She was joining the other members of the first American delegation to the United Nations (UN) on their voyage to London. It was a sudden change of direction for her. She planned to remain at Hyde Park to write, lecture, and collaborate with candidates and organizations she respected. Although she told the press in April that "the story is over," she later told friends that it felt "wonderful to be free" and looked forward to saying "exactly what [she] thought." Meanwhile, President Harry S. Truman, who wanted to capitalize on ER's popularity with African American voters, asked Secretary of State James Byrnes "to find a place for her in foreign affairs." In December, the president telephoned ER to ask her to join the delegation, upon Byrnes's recommendation.
