The day started with a very early alarm clock, as all players needed to travel down to Taunton by 9.00am for a team warm up/practise session. The team, captained by Scott Holland, faced last year’s runners up Devon in their first match who were clearly up for revenge after Dorset achieved one better than them in 2016. We ended up losing to them in a tough well fought battle. After that we went on a phenomenal run and winning streak beating Somerset, Cornwall and the Channel Islands to pick up the silver medals. All the team had a fantastic day, competed brilliantly and clearly had loads of fun being involved in a team environment. Summer County Cup – 24th to 28th July 2017 The men’s team had a gruelling week in West Worthing where they faced North of Scotland, Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Placings were very close and even though the team won 2 matches and had a better rubber count than 3rd and 4th place (only 1 rubber different with 2nd place), Dorset found themselves coming 5th and relegated. A sad end to a very promising week for the team. A full report by Rich Irwin, Captain can be found on the TennisDorset website : http://tennisdorset.org.uk/news/2570/ The ladies team, captained by Emma Bennett, were in Cheltenham and were up against teams from North of Scotland, Gloucestershire, Bedfordshire and Hereford & Worcestershire. A tough week also for the ladies who came 5th and will also be relegated. Both teams are now looking forward to Winter County Cup, 24th to 26th November. CONGRATULATIONS TO………………………………………. DORSET COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 The Dorset County Championships, sponsored by Liverpool Victoria, took place at The West Hants Club, 27th August to 1st September. A great week with most matches being played on the clay courts despite a very wet Wednesday! Finals Day saw some very exciting matches with presentations made to the winners and runners-up by Katherine Hart from Liverpool Victoria and John Feaver, Dorset LTA President. Ideally located on the Dorset and Somerset border, nestling in green valleys and wooded hills, it has excellent transport links to both business and leisure destinations. The town is characterised by an abundance of medieval buildings, the superb Abbey, world-famous schools, a picturesque almshouse, two castles and a Capability Brown lake. Sherborne has a busy business and market centre serving a wide area. It still retains small and specialist Sherborne Town businesses and has a delightful shopping centre with a large choice of handcrafted goods and elegant fashions. It has also become an important town in the region for art and antique dealers. The annual Sherborne Abbey Festival held its first concert in May 2000, and the festival has been held each year since as a four- or five-day event based around the liturgy and its music. The festival is run by volunteers and brings high quality classical events to the town. Any profits made are used to fund future festivals and to promote music within the Parish of Sherborne. The Old Castle, Sherborne Sherborne can lay claim to being the prettiest small town in Dorset.
