Edinburgh, 28th April 2014 Elisabeth Anita Möckli 1 ABSTRACT In its function as a mediating body between the political decision-makers and the population, the media have the potential to influence the public opinion and subsequently, policy making. Representations of political discourses are opinion-shaping instruments and often not mere reflections of a given reality; they incorporate implicit and explicit, conscious and unconscious evaluations. In cross-cultural contexts where information travels across languages the media are highly dependent on translation. Despite its central role, media translation as part of the political process has only recently gained visibility in Translation Studies (TS) and remains widely neglected outside the discipline. Current research in TS often prioritises either the textual analysis or, more recently, the identification of the shaping factors in the news production process, and often fails to address diachronic aspects. This thesis investigates the translations of Goebbels’ speeches as published in the French and British press during the interwar period. It combines a synchronic and diachronic textual analysis, inspired by CDA with an in-depth study of context which draws on socio-historical research and the analysis of archival material. Thereby, the thesis is able to link the textual makeup to a wide variety of socio-political and historical variables via the concepts of ‘framing’ and ‘agenda-setting’. In doing so the thesis demonstrates on the one hand, how translation can function as a means of discourse mediation and, on the other hand, it provides evidence that ideology and political expediency alone cannot explain all textual changes introduced by the translator-journalists. Moreover, describing the development of the media images not only allows to add a translational perspective to the reception of the Third Reich but also contributes to a better understanding of the varying influence of contextual factors. The results of the diachronic analysis show that throughout the interwar period the British media published very little about Goebbels and, up until late in 1938, reports focused on the peaceful intentions he expressed. In contrast, Goebbels was frequently reported on in France and the regime was early on represented as an aggressor. Whilst trends in the quantity mirror the differing economic conditions of the newspaper markets, the quality, i.e. the actual realisation, of the media images seems to be a reflection of the differing socio-political positions of France and the United Kingdom after WW1. The development of the images clearly illustrates that the political ideology of appeasement was finally overridden in the UK in 1938 when political expediency forced the government to take a different course of action. However, the study of the editorial correspondence of the Manchester Guardian brings to light that the mosaic of factors influencing the news production process is more complex. The intervention of the involved governments, personal convictions of the foreign correspondents and the editors, spatial and temporal restrictions, issues of credibility, etc. all impacted on the particular make-up of the media texts. The synchronic textual analysis, on the other hand, reveals that the range of framing devices through which the media images were established was largely determined by text type conventions. The strategies applied range from selective- appropriation of text, repositioning of actors and labelling, to audience representation. The analysis clearly demonstrates that intersemiotic translation, i.e. the representation of the speech context, is equally important as inter- and intra-lingual instances of translation. 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This winter I received a letter from my 92 year old grandmother that ended with the words: “I hope I will still be around to congratulate you on your degree”. When Sports Conquered the Republic: A Forgotten Chapter From the «Roaring Twenties.» Abstract After the First World War, sport experienced an astonishing growth in the successor states to the two empires of central Europe, a growth which can only be explained sociologically in terms of the general character of the twentieth century as a «physical century.» Furthermore, the intellectual climate of the times as well as the psychic state of the freshly-hatched Republicans plays a special role. That is, the enormous fascination with the «Moloch of sport» can be explained on the one hand by a non-intellectual worshipping of purely physical, measurable maximum achievements (record-mania), on the other by the America-cult that arose during this period (identical with the positive myth of technology, the cult of machines that replaced the pre-war view).

For instance, in his work Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler demonstrated virulent antisemitism by portraying the Jew as a parasitic being that corrupts others. As parasites, Hitler believed that Jews are “people without any true culture, especially their own.”1 This disdain for the Jews manifested itself in many hateful laws and acts. one of the most important being the strategy of Arisierung (Aryanization), which began in 1933. The process of Aryanization, according to Roderick Stackelberg and Sally A. Winkle, largely refers to the process of confiscating and selling off of Jewish property.2 However, Aryanization also encompassed the process of the removal everything that was Jewish or perceived to have Jewish influence from Germany. Besides the confiscation of Jewish property, the process of Aryanization included, but was not limited to: the destruction of Jewish books in book burnings, the exclusion of Jews from participating in national sports teams, and the the removal from Jews from the civil service and professions, the ban on Jews performing German music, and many other laws that seeped into every aspect of German society and culture during the Third Reich.

In the Nazis’ paranoid conspiracy theory “Jewry” comprised powers behind the scenes in London, Moscow, and Washington. In response to the “war of extermination” that Jewry had supposedly launched against Germany, the Nazi leadership publicly threatened to “exterminate” and “annihilate” the Jews as an act of justified retaliation. In their minds and in their policy, the ideological connection between the “Final Solution” and the Second World War was inherent, rather than con- tingent. The following analysis suggests why a centuries-old hatred led to mass murder between 1941 and 1945. In 1975 Lucy Dawidowicz argued in The War against the Jews, 1933–1945 that historians of that period needed to pay attention to a second war waged by the Nazi regime.1 Dawidowicz called for incorporating the history of what soon was generally known as the Holocaust into general histories of the period. In the following two decades, with some exceptions, two scholarly communities emerged, one focused on conventional battlefield narratives—of Pearl Harbor, Stalingrad, D-Day—and another on the Holocaust: the Wannsee Conference, the Warsaw and other ghettos, the extermina- tion camps.

    Total Gamification Mathias Fuchs When a former US vice president calls games “normal”, it is most likely that the medium he is talking about has lost its innocence. Al Gore’s statement that “games are the new normal” (2011) indicates that the early days when games were new and nice, harmless, or neat and niche, are gone. Games have had their coming of age and the days of ludic infancy are long since past. Through the maturation of games as a medium, we have realised they can serve a purpose and have lost their naïveté. Games can simulate battlefields, games can predict disaster, they can increase profit, and they can crunch markets. On their way to maturity games have lost their enchanting non­intentionality. The original naïveté of being good for nothing but play has vanished into thin air. It has, however, been replaced by a second order naïveté: the interests of games are no longer challenged.1 Nobody would call a game “corrupted” (Caillois 1958) if money was involved in the gameplay. There are also no taboo areas for gaming. Gaming scenarios include warfare, pornography, financial transactions, espionage and counter­espionage, theft and antisocial behaviour. Welcome to the days of total gamification! What we experience today is a diversity of play and the ubiquity of games, making them not only a popular medium but also a key medium and probably the leading medium of contemporary society. The coverage of games across media sectors and social niches also makes them a super­medium, a medium that can easily adopt the styles and modes of predecessor media.

In particular the war against Russia not only was a monumental undertaking for the Nazi State in terms of economic and military resources, but also the invasion included an inherent all or nothing attitude for the future of National Socialism. Russia tempted Germany with land, natural resources, and possibly an end to Bolshevism and Judaism. Southern Russia looked particularly ripe for Hitler as he focused on gaining control of the lucrative grain and oilfields in the Caucuses. A total victory in Russia also spelled out the demise of the Jews and Communists, as Hitler believed Judaism and Bolshevism were intertwined and the extermination of both would allow the Aryan race and ethnic Germans to assert their supremacy.
