Wine in Andalusia has come a long way since 1100 BC when the Phoenicians first planted their vineyards in the fertile lands of Cadiz. By Roman times, wine was being produced in Andalusia in a big way and interestingly enough, this continued through Moorish times; despite the fact that the Koran frowns on the consumption of alcohol, some found creative ways to interpret the Koran’s words on wine, providing some justification such as medicinal purposes. From the 15th century onwards, Andalusian wines were shipped to appreciative drinkers elsewhere in Europe, particularly England, where there was a great fondness for Sack (as Sherry was called then) and sweet wines from Malaga. This happy situation prevailed until the 19th century when European vineyards were affected by the Oidium fungus (Powdery Mildew), followed by an even more devastating plague of Phylloxera (American vine root louse) which first appeared in Bordeaux in 1868 and spread to South Spain 20 years later. As a result, vineyards were replanted with plague-resistant American rootstock, while some, sadly, never fully recovered... From the historic sherries of Jerez, to the up-and-coming new vineyards in Ronda and Granada province, Andalusia boasts numerous top-quality wines. MONTSANT INFORMATION DOSSIER INTRODUCTION The D.O. Montsant (Designation of Origin or wine appellation), despite being a recently created wine appellation, has years of wine-making history to its name. Wine experts and press consider it to be an up and coming region and prestigious magazines such as “The Wine Spectator” have declared it to be “a great discovery”. The quality of Montsant wines is key to their success, as too is their great value for money. The prestigious Spanish wine guide, “Guia Peñin” agrees that “the quality of Montsant wines and their great prices make this region an excellent alternative.” In the United States, “Wine & Spirits” magazine have stated that “Montsant should be watched with interest”. Montsant wines appear in some of the most prestigious wine rankings in the World and they always tend to be the best priced amongst their rivals at the top of the list. Many wineries are co-operatives with important social bases and the winemakers who make Montsant wines are often under 40 years old. COMMUNICATING THE APPROVAL OF A STANDARD AMENDMENT ‘Coteaux de Saumur’ PDO-FR-A0179-AM01 Date of communication: 13 November 2019 DESCRIPTION OF AND REASONS FOR THE APPROVED AMENDMENT 1. Geographical name ‘Supplementary geographical name’ has been reduced to ‘geographical name’ in Chapter I points II and XII(2)(b). A number of the product specifications for Loire Valley wines allow the use of what is known as the ‘eponymous geographical designation’ — ‘Val de Loire’ — to refer to this wider region. The use of this term on wine labels is subject to specific rules laid down in those product specifications. As the term ‘supplementary geographical name’ is also used in some cases to denote smaller geographical units with more restrictive production conditions, the word ‘supplementary’ has been removed in order to prevent confusion. Point 9 of the Single Document, ‘Further conditions’, has been amended accordingly. 2.
