EVENTS: Elsies River Archdeaconry Retreat PRAYER… Prayer is speaking and listening to God and desiring to be united with God and to do his will. If you already pray regularly, pray especially that God will increase your faith. Pray that God will help you to know his Catholic Church more fully, that he will guide you and show you the truth. Pray that God will give you the strength to follow that truth. If you don't pray regularly, then do try to. Nothing happens without prayer. Pray anytime, pray anywhere - pray right now if you can. Talk to God in your own words. If you don't know how to start, say slowly any prayers that you know off by heart, like the Lord's Prayer. It doesn't matter how self-conscious or stupid or empty you feel. It doesn't matter what terrible things you've done, or how little you believe in God. Start by asking him to help you to pray; say thank you for the good things in your life - however small; say sorry for the things you know you've done wrong; ask God to help you in all your needs, in all your difficulties; ask him to help those you love; tell him that you love him, that you trust him, even if you don't feel that you do; ask him to increase your faith. Try to pray regularly, at least every day when you get up and when you go to bed, even if it's only for two minutes. More than anything else - be honest with God, he doesn't want us to pretend that we are someone else; he loves us just as we are. If we pray, and if we try to do what we know is right, then God will give us everything that we need. He will guide us and bring us to share in his own glorious life, united with his Son Jesus Christ, in the unity of his Holy Spirit - now, in this world, and in the unending joy of heaven.     A SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS (Figures in parenthesis refer to paragraphs of the Report dealing with these issues). General Synod 1. The overall size of the General Synod should be in the region of 470 to 480. (14-21) 2. The current formula for calculating the number of elected proctors and lay members should remain. (20) 3. The balance of elected proctors and lay members between the two provinces should be moved from 68/32 to 70/30. (21) 4. The representation of suffragan bishops should be seven (four from Canterbury and three from York). (22-23) 5. When a See is vacant, and provided that a suffragan bishop from that diocese is not already an elected member of the Synod, the bishop charged with responsibility for the diocese during the vacancy should be entitled to attend and speak, but not vote. (24-26) 6. Majority: There should be new special constituencies for archdeacons of eight from Canterbury and four from York, to be elected from all archdeacons in the respective provinces. (32-40) 7. There should be a national constituency for cathedral deans of five. (41-42) 8. Majority : The electorate for proctorial elections to the General Synod should be expanded to include clergy with permission to officiate (who would substantially comprise retired clergy) elected to a diocesan synod, who should also be eligible to stand for election to the General Synod. (43-49) 9. The seat on the Synod for the Chaplain General of Prisons should be retained. (50-51) 10. There should be a constituency of seven for the armed forces: at least three to be clergy and at least three to be lay.

    Diocesan Prayer Cycle 1st October - 31st December What is a Diocese and how do we work together within it? At its simplest, a Diocese is a geographical area; a region; a collection of parishes, benefices, deaneries, archdeaconries. But it is more than that – it is a gathering of all our communities in mutual support for each other. And as the Diocese of Winchester, we each play our part in the growth of God’s Kingdom committed to our vision of ‘living the mission of Jesus’. This prayer diary helps us to get to know each other better, to find out what is happening across the area and to see how God is working and using us all in his mission across the region. The early church shared good news of what was happening across a wide area, as churches grew, and more people came to know Christ. In their commitment to love and care for one another, prayer lay at the heart of their lives. As we use this Prayer Diary, let’s seek to share that love and care for each other and to rejoice in what God is doing amongst us. This month... how might you pray for young people? For example, you might focus on school leavers, students, youth workers, community centres, young people in trouble... How might you be part of the answer to your prayers? For example, you might make a point of smiling at young people in the street; volunteer for a helpline; get involved with your local Further Education College; support parents you know whose young adult children are struggling..

    The Bishop in Europe: The Right Reverend Dr. Robert Innes The Suffragan Bishop in Europe: The Right Reverend David Hamid ARCHEACON OF GIBRALTAR AND ARCHDEACON OF ITALY AND MALTA Statement from the Bishops The Diocese in Europe is the 42nd Diocese of the Church of England. We are by far the biggest in terms of land area, as we range across over 42 countries in a territory approximately matching that covered by the Council of Europe, as well as Morocco. We currently attract unprecedented interest within the Church of England, as we are that part of the Church that specifically maintains links with continental Europe at a time of political uncertainty between the UK and the rest of Europe. Along with that, we have been in the fortunate position of being able to recruit some very high calibre lay and ordained staff. To help oversee our vast territory we have two bishops, the Diocesan Bishop Robert Innes who is based in Brussels, and the Suffragan Bishop David Hamid who is based in London. We have a diocesan office within Church House Westminster. We maintain strong connections with staff in the National Church Institutions. Importantly, and unlike English dioceses, our chaplaincies pay for their own clergy, and the diocese has relatively few support staff. Each appointment matters greatly to us. The diocesan strategy was formulated and approved over the course of 2015. We are emphasising our commitment to building up congregational life, our part in the re- evangelisation of the continent; our commitment to reconciliation at every level; and our particular role in serving the poor, the marginalised and the migrant.

Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a year, according to the following pattern: Eastern Archdeaconry - January, February Archdeaconry of France - March, April Archdeaconry of Gibraltar - May, June Diocesan Staff - July Italy & Malta Archdeaconry - July Archdeaconry of North West Europe - August, September Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe Nordic and Baltic Deanery - September, October Germany - November Swiss Archdeaconry - November, December Each Archdeaconry, with its Archdeacon, is remembered on a Sunday. On the other Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect all of us (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). Some chaplains might like to include prayers for the other chaplaincies in their deanery. We also include the Anglican Cycle of Prayer (daily, www.aco.org), the World Council of Churches prayer cycle (weekly, www.oikoumene.org, prayer resources on site), the Porvoo Cycle (weekly, www.porvoochurches.org), and festivals and commemorations from the Common Worship Lectionary (www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts.aspx). Re-founded in 1918 but with a history dating back to 658, the diocese has an overall population of approximately 820,000 and covers an area of just under 700 square miles, covering Coventry, most of Warwickshire and a small part of Solihull. The diocese is sub-divided into 11 areas called deaneries and, overall, includes 199 parishes. Some parishes have more than one church - the diocese has 238 churches open for public worship. The diocese has one Cathedral – The Cathedral Church of St Michael, Coventry. Each diocese is led by a Diocesan Bishop. The Right Reverend Doctor Christopher Cocksworth became Bishop of Coventry in 2008. Shortly after his installation he re-affirmed the diocesan mission as one of worshipping God, making new disciples and transforming communities. The diocesan strategy to achieve this is by focussing on eight essential qualities of healthy growing churches: empowering leadership; gift-orientated ministry; passionate spirituality; inspiring worship; holistic small groups; need-orientated outreach; loving relationships; and functional structures.     The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished.
