Rethinking Arboreal Heritage for Twenty-First-Century Aotearoa New Zealand
NATURAL MONUMENTS: RETHINKING ARBOREAL HERITAGE FOR TWENTY-FIRST-CENTURY AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND Susette Goldsmith A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2018 ABSTRACT The twenty-first century is imposing significant challenges on nature in general with the arrival of climate change, and on arboreal heritage in particular through pressures for building expansion. This thesis examines the notion of tree heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand at this current point in time and questions what it is, how it comes about, and what values, meanings and understandings and human and non-human forces are at its heart. While the acknowledgement of arboreal heritage can be regarded as the duty of all New Zealanders, its maintenance and protection are most often perceived to be the responsibility of local authorities and heritage practitioners. This study questions the validity of the evaluation methods currently employed in the tree heritage listing process, tree listing itself, and the efficacy of tree protection provisions. The thesis presents a multiple case study of discrete sites of arboreal heritage that are all associated with a single native tree species—karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus). The focus of the case studies is not on the trees themselves, however, but on the ways in which the tree sites fill the heritage roles required of them entailing an examination of the complicated networks of trees, people, events, organisations, policies and politics situated within the case studies, and within arboreal heritage itself. Accordingly, the thesis adopts a critical theoretical perspective, informed by various interpretations of Actor Network Theory and Assemblage Theory, and takes a ‘counter-’approach to the authorised heritage discourse introducing a new notion of an ‘unauthorised arboreal heritage discourse’. -

ABSTRACT Lathyrus species are well placed to meet the increasing global demand for food and animal feed, at the time of climate change. Conservation and sustainable use of the genetic resources of Lathyrus is of significant importance to allow the regain of interest in Lathyrus species in world. A comprehensive global database of Lathyrus species originating from the Mediterranean Basin, Caucasus, Central and West Asia Regions is developed using accessions in major genebanks and information from eight herbaria in Europe. This Global Lathyrus database was used to conduct gap analysis to guide future collecting missions and in situ conservation efforts for 37 priority species. The results showed the highest concentration of Lathyrus priority species in the countries of the Fertile Crescent, France, Italy and Greece. -

Commonly know as ‘New Zealand Rock Lily’ as it is endemic to this country. It grows - as it’s name suggests - in rocky regions where growing conditions are often less than favourable. It is therefore an ideal solution for dry, shaded sites on slopes or beneath trees - infact most places that are a challenge may be overcome with this attractive and tough contender. Mass plant in difficult sites or create a bright habitat in low light areas using just green, silver and whites by pairing up with other shade loving ornamentals such as Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’, Iberis ‘Winter Glow’, Lamium ‘Snow and Frost’ and the beautiful Hellebore ‘Ivory Prince’.. -

Here we explored patterns of phylogenetic and non-phylogenetic plant endemism in a Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot. We hypothesized that areas with wet and equable climatic conditions would be prone to long-term persist- ence of endemic lineages (palaeoendemism), whilst areas of recent local speciation (neoendemism) would be more related to harsher environmental conditions and to high topographical relief promoting speciation. Methods We focused on the Baetic–Rifan biodiversity hotspot (southern Iberian Peninsula and northern Morocco) in combination with molecular phylogenetic information and relative phylogenetic endemism (RPE), a recent phylogenetic measure of endemism, allowing us to discern centres of palaeo- from those of neoendemism. Using eco-geographical regions as study units, we explored correlations between both RPE and endemic species richness with precipitation- and temperature-related variables and with elevation range. -

Genetic Engineering of Populus Deltoides for Arsenic Phytoremediation and the Establishment of an in Vitro Propagation Syst
GENETIC ENGINEERING OF POPULUS DELTOIDES FOR ARSENIC PHYTOREMEDIATION AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN IN VITRO PROPAGATION SYSTEM FOR SALIX NIGRA by AMPARO LIMA (Under the Direction of Scott Arthur Merkle) ABSTRACT Arsenic pollution is an environmental problem affecting the health of millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, conventional remediation technologies for this toxic pollutant are costly and environmentally destructive. An alternative to conventional remediation methods is phytoremediation, the use of plants to extract pollutants from contaminated soil, water and air. Recent studies demonstrated that increasing the thiol- sinks in transgenic plants by over-expressing the bacterial γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase gene resulted in a higher tolerance and accumulation of arsenic. To further explore the potential of transgenic plants to remove arsenate from polluted soil, we genetically engineered eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides) trees to over-express γ-ECS and, we also established an in vitro propagation system for another phytoremediation candidate, Salix nigra. Our results show that eastern cottonwood trees over-expressing the γ-ECS gene were able to grow normally on toxic levels of arsenate. We also established an in vitro regeneration system for Salix nigra from immature inflorescence explants. INDEX WORDS: Phytoremediation, arsenate, γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase. Revision Del Genero Asparagus (Liliaceae) En Macaronesia

Se revisan las especies de Asparagus de Macaronesia (Archipiélagos de Azores, Madera, Salvajes, Canarias y Cabo Verde). Se reconocen 10 especies, siete de las cuales son endémicas de la región. Para cada especie se indica el nombre correcto y sinonimias comprobadas, descripción, tipo (cuando ha sido posible encontrarlo) y loca- lidades estudiadas. Se propone la siguiente nueva combinación: A. umbellatus subsp. lowei (Kunth) Valdés, endémico de Madera. Summary. In this paper the species of Asparagus found on the islands of Macaro- nesia (Madeira, Selvagens, Canary Islands, the Azores and the Cape Verde Islands) are revised. 10 species are recognised for Macaronesia, all but three being endemic to the region. A key to the species is given, together with the correct name, synonymy, des- cription, type, distribution and list of localities. The following new combination is made: A. umbellatus subsp. lowei (Kunth) Valdés, endemic to Madeira. INTRODUCCION Esta revisión se emprendió inicialmente como una contribución a la Flora of Macaronesia (véase Taxon, 21: 730-731, 1972), y abarca por tanto todos los taxones de los archipiélagos de Azores, Madera, Salvajes, Canarias y Cabo Verde. Dado el retraso de dicha Flora, se ha pensado que la publicación de un estudio de conjunto de las especies de Macaronesia podría ser de utili- dad, ya que salvo 10s catálogos de ERIKSON & al. (1974) y HANSEN & SUNDING (1979), generales para dicha región, no existen para la misma sino estudios locales de determinadas islas o archipiélagos, en que se tratan parcialmente las especies de este género.
