessons with your students.
