NEWSLETTER Parishes of St Anthony of Padua, Onchan; St Joseph, Willaston; St Mary of the Isle, Douglas Tel 01624 675509 Email [email protected] Website www.manxcatholic.org 4th Sunday of Easter, 12th May, 2019 Mass page 268, Readings year ‘C’ Dear Parishioners, This weekend we have a visit from Matt Jeziorski, the Archdiocesan Synod 2020 Coordinator. Over the last few months we have been praying to the Holy Spirit in the words of our Synod 2020 prayer: ‘Help us to become the Church you are calling us to be’. Matt is over to lead a training session with the Island’s Synod members as we formally begin the next phase of Synod preparation. In coming weeks Synod members will be approaching members of our community (and beyond) to encourage you to respond to the four questions of the Synod Questionnaire. These questions are as follows.: 1. Where in your everyday life do you experience love, truth, goodness, hope, and joy? 2. When you reflect on your life now, and as you look to the future, what causes you concern or worry? 3. What is the purpose of the Catholic Church in the world today? 4. Having reflected on these things, what are the topics you would like to see on the agenda of Synod 2020? These questions begin from the truth that God speaks to us in our everyday lives and, as we reflect on our lives, we encounter Christ (c.f. Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium 8). We are invited to think about what the Catholic Church is for. This will allow the Spirit of God to open our hearts so that, finally, we can reflect on the questions, issues, and topics on which our Synod should make recommendations. We are all invited to reflect deeply and respond to the four Synod Questions. Listening will be done through the Synod online survey, focus groups facilitated by Fr Peter McGrail at Liverpool Hope University, and by Synod Members in our local communities. It is through this great project of listening that we will begin to discern the Church God is calling us to be. Why not visit our online survey on https//://synod2020.co.uk/resources/survey. Let your voice be heard! This week I shall be away on a Diocesan Clergy Retreat. I’ll be glad of a rest. We are grateful to Monsignor Stephen Alker who has kindly agreed to celebrate the 12.10 weekday Mass at St Mary’s in my absence. Monsignor Stephen, formally Principal RC Chaplain in the British Army, is no stranger to the Isle of Man. Date: 27th October 2020 Isle of Man Post Office Issues The Story of the Nativity on Christmas Stamps 2020 6 Stamps Share a Collection of Beautifully Presented Artworks Depicting the Religious Story of the Nativity This year’s Isle of Man Post Office Christmas stamps, issued on 30 October, feature scenes and artworks inspired by the story of the Nativity. 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral Isle of Man. It is the cathedral church of the Church of England Diocese of Sodor and Man and was made a cathedral by Act of Tynwald in 1980. To commemorate this anniversary the Right Reverend Peter Eagles, Bishop of Sodor and Man kindly provided the issue text for this beautiful stamp collection. Issue Text Author the Rt Revd PA Eagles, Bishop of Sodor and Man, said: "These delightful Christmas stamps point to light and hope. The angel speaks of God’s presence in the world, and the simple shepherds are drawn to God’s light and love. Three Kings worship, representing the nations of the world. The light shines in the darkness, and the Mother cradles the Child in profoundest love. The eternal message of Christmas speaks to us today in these six beautiful designs." Nigel Godfrey, Dean of Cathedral Isle of Man, said: ‘It is good to have a stamp issue released on the 40th birthday of the Island’s Cathedral. The Cathedral was actually built a 100 years earlier to replace the ruined one on St Patrick’s Isle, but the driving force behind it - Bishop Rowley Hill died in office before the necessary legislation was passed by Tynwald, so it simply remained a parish church.

Welcome to Tynwald Day The Midsummer sitting of Tynwald Court at St John’s is a ceremony with origins more than a thousand years old. Its central feature is the promulgation and captioning of new Acts of Tynwald, which is the final stage in the Manx legislative process. The ceremony is in three parts. It begins in the Royal Chapel with a service of worship at 11am. Then the Members of Tynwald and other participants move to Tynwald Hill where the Acts are promulgated and any petitions are brought forward. Finally, the Court returns to the Royal Chapel where the Acts are captioned.
