I explore the role of the Stoic theory of passions in Seneca’s writing and situate him within Stoic theory. I explore how Medea and Thyestes reflect his vision of anger communicated in De Ira and De Clementia by treating his protagonists as case-studies of individuals with extreme anger to assess whether they could be improved by Stoicism. Chapter One situates Seneca within the Stoic theory of passions by considering how he responds to his predecessors, how he follows orthodox doctrines, how he was influenced by later thinkers and where he advances philosophical doctrines. Chapter Two analyses anger in De Ira and De Clementia and compares Stoic perceptions with those of Aristotle and the Epicureans and compares its presentation in Seneca’s prose and dramas. Chapter Three considers how to extirpate anger according to the advice offered in Seneca’s moral essays. It traces the techniques’ origins, considering whether they are philosophical, depend on Stoic doctrines, if they are practical solutions or a combination. I critique their feasibility as remedies for passions. Chapter Four presents the Stoic elements pertinent to passions in the selected plays. It explores the anti-Stoic interpretation of Senecan drama, the reasons for philosophy’s prevalence and how his drama reflects his moral theory. Chapter Five asks whether Medea and Atreus reflect a Stoic perspective and how they would benefit by adopting a philosophical outlook. It considers possible audience responses and identifies potential ‘cures’ and whether the characters attempt to address their anger. In conclusion, I accept Seneca’s account of anger and deduce that practising Stoic techniques can help remove anger. References denoted numerically in brackets without an accompanying title are passages of De Ira. 6 ‘Wrestling anger: An investigation into Seneca’s approach to the management of passion through Stoic philosophy’ Introduction The principal research questions The central questions of my research relate to the nature of passions and how they can be managed through practising Stoic philosophy, according to Seneca’s presentation of the School’s doctrines. The purpose of focusing on anger specifically is to apply its presentation in Seneca to advance current understanding of the established Stoic theory of the passions. Anger is the primary focus because it is the most severe and destructive passion and its catastrophic consequences mean that it particularly requires attention to prevent it from arising. By examining the worst type of emotional problem, it is possible to analyse the usefulness of philosophy against its most difficult challenge. With a particular interest in Stoic philosophy, as well as being a politician, moral advisor and author, Seneca provides insight into Stoicism and other philosophical schools’ views about how to live well, a goal he actively strove to achieve, and persuasively encourages his readers to do the same.1 I focus on the Stoic elements of Seneca’s arguments because these best illustrate how Stoicism offers cures for the problem of passions, though reference to his relationship with other thinkers is relevant to complete the picture of his beliefs about anger. Seneca is recognised for his literary ability across many genres. Through his prolific writing he manages to combine his philosophical interests and wish to entertain by incorporating subtle moral suggestions in his plays when he includes Stoic themes in his dramas. His adaptability enables him to appeal to a larger audience than those who read his prose work, including those who observe and read his plays. 1 Cf. Veyne (2003) pp. 5-9. 7 Seneca’s De Ira, a prose work dedicated to anger, forms the foundation of my research regarding ira’s nature and management and detailed analysis of this text is provided in Chapter Two in preparation for further discussion. References to this topic found in his other works will help to complete Seneca’s picture of anger. I draw on elements of De Clementia because ira is an alternative (and inappropriate) response compared to clementia. Where appropriate, I reference the Epistles for insights into the nature of passions and advice about they can be managed, as well as using Seneca’s letters as evidence of Stoic ethical theory. Regarding terminology, Cicero admitted to having problems translating the Greek pathē and concluded that the most appropriate Latin word is perturbationes (cf. Cic. Tusc. 3.7; Cic. Fin. 3.35). Seneca chooses the term passions or adfectus (cf. 1.1.1, 1.1.7, 1.3.6) as they are something from which people ‘suffer’ and they are a vice or vitium (cf. 1.1.5, 1.3.7). I believe that this is captured in the English translation of adfectus as ‘passions’ in preference to ‘emotions’.2 My research enquires into the role of the Stoic theory of passions in Seneca’s writing and through a detailed investigation of the role played by Stoic ideas in the plays Medea and Thyestes, I will explore the extent to which the tragedies are illustrations of his presentation of anger communicated in De Ira. I examine why and how Seneca uses different methods to convey similar philosophical messages in his violent dramas and his more considered moral essays and Epistles. Studying these texts enables a clearer understanding of the battle with passions and aims to consider how their problems can be resolved. I analyse the presence of the psychology of passions in the tragedies Medea and Thyestes and have chosen these plays because the protagonists display anger in its extreme state when they take revenge by murdering their enemies’ children. There are other characters in Seneca’s plays which embody similar characteristics and attitudes towards anger such as Clytemnestra in Agamemnon, Juno in the prologue to Hercules Furens, Achilles and Pyrrhus in the Troades, 2 Translations of ‘pathē/adfectus’ vary amongst scholars between the use of ‘emotion’ and ‘passions’. For example, ‘emotion’ is used by Brennan (2003, 2006) pp. 257ff. and Konstan (2015), whereas Inwood (2005, 2008) and Asmis (2015) choose ‘passions’. 8 Theseus' curse in Phaedra (Phaed. lines 947, 1207), the sibling feud in Phoenissae and Oedipus in Oedipus. However, these plays will not be included in my discussion because the sustained anger of Medea and Atreus and the extreme consequences of their ira best provide appropriate case studies for the exploration of this passion. I question the extent to which Seneca’s tragic characters in Medea and Thyestes display Stoic sympathies and how they would benefit from adopting a philosophical approach. I analyse Medea and Atreus as if they were case studies of real people with severe emotional problems rather than fictitious dramatic devices, examining any evidence of potential cognitive and behavioural improvement in order to establish whether the characters do or should take steps to cure their anger. In this way I can assess whether, if the characters behaved in this way in the real world, they could be reformed through the application of the techniques recommended by Seneca in De Ira, with particular attention to their Stoic elements. This methodology, in effect treating Seneca’s characters as exempla, will enable the use of Medea and Atreus as instances of how not to behave and how their examples could generate reflection in an audience to motivate self- improvement.3 The purpose of these questions is to assist in improving modern understanding about Seneca’s project of educating his audience and readers in virtue and vice.

    NOTES ON SENECA’S TROJAN WOMEN FOR VCE STUDENTS Betty Gabriel-Jones Seneca’s Trojan Women, is, like most of his plays, modelled on a Greek original, Eurip- ides’ Women of Troy. However, he brings a distinctly Roman attitude to his plays, an attitude no doubt at least partly formed by a life led in and around the courts of the Julio-Claudian emperors. Seneca thrived under Tiberius, fell out of favour with Caligula, returned to Rome on Caligula’s death, was exiled by Claudius, then recalled, became influential at the court of Nero (indeed was probably the second most powerful man in Rome, after the emperor) and was eventually sentenced to death by Nero. This eventful and, one assumes, stressful life surely played a part in his somewhat pessimistic view of life. It is hard to see how this could not be the case. After all, his protégé, Nero, murdered his own stepbrother, his stepsister/wife and his mother Agrippina. His second wife, whom he supposedly loved, he kicked to death in a drunken rage. Witnessing such events, even if one were not involved, would not lead one to see life as a sunny, cheerful affair. And Seneca was not uninvolved. He was no innocent, and may even have condoned the killing of Agrippina; certainly he composed a speech for Nero in which he justified his action. In addition to all this, Seneca lived in a Rome where bloody and murderous games were the staple entertainment of the masses. By philosophy, Seneca was a stoic—that is to say, he advised a life designed around ra- tional behaviour, modesty, and discipline.

    Commentary on Englert Martha Nussbaum I admire Englert's paper. I find its major conclusions entirely convincing: (1) the analysis of the difference between Epicurean and Stoic attitudes to suicide; (2) the account of the original Stoic position; (3) the argument that Seneca is an orthodox Stoic about suicide; and (4) the very interesting claims about the role of dif- ferent sorts of freedom in Seneca's arguments. Although I am persuaded by his analysis, I am inclined to be somewhat more critical of the Stoic position than he seems inclined to be: for I think that in a crucial way it is internally incoherent. In what follows, therefore, I want to focus on a problem in the Stoic account itself, with respect to the ambivalence the suicide theory reveals toward the importance of externals. I shall do this by focusing on one line of argument leading to suicide, in Seneca's De Ira.l 1. The Stoics famously hold that only virtue is worth choosing for its own sake. And virtue all by itself suffices for a complete- ly fulfilled and fulfilling human life, that is, for eudaimonia. Virtue is something unaffected by external contingency—both, apparently, as to its acquisition and as to its maintenance once acquired? Items that are not fully under the control of the 1.     166 BOOK REVIEWS Gretchen Reydams-Schils, The Roman Stoics: Self, Responsibility and Affection. Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 2005. xii + 210 pp. ISBN 0-226-30837-5. In the third book of the Histones Tacitus presents us with the ludicrous picture of a Stoic philosopher mingling with the soldiers of the Flavian army as it prepares to invade the city, and preaching unheeded the blessings of peace and the dangers of war (3.81). The purveyor of this intempestiva sapientia was Musonius Rufus, an eques Romanus, a friend of many Roman senators, a political exile, and the hero of this book. The author sets out to prove that the Roman Stoics adapted originally Greek Stoic doctrine to emphasize the importance of social responsibility and social engagement to the life of virtue. Stoicism, for all its emphasis on self-sufficiency, independence of outer circumstances, and spiritual self-improvement, saw the instinct for sociability as implanted by divine providence in human beings, who were imbedded in a society of rational beings comprising men and gods. What the author thinks was the distinctive contribution of the Roman Stoics was to retrieve for the life of virtue the traditional relationships of parenthood and marriage that Plato and the Cynics had tried to denigrate. It is therefore not the Musonius Rufus of Roman politics that interests her, but the advocate of marriage as a union of body and soul between equals and the opponent of infanticide and child exposure. The structure of the book reflects this emphasis, for it ‘reverses the Stoic progression from self to god and universe’ (5).

    STOICISM AND THE VIRTUE OF TOLERATION John Lombardini1 Abstract: This article argues that the Stoics possessed a conception of toleration as a personal and social virtue. In contrast with previous scholarship, I argue that such a conception of toleration only emerges as a product of the novel conceptions of the vir- tue of endurance offered by Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. The first section provides a survey of the Stoic conception of endurance in order to demonstrate how the distinc- tive treatments of endurance in Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius merit classification of a conception of toleration; the second section offers a brief reconstruction of the argu- ments for toleration in the Meditations. Introduction In his history of the concept of toleration, Rainer Forst identifies its earliest articulation with the use of tolerantia in Stoic philosophy. Though the word tolerantia first occurs in Cicero, it is used to explicate Stoic doctrine. In the Paradoxa Stoicorum, Cicero identifies the tolerantia fortunae (the endurance of what befalls one) as a virtue characteristic of the sage, and connects it with a contempt for human affairs (rerum humanarum contemptione);2 in De Finibus, endurance (toleratio) is contrasted with Epicurus’ maxim that severe pain is brief while long-lasting pain is light as a truer method for dealing with pain.3 Seneca, in his Epistulae Morales, also identifies tolerantia as a virtue, defending it as such against those Stoics who maintain that a strong endurance (fortem tolerantiam) is undesirable, and linking it

My dissertation examines the literary manifestation of Stoicism’s legacy, in particular regarding the institution and danger of autonomy, the foundation and limitation of virtue, the nature of the passions, the difference between good and evil, and the referentiality of language. Alongside the standard satirical responses to the ancient creed’s rigor and rationalism, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century poetry, drama, and prose developed Stoic formulations that made the most demanding of philosophical ideals tenable within the framework of common experience. Instead of serving as hallmarks for hypocrisy, the literary stoics I investigate uphold a brand of stoicism fit for the post-regicidal, post- Protestant Reformation, post-scientific revolutionary world. My project reveals how writers used Stoicism to determine the viability of philosophical precept and establish ways of compensating for human fallibility. The ambivalent status of the Stoic sage, staged and restaged in countless texts, exemplified the period’s anxiety about measuring up to its ideals, its efforts to discover the plenitude of ii natural laws and to live by them.

AUGUSTINE'S CRITICISMS OF THE STOIC THEORY OF PASSIONS T.H.Irwin Augustine defends three claims about the passions: (1) The Stoic position dif­ fers only verbally from the Platonic-Aristotelian position. (2) The Stoic position is wrong and the Platonic-Aristotelian position is right. (3) The will is engaged in the different passions; indeed the different passions are different expressions of the will. The first two claims, properly understood, are defensible. But the most plausible versions of them give us good reason to doubt the third claim. 1. A full exploration of Augustine's reflexions on the nature of the passions would introduce us to some of his central moral and theological concems. I do not intend to undertake this full exploration. I want to discuss his claim about the proper interpretation of the Stoic conception of the passions in relation to the Platonic and Aristotelian view.
